I highly recommend jomboy's "watching guts" on YouTube. 3 guys rewatch all the episodes, draft players, and really make rewatching the episodes really fun.
From what I’ve heard from interviews with Kirk Fogg it was harder to do when looking at it from the back though the bigger thing was the stress and time pressure.
The funniest one to me was when one of the kids dropped a piece of the monkey over the railing. One of the crew that was out of frame tossed it back up and Kirk said it must have been a friendly temple spirit. lol.
Something you also have to remember is that game shows like that are filmed in batches. The entire first season (possibly the entire show) was filmed all at once before any of it aired. So we got to watch week-after-week as people who had never seen a single episode of the show kept messing up the same puzzle every time.
Good point. It was done seasonally and I believe it was 5 episodes filmed per day (I read about how they filmed it once but forget the exact number).
The really interesting part is they filmed each stage of the game separately. So they’d film each moat crossing one after the other, then each steps of knowledge, etc.
For the first taping though apparently they ran very late and also had all kinds of technical issues with the temple. So it was late and they were running the kids through the temple and having to stop down at times due to malfunctions and fix it. It sounded pretty miserable.
I also remember reading that the Shrine of the Silver Monkey was made intentionally difficult to assemble correctly in order to reduce the number of winners. LotHT did not have a large budget for grand prizes and couldn’t afford to have a bunch of folks win.
Bad news, one of the gals who won went on to be a stunt woman and had an accident and is now paraplegic. Can't remember the name off the top of my head sadly
They’d sit out all the events, casually watching the highly competitive “ninjas” tire themselves out, until the MegaCrag, bc it’s the only one that matters.
This made me curious so I looked up the scoring and it actually was possible, though unlikely, for someone to get into a situation where the Crag didn’t matter at all (except for being cool of course).
If someone got first place in all 4 events they’d have 1,200 points. In that situation the second highest possible score would be 800 points if one of the other contestants got all second places. In that case even if the person with 800 got first on the Crag and the person with 1,200 got third the contestant with 1,200 going in would still win 1,575 to 1,525.
This also kinda reminds me of that “phone” the girl who had a dad who was an alien would use to talk with her alien-dad in outer space. I liked that show lol.
I remember my best friend and I spending the summer after 3rd grade meeting up on the local playground damn near every day to train for the show. We lived in New York and obviously that was never going to happen lol
One time at a bar like 10 years ago, we got onto the topic of Nickelodeon Guts, and I told my friend, "I'm forever jealous that somewhere out there right now there is a 30-something with a glowing piece of the radical rock on their mantle"
They were. This was just posted earlier today in the r/RetroNickelodeon sub. It was a DIY Tribute to the real thing (which is considerably larger and more detailed)
I've spent so long occasionally seeing this plate spinning/juggling/trick shot guy end up in my feed then one day it turned out he was married to Moira and it was the wildest possible crossover.

Here is my pitch, "Guts: Where are they now". We find the original contestants and have them compete again now in their 40s.
