This is a really good price, but man a $1000 22 bolt gun is a tough ask
Stinkycheezmonky@reddit
457 MTR in a chassis, price seems about right to me? They're like $7-800 in a plain stock.
killbill770@reddit
I mean, yes if we’re strictly speaking price, but I get what he means.
I’ve been looking into trying out a new 22 rimfire setup lately as well, but it I’m not quite there yet understanding how much accuracy you can get from that cartridge where it’s worth the money.
I.e. for (many) centerfire cartridges, it seems to follow the 80/20 rule for money spent vs. the accuracy payoff. But for .22lr, can you really get that much more accuracy from a precision bolt gun over something like a 10/22?
And don’t get me wrong… the reason I’m here at all is l LOVE a nice bolt action, and I completely understand the quality materials for quality’s sake thing if that’s mostly what it is (although I’d go walnut myself in that case 😅).
Genuine question, haven’t dug that deep yet.
awcmon123@reddit
My NRL22 guns all group sub-moa 10 shot groups with proper ammo (SK Rifle Match, etc). Off the rack 10/22s probably aren't. People only think rimfire is inaccurate since no good rimfire match ammo is made in the US. If rimfire were truly inherently inaccurate, stuff like rimfire benchrest wouldn't be a thing.
caterham09@reddit
I think the problem with rimfire in general is that these nice setups, with good match quality ammo is only marginally cheaper than a good centerfire setup.
The big advantage of 22 has always been cost. When we're talking about paying $17 for a 50 round box of 22lr and buying $2000-$3000 setups to shoot with, it just loses so much appeal.
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
My Tikka T1x that I got in 2022 was around $600. I will get some 5 round sub-MOA groups with some boxes of Norma Tac-22 and even Federal Automatch that sell for 6 to 7 CPR. The groups are more likely to be about 1.2 inches to 1.5 inches at 100 yards but I do get so smaller groups and even most of the larger groups are under 2 inches.
I had three 50-round boxes of Federal Champion that I bought at Walmart back in early 2022 when they have little ammo in stock. I got 1 inch or smaller groups with that ammo consistently at 100 yards. Any of the newer was more like 2 inches at 100 yards. So one can get lucky with cheap bulk ammo.
A friend with a three different 22LR rifles has good luck with cheap 5 CPR Armscor with his Ruger Precision Rimfire rifle at 50 yards. His CZ 457 MTR does not like that same ammo. My Tika T1x does not like that ammo. I used some CCI SV ammo when competing with him with cheap ammo at 50 yards. His RPR did not care for CCI SV.
He has a Ruger 10/22 Carbon Fiber. Even with SK Standard Plus it still has groups that are more like 1 inch in size at 50 yards while I can get that at 100 yards with the same ammo in my T1x. I don't think his 10/22 or my range toy Rossi RS22 or Winchester Wildcat come close to his Ruger Precision Rimfire, his CZ457 MTR, or my Tikka T1x when it comes to shooting either better ammo or even bulk ammo. His 10/22 had noticeably larger groups with every ammo we tested than out other rifles we had.
The first few trips to the range my friend was disappointed that none of the cheap bulk ammo grouped as well in his more expensive CZ 457 MTR. His less expensive RPR grouped better. He texted me later that he bought some other bulk ammo that his MTR does like.
So one can find some cheap bulk ammo that groups well enough to enjoy shooting for precision. When I open a box of Federal Automatch that my T1x does not like I set it aside to use with my Taurus TX22 pistol of one of my range toy 22LR pistols. One can have fun shooting a lot of 22LR ammo at the range with a $500 to $650 rifle and 7 CPR ammo. I really don't care to shoot my range toy 22LR rifles anymore. They are more for when I take a few guests to the range. I really don't care to shoot them beyond 50 yards. I should take them to the range to see how they perform compared to my friend's 10/22. I'll keep my mouth shut if my range toys out perform his 10/22 Carbon Fiber. I doubt his 10/22 is that bad though.

I forget how serious Rimfire is, then I go to an Appleseed or chance upon a competition. How did you get more serious into Rimfire?
I am into mediocre 8-1000 yard 308 shooting at 48" targets and taking deer under 250.
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
I am not serious into rimfire. I just enjoy shooting my bolt action Tikka especially with others.
I have not gone to an Appleseed event yet. I can't shoot beyond 500 yards at my club and have only shot on that range a few times. I'd like to shoot there more with my 5.56 and 6.5CM bolt action rifles. The club has baffles so I may n
chuckisduck@reddit
where I live, the ranges are all shorter and I let my membership laspe, so my trips are either to the gravel pits when friends want to shoot (basically mag dump on trash) , do continental with friends or out to hike to a spot where there is a 850 yard target across a small alcove in the Cascades, have not participated in a 3 gun for about 6 years now... same issues, kids, family and House& other projects..just never enough time as you know. at least that project list is usually decreasing in size.
killbill770@reddit
Great info! Really appreciate all that.
Just out of curiously, is the 10/22 a takedown model? I was interested in those before I saw the ones with the new, fancy folding stocks lol. The takedown is cool and I’m sure they’ve improved the lockup/zero return, but they’ll never get me to believe it’s just as good as the standard receivers.
From about 8-16+ years old I competed with an ancient Anschutz target rifle at my 4H club, but that thing always felt like overkill at our 25 and 50-yard target distances, as I mentioned to another guy. Those peep sights were mint, though.
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
My friend bought the following 10/22:
https://ruger.com/products/1022CarbonFiber/specSheets/31220.html
It a light weight 10/22 with BX trigger. I like the look and feel of it. It feels better than my Winchester Wildcat or Rossi RS22. It is not a takedown model. I like how easily the mag release works but I need to use it more to get competent with it. My friend likes how light weight it is and said he plans to use it for hunting.
I considered buying a base model 10/22 with either wood or synthetic stock before buying the Winchester Wildcat. I knew that I would just want to spend more money replacing with stock with a Magpul stock or some more expensive stock. I did not want to go where others have gone and end up spending $1000 or more on a 10/22 after one upgrade after another. I think that is fine for those that want to do that. I already did that on a \~$380 AR15 that when I bought it for the low price I told myself I would not put a lot of upgrades on it but eventually replaced one part after another.
I was interested in 17HMR after learning it was flatter shooting than 22LR but once I saw how much it cost I lost interest. I might still be interested in it if I lived a large farm or range and used it for small varmints at longer distances. At the cost of the ammo I am not interested to putting a lot rounds a paper or steel.
awcmon123@reddit
It is considerably cheaper if you're competing and practicing a lot. I got my SK Rifle Match for like 20 CPR while factory 6.5 is like 150-220 CPR last I checked, which was a while ago since I started reloading. But reloading is very time consuming and it's still like 80+ CPR for 6.5 (140gr ELD-M, H4350). This doesn't even account for the cost of barrel replacements!
I don't think this is comparable to an off the rack 10/22 lol. They serve different purposes. I would not buy this for plinking, and I wouldn't use an off the rack 10/22 for precision shooting (I do use a Kidd 10/22 for NRL22 nowadays though).
People shoot precision rimfire because they don't have easy access to a 1000+ yd range, or to practice in between centerfire matches, or because ammo is cheaper in the long run, or they don't want to reload, or because they specifically like shooting precision rimfire. The delta between a precision centerfire setup is irrelevant in this case. My Kidd 10/22 costs more than my Tikka T3x at this point because I shoot it so much more often.
As an aside, I actually wouldn't buy this particular CZ457 personally, the chassis looks kinda wack and if it doesn't have the match barrel then yeah fuck that.
killbill770@reddit
Yeah maybe it’s the ammo thing for me—I really don’t see match-grade .22lr on the shelf, and that colors my bias.
TBH, I used to compete myself all through grade/high school and did really well! Our club had fancy but VERY old Anschutz target rifles. IIRC though, we only ever did 25-50 yd targets, and often indoors.
I guess in my head (which is probably incorrect, I realize) I assumed the rifle doesn’t matter beyond that range when your projectile starts losing stability not too much farther out.
Idk. I’m going to blame some old boomer wisdom I probably picked up from an instructor in my youth, and buried too deep to know where it originated 🤣
Stinkycheezmonky@reddit
I'm probably not the best to answer your question, but I can say with certainty that I am way more accurate and precise with a stock Tikka T1X or CZ 457 than I am with a stock or mostly-stock 10/22 with the same ammo. I would put them both on par with a really nicely built 10/22 with a shitload of Kidd bits (barrel, trigger, receiver, etc.). A better shooter might have different results though.
Now a stock/stockish 10/22 might be accurate ENOUGH for you, but that's really a separate question/conversation, especially in regards to price.
killbill770@reddit
Ah you know what, that’s fair… it always comes back to intended use, even with .308/6.5, and I wasn’t doing the same in my head with 22lr.
“Good enough” for varmint hunting can be easy 50-yard shots because (usually) the types of critters you’re after let you get in pretty close. Even though they’re small, they’re not that hard to hit.
I used to compete with 22 myself at 50 yards with target rifles, which always felt too easy… so that’s probably coloring my judgement too. You’ve still got stability well past that, so it makes sense to reach with it just like you would anything else!
Damn… I might have to get one. At this point half my safe is CZ lmao
accounts_baleeted@reddit
I'm in the same boat... I love a cheap bolt action that I can hand load for, and squeeze out sub moa performance from, but not being able to load my own 22lr makes me hesitant.
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
If you can let go of consistent sub-MOA groups that you can get with handloaded centerfire rifle calibers you may enjoy rimfire.
I am happy enough when I can get some 5 round sub MOA groups with cheap ammo with others being as large at 1.5 MOA. If I shoot a 10 or 20 round group and have just a few fliers with the remainder being close to 1 MOA I am very happy.
I generally don't wish to shoot ammo that provides 2 MOA or worse performance at 100 yards. But I think I discovered that some ammo that is not fun me me to shoot at 100 yards did provide okay results at 50 yards.
My friend and I had no problems sharing each others bulk ammo to try out as much as we wanted because it is so inexpensive. I did give him limited number of SK Standard Plus rounds but would have given him more if he asked. One day each of us likely shot 300 to 500 rounds. We were at the outdoor 100 yard file range from about 4 PM until sunset that day and then shot some 22LR pistol and a little 9mm at the indoor range.
I don't have that much time to shoot all the time but it was fun trying out his 22LR rifles and comparing them against mine with various ammo at different distances.
Most of the rounds my friend shot was 5 CPR Armscor but he did have CCI AR Tactical that cost more than 12 CPR. We found our rifles liked it better than CCI SV. I shot mostly CCI SV and Federal Automatch with a little Norma Tac-22, SK Std Plus, and a few others cheap bulk rounds. It would have been very costly to shoot that much 5.56 ammo even if it was hand loaded.
I do enjoy shooting 5.56 in my AR15 rifle and my CZ 600 bolt action. Even though 5.56 has much less felt recoil than other calibers I don't think I would care to shoot 300 rounds of it in my bolt action in a single range trip. I also enjoy how quiet 22LR is out a bolt action rifle.
_WhiteGoodman_@reddit
Really not bad considering you can throw a good optic and a bipod on this and go straight into NRL/PRS. Albeit you’ll be in the open classes going against full chassis builds but this in the right hands it can do decently well.
Junction91NW@reddit
You’ll be out classed all day. No match chamber.
_WhiteGoodman_@reddit
Bro first match I ever did there were about 40-45 shooters. I was shooting in open class against voodoo’s and rimx’s and placed 15th lol. First time out, never shot a match before in my life.
Your statement is false lol.
offexit10@reddit (OP)
There are some nice discounts on add on items (bases, mags, etc) when purchasing a package. A nice way to get setup like you say!
Radiant_Eagle7634@reddit
FWIW, these blems list a standard chamber instead of a match chamber.
hitemlow@reddit
Yeah, it would be great if they'd list the SKU this belongs to so we could compare it to CZ-USA's info. Though the "same" models listed on the CZ.ub (CZ Europe) website have different specs from the ones on CZ-USA. Why they can't standardize the models and sell all of them in the US, no one knows.
Radiant_Eagle7634@reddit
Yeah, it's frustrating. I just saw this listing stated "standard chamber".
Searching the UPC on the blem and the non-blem page from Modern Warrior doesn't bring up any other deals - is it perhaps a Modern Warriors exclusive?
hitemlow@reddit
Dumping it into Google yields a single result. And that's normal, I guess since it's a blem, but we should still get to know the 'real' SKU for comparison's sake.
Radiant_Eagle7634@reddit
I usually get some other store to pop up with a given UPC, but search engines and gun deal aggregate websites only pointed both the blem and non-blem back to Modern Warriors. Not even CZ's own website.
The 02334-BLEM SKU for this listing wasn't pulling anything else up for me in those same search spots. Once you add "CZ-" to the start, it pulls up some very similar listing (wrong color) at KY Gun Co.
skygao@reddit
This is the comment I was looking for since the last blem deal also was no MTR chamber. Feels like that’s the real blem.
librarian45@reddit
Indeed. Lack of Match chamber makes these pretty whack
FranklinNitty@reddit
I've probably got three times this amount in my 457 after purchasing an aftermarket chassis, barrel, bipod, and optic. It adds up quick.
CONDITION_ZER0@reddit
rimfire competition folks out here paying $1k+ on just the glass 😅
Sasselhoff@reddit
My CZ 457 is sitting around $1900 at the moment (I think)...the only stock remaining parts are the action and part of the bolt. Meaning all those other parts are trash, basically (no one is going to buy a stock pro-varmint barrel from me or a pro-varmint stock).
So if you could skip most of that BS and start with the right parts (and if the stock is decent, I am not sure about that chassis), this is a good deal.
Jason1435@reddit
$1000 BLEM 22 is insane
Ragnarok112277@reddit

Old_MI_Runner@reddit
Black blem that was posted 20 days ago for $893 is still in stock.

Sudden_Construction6@reddit
Why does it feel like $1k is a lot for a 22lr.... but $600 for the rifle and a $400 chassis seems okay lol
That's that $19.99 math 😅
Ok-Chemistry-8206@reddit
It's alot of money to ask if you haven't shot 22lr at range before i have more fun shooting my 22lr out at 300yards than I do shooting bigger calibers at a mile and its basically free to shoot compared to bigger calibers
Sudden_Construction6@reddit
I agree man. I have a Tikka T1X and I've shot it out to 300+ yds and even with that tack driver it is not an easy task! It's being able to experience that 1,000+ yd challenge with a shorter range and cheaper ammo!
LuM0s-Wolf762@reddit
28 blems ?
offexit10@reddit (OP)
I guess!? Also looks like they have over 100 non-blems for $200 more in both green or grey chassis.
