When my captain is on the crapper and I'm up there in the flight deck, am I PIC?
Posted by iamgravity@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 143 comments
I mean, I alone am in control of the aircraft and am ensuring the safety of the flight in that moment, so should I be logging 2 minutes of PIC every time he has to drop the kids off at the pool? And, if yes, what is stopping me from putting ex lax in his coffee every morning to accrue roughly 30 minutes of PIC time each and every day, if not leg?
punsnguns@reddit
Ironically, in that situation, if shit goes down, you are responsible and not the captain.
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
Fo/sic is only responsible if the captain is incapacitated.
Euryheli@reddit
I feel sad that you have never taken a shit large enough to incapacitate you. It’s glorious. You should eat more fiber.
bamfcoco1@reddit
Imma be real…if I’m mid log, I’m pretty incapacitated and at my most vulnerable.
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
Yet even mid log, you get to do the carpet dance when the smoke clears.
Apprehensive_Cost937@reddit
Both crew members are responsible, captain is just the first person to go to jail, if things go that far, but FO will be close behind them.
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
Sure, but he is not PIC unless the poop king is incapacitated
jdmillar86@reddit
I'm fairly sure that in that particular scenario the captain is responsible for making sure the shit goes down.
N878AC@reddit
Wow, what airline do you fly for?
iamgravity@reddit (OP)
What possible reason on earth would I reveal what Airline I work for on the internet? Anyone who works with Delta would never reveal on the internet that they work for Delta. Ever.
mattyyicee34@reddit
Is this r/shittyaskflying ?
slay1224@reddit
Be quiet, I got a 90 day band from there and am going through shitpost withdrawals. I need this bro
f1racer328@reddit
How do you get banned from a shit posting sub? They have like 2 rules.
slay1224@reddit
It basically comes down to the fact that I’m a better pylote than the mods.
But also my post about FA’s putting pubes in my crew meals because I went on Facebook and shit talked them was deleted. Apparently thats not flying related, but the lost redditor post about how to smoke a pork butt is, so it’s still up. I thought this was surely a mistake because quality crew meals are a safety of flight risk, so I reposted it. Boom automatic 90 day ban.
Puzzleheaded_Sea5976@reddit
Oh, pylote, we were wondering why things were suddenly much tamer. I am, however, smart enough not to ask why among the genteel people of this forum.

Jaded_Maintenance964@reddit
Well, no. Cappy is still PIC.
ERJ190@reddit
No. You’re not.
autonym@reddit
Pretty much the same thing that's stopping you from putting cyanide in his coffee so you can log PIC time for the entire remainder of the flight.
iamgravity@reddit (OP)
Hey, thanks for the idea!
SoldFashioned@reddit
New meaning to Captains Log
mkosmo@reddit
Old meaning of poop deck.
Romeo9594@reddit
No, it was just the English adopting a French word for stern
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poop_deck
mkosmo@reddit
It was a joke, bud.
Romeo9594@reddit
It always was a very unclear joke, as it's a super common myth tons of people actually believe
mkosmo@reddit
Nautical to aviation terminology and heritage and a bathroom joke.
It’s not hard to follow. You’re the only one who had to stop and “um, achtkually” the joke.
Romeo9594@reddit
Again, not exactly a clear joke where it's something a good chunk of the population heard in 4th grade and has taken it as truth ever since
TeaAndTalks@reddit
Ok Sheldon.
FL060@reddit
Does anyone have the green text of the Dash captain's Ops report about having to shit on the taxi out? Stopped at the maintenance hangar for "paperwork" or something. It's a hilarious read.

fuck it, just take the left seat while ur at it

teejwi@reddit
Yes but the CA also logs PIC - Pilot In Crapper.
Mavtroll1@reddit
You stink of desperation. No you’re not the pic unless the caption is incapacitated.
iamgravity@reddit (OP)
All I have to say.
Mavtroll1@reddit
Good old autocorrect, but to be fair I’m not the one desperately trying to log 2 minutes a day of pic because the captain stepped out… do you relive the time from your logbook while you’re in the crapper? Nah didn’t think so.
iamgravity@reddit (OP)
I am absolutely baffled that you cannot see that this is 100% a shitpost, but then again you are a pilot, and the vast majority of pilots I know are lizard people pretending to be humans and failing. I am so sorry for you.
jaxin737@reddit
“100% a shitpost” The double entendre is <>
RJH311@reddit
Are you qualified as PIC?
TempusFugit2020@reddit
No.
Which_Material_3100@reddit
You didn’t for the plane. So, no, dog!
notaballitsjustblue@reddit
If I die then my FO is PIC but didn’t sign.
The real question here is if having a poo means one is incapacitated. It’s at least arguable.
Which_Material_3100@reddit
Very true!
StoutFlier@reddit
It depends; did he he wear his hat to the Lav, or are you wearing it in cockpit while he’s taking a growler?

Facelessroids@reddit
Who is taking a shit on the aircraft??
-Copenhagen@reddit
People flying longhaul.
Apuonbus@reddit
I love it. Very creative.. It's just like logging p1 if your captain is incapacitated, however, even though he is on the toilet he is still in charge of the flight. So academically you're correct, practically in the real world you can't log it.
ComplianceGuys@reddit
For two minutes can you legally marry people ?
AFBUFFPilot@reddit
LoL ok I’ve been entertained by the answers here’s but on a serious note, “it depends”. Without details of what you’re flying or with what company, I can’t tell. Technically you are “sole manipulator” and can log PIC time BUT, it’s likely if you fly for a 135 or 121, the Ops Spec says you can only log SIC time ….but it could also depend on whether the equipment your flying is a “single pilot” aircraft or not. So like I said, it depends”
Newcities@reddit
Yeah dude, log it.
earthgreen10@reddit
is there a bathroom in the plane? i dont get it. why are you flying if he is in the bathroom on ground?
OnToNextStage@reddit
Captain’s log? No
Captain’s dropping a log
John_EightThirtyTwo@reddit
TAKING THE BROWNS TO THE SUPER BOWL!
UnhingedCorgi@reddit
Sure why not. Log each minute as .1 and have the captain use the lav every 7 minutes. The FA will hate you but doesn’t matter, you’ll be off to a legacy quickly.
SRM_Thornfoot@reddit
You could say you are both 'logging' it.
57thStilgar@reddit
Isn't .1 = 6 minutes?
mkosmo@reddit
Round up each time.
onetwentyeight@reddit
Look between the paperwork and possible go-arounds 6 minutes is a fairly quick turn-around.
belinck@reddit
The FA AND the cabin cleaners....
Apprehensive_Cost937@reddit
Not the one in the cockpit with them, surely they can then log SIC as well :D
RecentAmbition3081@reddit
Really? You really need to ask this? What airline, so I never get on it.
iamgravity@reddit (OP)
Um, Delta. Yeah don't fly for delta ever please. thanks.

O5_13_Epsilon@reddit
Yes, you become PIC when you are the only one in the cockpit, even its for 10-15 minutes.
BabiesatemydingoNSW@reddit
Who takes only 2 min to pinch one off??
imapilotaz@reddit
My dude, unless Montezuma's revenge strikes, i should never shit for more than 2 mins start to washing hands.
A few pushes, comes out in one long log, wipe, flush and go wash.
My adult sons are never faster than10 mins. Jesus guys. Pinch it off and finish up.
I assume i got blessed by great bowels that compact my shit and clears it all out together quickly.
Romeo9594@reddit
Some of us have IBS, even with a healthy dose of fiber with my medication every day I might not even be properly started after 2 minutes
BabiesatemydingoNSW@reddit
I guess it's just my alone time then(?)
imapilotaz@reddit
My ass falls asleep if im on it for more than 5 mins.
MikeHuntessHarry69@reddit

BabiesatemydingoNSW@reddit

Metamucil bro
iamgravity@reddit (OP)
Unironically the most serious question asked in this thread.
agenuineasshole@reddit
No he’s still PIC, PILOT IN CRAPPER
Bon-Bon-Boo@reddit
In my country, in order to log PIC for that flight, you have to be the official Captain assigned by your operator. The one that signs the plane off in the techlog. Then should the FO log PIC time like that, and there happen do be an investigation about something, the FO would be guilty of fraud.
maethor1337@reddit
Me (like the best movies, Not Yet Rated) and a buddy (CPL no CFI) were flying cross country one day in a little Cessna in the late afternoon, putzing across the midwest below 5000ft. I’m pilot flying, we haven’t said a word in probably 20 minutes, and I look to my left. Dude is out. And rightfully so. I’m great at maintaining a heading and altitude, and nobody’s going to bother him for at least an hour.
If you squint just hard enough, OP, we were in the exact same situation!
While I apparently gained experience acting PIC that day, it didn’t make it into the logbook.
jbschwartz55@reddit
This isn’t Flight 370, is it?
propell0r@reddit
Sole manipulator my guy
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
Well, every other leg my fo flies he is the sole manipulator. Are we both logging PIC while I am playing solitaire for 8 hrs across the Atlantic? Bear in mind the flight release and aircraft logbook say fo/sic next to his name. Along with his flight schedule. We can't both be captain.
IFlyAirplanes@reddit
You’re not both Captain, but on his legs you can both be PIC.
It’s not time that airlines will count towards PIC but 61.57 says it is loggable PIC time, even if it’s for his own shits and giggles.
I kept a column in my electronic logbook labeled 61.57 bc in 91/135 land, to insurance/argus/wyvern/vendors etc. PIC is PIC. Every little bit helps. I kept it separate in case I ever decided to apply to a 121.
jim977654321@reddit
Yep this is right. If you’re fully qualified (type rated, no SIC type) you can LOG PIC time on your legs even though you’re the FO. But you can’t ACT as PIC for the flight since you haven’t completed your company training/line checks. You can Google the legal interpretation how airline FO’s can log PIC time for other currency requirements. However, like the previous poster mention, don’t use this interpretation to try make a logbook better for an airline job.
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
Yeah, it's not any kind of PIC that our company would accept from the rt or left seat, like on a crossing with a 3-man crew and the captain is sleeping. It's all sic in the computer also. I was only rt seat for 3 of my 18 yrs on the 76, and I didn't log any of it. Years ago, you didn't get a type on the dc9 as an fo, so sole manipulator or not it was all fo/sic because fo's were not typed.
sdgmusic96@reddit
Wrong sub man
dodexahedron@reddit
Sub?‽ Do we look like.. hang on a sec... *takes off the cap and shirt...and everything else* ...sailors to you, sir?
dodexahedron@reddit
No. He's the Pylote In Crapper. You said it yourself.
topsecret440@reddit
So should the OP then not log SIC when they are on the crapper?
iamgravity@reddit (OP)
That's my secret: I just do it right there in the right seat.
Alarmed-Oil3953@reddit
Technically the captain’s still PIC, but you are the one manipulating the controls. So yes, you’re flying—but no, you can’t start a laxative side hustle to pad your logbook...
DepressedFoool@reddit
Did you mean to post in /r/shittyaskflying?
Pyrausta@reddit
Bro if that was me my copilot would get to log an extra .5!
Sunsplitcloud@reddit
Technically you are PIC for every leg you are the pilot flying. But of course as FO you only ever log SIC
BigBadPanda@reddit
I teach my first officer; the first thing they need to do if I pass out is hack the clock, so they can log the PIC
stygarfield@reddit
Unwritten procedure is to also ACARS crew sched to make sure you start collecting both CA and FO pay
InternationalSort714@reddit
xD
hugothemango@reddit
Essentially, you are. Well, technically, captain is still pic assuming autopilot is on but if there are any things you have to do or change such as if you are on a collision course with another aircraft the second you maneuver the aircraft in whatever way and disengage autopilot you become PIC
TheCoffeeSweats@reddit
Uhhhh no. Hit the books and stop watching so much air disasters
Mike93747743@reddit
Depends. Corn or bubble gum might change things.
FerrickDerrick@reddit
O captain my captain

Nope. Still my plane, brah.
iamgravity@reddit (OP)

bc_this_is_America@reddit
You're better off just buying them donuts and hamburgers, then hoping their unhealthy ass drops dead, thereby freeing up an upgrade slot.
FinallyInKnoxville@reddit
The person who signed for the plane logs PIC. If you were a non-sim pilot, you would know this
iamgravity@reddit (OP)
Well I do have some sim time indeed!
girl_incognito@reddit
No.

👀: 😂 😂
ItalianFlyer@reddit
If he's the one making the logs, only he can log it.

when cap goes to the lav he is still the PIC (Pooper in Command)
DrRob@reddit
Log 2 minutes per log. Pretty sure that's in the regs
Boeinggoing737@reddit
Did you sign the release? Read your fom. It will be explained in the job roles and duties.
FlowerGeneral2576@reddit
Sure, still can’t log it though.
Living_Guess_2845@reddit
Captain's log, stardate...
EpicDude007@reddit
Not when you’re applying to the majors. You’re SIC PF. (Pilot flying). At other times you’re SIC PM. (Pilot monitoring).
busting_bravo@reddit
Welp, I'm not taking coffee from my FOs anymore.
UnexpectedFullStop@reddit

tailwheel307@reddit
Which country. There are a few minor differences in the definition of PIC and the interpretation of the regulator would be relevant.
rFlyingTower@reddit
This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:
I mean, I alone am in control of the aircraft and am ensuring the safety of the flight in that moment, so should I be logging 2 minutes of PIC every time he has to drop the kids off at the pool? And, if yes, what is stopping me from putting ex lax in his coffee every morning to accrue roughly 30 minutes of PIC time each and every day, if not leg?
