Did you see the movie when it premiered?

I was 15 and went with a group of friends. We just started smoking pot and we couldn't stop laughing. Far out, man.

Saw it in the theater on opening weekend. Then bought it as soon as it was released on DVD.
DarioJames@reddit
Nope. Did not watch it for many years because of who wrote and directed the film. Hated Raising Arizona, Fargo and all things Koen in the 1990’s.
fishbone_buba@reddit
Have you gone back to those movies to give them a second chance?
DarioJames@reddit
Still not a fan of Fargo and the Ilk. Brother where art thou was ok.
fishbone_buba@reddit
Interesting. Did you find them too absurd? And have you tried Blood Simple, which has a different style?
DarioJames@reddit
That one was not in the bundle I bought. Hail Cesar was. No thanks again. Absurd is fine. Guess I like comfort and gentleness in my stories. I have enough Anxiety in real life to watch two hours of existential dread. ;-)

I actually walked out of it. I was a college freshman at the time, it was playing at the campus theater. I had a huge exam the next day that I wasn’t at all prepared for and I wasn’t paying attention to the movie at all, I think I left around the Walter/Smokey confrontation.
Of course it’s my favorite movie of all time now

Were you even listening to the dude's story?
Pseudonymble@reddit
This was a cherished memory, no? ...And these guys peed on it!!
the_kid1234@reddit
I saw it the week before it came out on VHS.

H_E_Pennypacker@reddit
Tell you the truth Brandt I don’t remember most of it
Rand_Casimiro@reddit
I wasn’t at the premiere, but I definitely saw it during the original theatrical run.
Potatoe_Potahto@reddit
This arthouse cinema in the city where I grew up screened it every day for about a year straight. My high school English teacher was an old hippy and he urged us all to go see it. Thanks, Mr Morris! You were a real one.
Pleasant_Expert_1990@reddit
Yup, me and my buddy Chris, high school seniors.
Pretend-Function-133@reddit
On my 16th birthday!
CowPrestigious8447@reddit
I could have but missed my chance even though I was 15.
Comfortable-Delay-95@reddit
Saw it in pacific grove California with 3 friends when I was 20. We all left feeling like we’d just seen something significant but unable to express why. I then bought the vhs and watched it until the tape broke. I eventually went through two VHS tapes and two dvds. Each rewatching reveals even more of the film’s beauty and genius. I think it’s the best thing to ever touch a screen.
fishbone_buba@reddit
Yep. Went on a date with soon-to-be girlfriend who eventually became a crazy ex-girlfriend.
AlmostNeverPosts@reddit
Yep, I was a junior in highschool and watched it at my local Edwards Theater with my buddy. It blew my mind, far fucking out!
fishbone_buba@reddit
Failing Social Studies…
vonnostrum2022@reddit
Saw it at a theater matinee with a friend and probably 20 other people. We were both laughing but not a lot of others were.
Jayman44Spc@reddit
I didn’t see it in theaters but me and my roommate were huge bowlers at the time and watched it when it came out on home video
Useless_Knowledge420@reddit
I did and wasn’t impressed…a few years later I rented it and well, that’s like my opinion man.
First_Strain7065@reddit
Yes I saw twice during its initial release.
BartStarrPaperboy@reddit
Yep. Opening weekend
GringodelNorte@reddit
I hadn't even used a curse word when this came out
crashusmaximus@reddit
I did. Went to see it with my girlfriend at the time. She liked the bit with Saddam Hussein in the bowling alley but otherwise just thought it was very silly and odd.
whererusteve@reddit (OP)
She was out of her element.
MaryAnnZhlotnik@reddit
Yep, saw it opening night!
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit
I was 22, but I missed it in the theater. I did catch it about six months later on VHS, and didn't really know what to think. All I knew is that I had just seen something epic.
chimpomatic5000@reddit
I played it at the theatre I managed. Some movies you just know it's going to be good. We just knew. Apparently it didn't have a big run in the USA, and became more of a cult hit later on. Where I am in Canada it was a boomer right out of the barn. It ran for a couple months and did some big numbers. And yeah, I watched the print late, the night before it opened to "check the print". And several times after that too.
But sometimes, there's a movie. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here. Sometimes, there's a movie, well, it's the movie for it's time and place.

¡Que ridiculo!
Eric848448@reddit
I saw it in the theater when I was 15 with a group of high school friends.
We knew the theater that didn’t care about age for R-rated movies.
Sea-Inspection-8184@reddit
senior in college. Skipped class and saw it twice the day it opened. I loved Fargo and Raising Arizona, so I figured it was probably going to be good.
whererusteve@reddit (OP)
That was just like, your opinion, man.
ArtAccurate9552@reddit
Well we just don’t know dude.
