Which one did you identify with?

Watched one of my all time favorites last night. The movie holds up just as good as it did 40 years ago. Though, is even more sad now knowing the fate of half of them.
Even though it’s set in the 50’s to me it still feels like it could have been set in the 80s. Did any of you identify with the characters? Which one? Why? I think I could identify with each one of them at different stages in my adolescence.

I started identifying with Jerry O’Connell round about the time the future Mrs. Jerry O’Connell was modeling for VS

Chris. Once I was uninvited to a sleepover because I was "not a good girl". Chris and I would have gotten along aces.

Identified with Gordie; wanted to be Chris but in reality was Teddy.

I guess if I had to pick, Gordy. I was creative and sensitive when I was younger.
Now that we have that out of the way, Mickey's a mouse, Donald's a duck, Pluto's a dog. What's Goofy?

A monster.

Ace Merrill!
But seriously I feel like more of a Gordie, just without any talent for writing.

The one that also played in Ollie Hopoodle's Haven of Bliss

Same. Vern was actually alright though, despite the other kids picking on him.
KitchenNazi@reddit
He turned out OK.
No need to post a pic. I’m just going to assume you had a similar transformation into a ~~handsome~~ beautiful gal.

That's not the secret knock!

I think I was a little of all 4 of them.

Chris. Similar childhood. I was even blamed for a stolen watch in 3rd grade, but was innocent. I was always kind of the leader of my group and even have a habit of getting involved when there trouble and trying calm people down- Thankfully, I never got stabbed.

I just recently read the novella and absolutely loved it. I had no knowledge of this movie until then. I must have missed it in the 90s because of the cheesy title. I need to watch it now.

Wesley Crusher, I mean Gordie.
BlacksmithThink9494@reddit
Great movie. Probably vern but all of them.
EdwardDorito@reddit
Chris for attitude and cool dysfunction and Vern because I was a "husky boy". Thanks, mom 🤭

All 4, which is why I think it was so well written. One of those movies that a lot of people could identify to some degree with all of the characters.

Chubby kid with an abusive father, so Vern and Teddy
dunnkw@reddit
Vern, 100%.
Chronic-Bronchitis@reddit
I've cycled through all 4 through my childhood and teens.

Gordie. Into stories, imagination, seemed a little introverted and thoughtful as opposed to rowdy. I also hung out with little girls and not little boys but I liked this better than that girlie version with Christina Ricci or whoever. Also I had a crush on Wil Wheaton.

This movie was so inspirational to my life and my way of thinking.

Gordie, when I was little. And then Chris, when I hit my early teens.

1/2 Gordie, and also 1/2 Chris. Def experienced the “teacher lying on a kid”

Yes.
coffee_and-cats@reddit
Probably Vern
bell83@reddit
Mostly Gordie, because I was a writer, smart, quiet, and tended to be "the responsible one."
A little bit of Teddy, because of my weirdness and military interests.
SweetCosmicPope@reddit
I always most easily identified with Gordie. I didn't have the family tragedy for a background or anything like that, but personality-wise he always just clicked with me: smart, creative, adventurous but also a little bit of a worry wart.
But I absolutely knew people like all of the boys.
