Can anyone chime in on these? Comparisons, opinions?

Ive got the 16” rifle and it’s pretty neat. It has a suppressed setting that works well overbore like .30 or .36. It’s gassy af with a turbo K but that’s the only 556 baffle can i have. Totally fine with the Rex MG7k .358 can. Really pleasant with my OSS 556 can on the suppressed setting. Ive got the big brother of this in the form of a Sig 716 patrol (308 short stroke piston) that i run an OSS 762 can and it’s really pleasant also. Not sure if this helps but it’s what i got. Oh yeah, i grouped with next to my Geissele super duty and they’re really comparable in group size. My astigmatism is kinda bad so your mileage may vary. Cheers

No personal experience but one (maybe both, can’t recall which) of the engineers who designed the HK416 went on to improve the design for Sig in the Sig516. He/they took another step in improving the design with Caracal as the CAR816. Hence my separate comment of HK416 3.0.

While I don't know the full story of the Caracal...
The SIG is a direct clone of the LWRC, and isn't really related to the HK416. It is such a close copy a court ruling made it so that for every SIG 516 sold, LWRC gets a cut of the profit. That is why SIG generally doesn't sell them on the civilian market anymore.
So while there was a guy who worked on the HK416 and then worked on the SIG 516, it isn't really clear what he offered to the SIG 516 program. It wasn't the OTB drain locations, because while they are the same on the HK416 and Caracal, they aren't present on the SIG. It wasn't the piston set up, because SIG uses the same location as LWRC, which is prone to carrier tilt when used full auto. Overall there isn't much of the HK in the SIG offering, which makes me curious about the Caracal, though, because I have never handled one, I don't know which one it is more similar to.

I vaguely remember something about this, so to refresh, I looked it up. Are you referring to this lawsuit in which LW formerly of LWRC sued LWRC for breach of contract to pay him royalties for using his self-cleaning pistol design and also sues Sig Sauer for using his design without paying royalties?
"Over a dozen other rifle designs were named in the suit as using the patent, some of the more notable ones being the Sig MCX, the Sig 516 and the Sig 716."
Link to the full filing at the bottom of above linked article.

No, the 2011 lawsuits, not the 2016 one involving Leitner-Wise.
Ordinary-Machine1451@reddit
ok, thanks. I'll have to dig deeper when able.
ChillBlintone@reddit
You seem to be wrong about almost everything, lwrc settled but nobody knows what the settlement is the main disputes were about the carrier which is made in about the best way to reduce carrier tilt. Hk416 designer Robert hirts work on the sig 516 is easy to see and 1 minute on Google would have shown you they made it less proprietary, worked on the gas system and the carrier.

That's what I heard as well.

They work great! I have been selling PWS for years, and had a couple friends there highly recommend Caracal after they went on a tour of their manufacturing facility.
NewbRedditer@reddit
Pws employees recommended you start selling carrying these?

Can't really specify on their exact relationship without permission, but 100% trust their opinion!

For anyone that was contemplating spending 2 grand on an hk 416/556… know that this is essentially the exact same upper with improvements, literally designed by the exact same person, for less than half the price.
It’s still an out of date design though… if you had been in the market 5 years ago you couldve gotten one for $300 when sig was retiring the 516 and had blowout pricing on remaining inventory.

Hmmmm, BIN for the LMT?🤔🤔🤔

Yep. Gotta move that to help pay some invoices.

I love my Caracal upper. I took it and my new BCM upper on their first range trip a few weeks ago and it was shooting circles around the BCM, which had a few failures to feed and wasn't nearly as accurate. Same lower, same ammo, same magazines. Let down by BCM but extra impressed with Caracal.

Nice! I tried a 11.5 inch the other day, it worked great for me...

Small arms solutions has a video or two on these. They seem legit.
