ULPT, Need to get a key for my apartment dryer
Posted by coleslawww1@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 42 comments
Not only does the dryer in my apartment take two rounds to fully dry clothes, something my landlord refuses to acknowledge or fix, but it also cost $2 in quarters, so i’m going through 16 quarters just to do a load of laundry. on top of that the coin slot frequently jams, and at that point i’m forced to call my landlord and wait for her to come out, unlock it and fix the jam before i can continue my laundry. Unfortunately the dryer is old as shit and i’m really not certain how to go about getting a key. It’s an Inglis Dryer and the coin slot on it says Vertical 8. I have some pictures of the mechanism but this sub doesn’t allow attachments. Does anyone know how i can get my hands on a key for it?

Pour the oil from a can of sardines into the dryer and run a cycle.
Then say a short prayer for that dryer, it’s a goner.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Why would make that dryer mas-...
oh. OH! gONer, not... ok.
UntestedMethod@reddit
Sardines arouse dryers. Basic scientist stuff.
onmy40@reddit
Pour a cup of piss in the dryer and run it. Then tell your landlord it smells funny and needs to be replaced
x_lincoln_x@reddit
Piss disk was right there!
UntestedMethod@reddit
Redundant when a dryer is involved.
NikoMata@reddit
That sounds both unethical and maybe likely to work. Bravo!
UntestedMethod@reddit
If you have any neighbours you particularly hate, you could attempt to frame them for it as an added bonus.
SaintsAngel13@reddit
Maybe let someone else report the stink first, chat with your neighbors about it and see if they can get the ball rolling. Then jump in and complain too. Maybe then she will do something about it

Deer urine, liquid ass,or buy some durian and throw it in and let it "cook" for a while.
Guaranteed to stink it up....
trikaren@reddit
If it is taking that long to dry clothes, the dryer vent could be full of lint and that is a fire hazard. Maybe mention that to the landlord.
HusqyFan@reddit
Mention it to the fire marshal.
UntestedMethod@reddit
"laundry room is now closed until further notice"
ProteinProblems@reddit
If the landlord is skimping on basic maintenance items like this, when the fire marshal comes they will find a laundry list (pun intended) of other violations.

Head on over to covert instruments dot com and watch a few lock picking lawyer videos

It’s a free country, go to a laundromat
Rick-l-Sanchez@reddit
Are YOU the landlord?
thiccglossytaco@reddit
Actually, it appears to cost $2
going-for-gusto@reddit
Yes $2 at the apartment complex and OP is free to go to another laundromat and hopefully have a better experience!
Effective-Result7959@reddit
Why the downvotes ? If everyone that currently uses the machine stop using it whoever earns money with it will fix it to keep the income in coming .
going-for-gusto@reddit
Maybe because it is an ethical solution.
Effective-Result7959@reddit
And a capitalist solution 😅
PuzzleheadedTea4221@reddit
Not really unethical. But the way I wound up solving my laundry issue was I bought a mini washing machine that I was able to put in my bathtub when I used it. And then I bought a drying rack. Because every time I drop my laundry off to have it done they would mess it up some way. And I started using a bunch of those compression socks and shirts and other things and is expensive as they were it was cheaper for me to just do it myself without worry about them ruining something.
hard-of-haring@reddit
My washer is 1.3cu ft that I bought from the marketplace for $75. For anything large, like blankets, I go to the Laundry mat.
toplessflamingo@reddit
throw in a dry bath towel in with your dryer load. It will absorb enough moisture so that you dont have to run the dryer twice. If that doesnt help the dryer vent is clogged and really does need to be cleaned out because its a fire hazard.
AmazingJames@reddit
Take your laundry somewhere else. If you have to pay anyway, you have options
MortLightstone@reddit
16 quarters isn't too bad. Mine costs 4$
testsubject793@reddit
Maybe make a hole in a quarter and tie a string to it?
SaintsAngel13@reddit
This reminds me of when people were using the back of their keys to unlock the Aldi shopping carts and then taking it back out. I know that won't work, but I bet their are youtube videos on how to cheat a quarter slot
Wulf2k@reddit
Save $4 and hang em to dry.
Wait, ULPT....
Uh, break into your neighbour's place, lick every pickle in their fridge, then carve 16 fake quarters out of various objects there.
Bk_Punisher@reddit
Found the pickle licker🤣😂
MacintoshEddie@reddit
Pickle quarters!
S_A_R_K@reddit
Put a piss disc in the dryer
Effective-Result7959@reddit
Always a go to solution for any problem
Twice_Knightley@reddit
Once you find the key that works - don't steal the extra quarters, that'll just result in a lock change. Instead, just take back your own and then add in a bonus $2 for the next person.
wisepunk21@reddit
I just bought a round key lockpick off Amazon.
Existing_Many9133@reddit
You can find keys on Amazon
nitromen23@reddit
Landlord needs to spend $45 to have someone clean the dryer vent and all your problems will be solved. Unfortunately if they don’t you’re kinda screwed but you can order key sets off Amazon that have a bunch of keys and one might work. Otherwise learn to pick locks
ProteinProblems@reddit
What you need is a control panel key for an Inglis dryer. You will need the model name & number to get the correct key. If you can’t find the right key online go to a local appliance repair shop and tell them you bought an Inglis model [insert model name] second hand and need to get the key so you can work on the control panel. These people will not care enough to investigate your true motive.
The control panel key will allow you to open up the control panel and start a load which will just bypass the payment method. Your other option is to get a key for the change drawer. Same deal, you will need the name and model number of the coin receptacle. These keys can be more difficult because some are unique and not a standardized key. If you can get the right key for it you can just take the change out and use it for your own load every time.
Be certain there are no cameras monitoring the laundry room because this is considered theft and the landlord can terminate your lease over this. It’s not worth saving a few dollars to get your living situation turned upside down. But if there are no cameras you are free to inspect the control panel for the load cycle starter.
Some other comment threads on this sub say you can stick a firm steel or copper wire in 3-4 inches on some small hole near the control panel to trigger a load to start as an override but I am not familiar with that strategy. Maybe someone can shed more light on it below.

Search this sub for ‘Laundry Key’ and you will see hundreds of posts in the past month answering the same question.
