Why's his shirt so big? Was that a thing? I don't remember that being a thing.
redditsucks13131@reddit
My step dad fucking hated this kid because he had "too much attitude" whatever the fuck that means. I always liked learning, so I would ask for the encyclopedia. He would get so pissed.
pump-n_munch@reddit
Where is he now?
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit (OP)
Aw, Encyclopedia guy is a nepo baby?!
No-Channel3917@reddit
Imagine learning your father's trade to only be called a Nepo baby lol
Ffs lol
Baymavision@reddit
His father was a fucking comedic genius.

Hanksta2@reddit
Nepo or not, it was great casting.
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I was JTS (just talkin’ shit) but I can’t deny that he still pops up in the ol’ mind theater to this very literal day!
chonny@reddit
He lives forever in the Brittanica commercials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDFsBMrX_IM
Oubastet@reddit
He looks like he cuts his own hair, lol!
turntabletennis@reddit
"This guy looks like his Mom still cuts his hair!"
One of my favorite insults.
TooDamFast@reddit
I just picked up a 32 book set, mint condition, from 1991, for $16. They still smell like new.
Ambitious_Jelly8783@reddit
Out of date information for the win.
EatLard@reddit
Speaking of, I inherited my grandparents’ encyclopedias from the late 1950s. One chapter was “who will be the first spaceman?”.
fxpstclvrst@reddit
Leo Spaceman’s dad.
EAE8019@reddit
Honestly the way books are written now, he might have more in depth information , just on historical and basic scientific facts.
TooDamFast@reddit
Funny how much changes and how much doesn't. I love the way they look, feel, smell, and the nostalgia. My parents could not afford them and now they are just a decoration in my house.
goodnewzevery1@reddit
What’s that workout to in $ per lb?
TooDamFast@reddit
Amazon says the set is 135 pounds (which they are selling for $850) so $0.12 per pound! I moved them with multiple wheelbarrow trips. https://a.co/d/1j4wbCj
TP_Crisis_2020@reddit
One of my biggest regrets was getting rid of the 1989 world book set my parents bought me when I was in school.
blove135@reddit
$16? I'm surprised they didn't pay you to take them.
313Wolverine@reddit
I always wondered where my mandibular was.
MoulanRougeFae@reddit
We have the 2010 32 book set. We bought it because it was the last time it was going to be printed. We also have the 1943 edition that was the last time it was printed by Sears. The World Atlas from 1942 is also part of our collection. I want to track down the 10 Eventful Years they published about WW2 but it's hard to find in any sort of decent shape.
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit (OP)
How much did a new set cost in 2010, if you don’t mind me asking/can even remember?
MoulanRougeFae@reddit
I honestly don't remember how much we spent.
brokenman82@reddit
My parents never bought these for me. I was set up to fail from the very beginning. Curse you mom and dad!
Instrument-of-elks@reddit
We had the World Book Encyclopedia, 1989 edition.
I can’t even express how important those dang books were to me. I would read them constantly, just picking a random letter, going through it and reading the topics I found interesting. I do the same thing with Wikipedia now.
I still have them on my bookshelf today.
col_akir_nakesh@reddit
I preferred World Book tbh. We got a Funk & Wagnalls set.
Klinky1984@reddit
No Teddy Ruxpin, no Power Wheels, no Encyclopedia Britannica. It's like our parents didn't love us.
Turbulent-Pea-8826@reddit
Even my poor ass parents bought me an encyclopedia set. It was probably the generic version but still
goodnewzevery1@reddit
My Dad got them. From that point on any question I had for him was immediately referred to my Encyclopedia set.. which as it turns out, did not have comprehensive knowledge on all subjects.
Switchbladekitten@reddit
Same…and now he tells me to Ask Jeeves. Does my dad know anything?!
free-toe-pie@reddit
I was a kid who would have enjoyed having a set of encyclopedias. Because I would constant question and wonder about things but got no answers. Now I can Google. Which I love.
LetGo_n_LetDarwin@reddit
I wanted those encyclopedias so bad…never got them 😞
Not_me_no_way@reddit
There's plenty of us around, don't feel alone...
Dakaf@reddit
Encyclopedia salesman was probably one of the fastest dying occupations in the mid 90’s.
Turtis_Luhszechuan@reddit
The "encyclopedia fight" is one of my childhood memories.
Mom insisted my father buy an encyclopedia set, mom and dad had a fight while the salesman was there, the salesman walking out shouting.
The encyclopedia set, probably several thousand dollars, was bought
This was like 1992 or 93 so a PC with Encarta was right around the corner.
I think I used the encyclopedia once for school. The books were rotting away in my grandma's basement decades later after the divorce
So good riddance encyclopedia salesmen! Lol

maggie320@reddit
Even at 9 years old that irritated me.
Lumpy_Departure_4086@reddit
Nelson mandibula?
greenhornblue@reddit
My first thought here
VVrayth@reddit
If you remember this guy, it's probably time to schedule your colonoscopy!
Dimplefrom-YA@reddit
i won't lie.. i loved encyclopedias. I would read through them for fun.
I don't have the same feelings for wikipedia.. but yeah it is easier to search for topics online nowadays. Chatgpt does a decent job also
Ambitious_Jelly8783@reddit
Encarta was great for this, too.
Aselleus@reddit
Encarta 95!
Ambitious_Jelly8783@reddit
Mind Maze, anyone?
orangejeep@reddit
My people!
Weird question: did you have a favorite letter? Loved airplanes growing up so lots of time in the A volume.
relikter@reddit
That shirt. Those sleeves.
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit (OP)
Bordering on blouse, honestly
Salty-Woodpecker-951@reddit
He always wondered where his mandibula was…

David Grohl once said he was supposed to be in the video for Nirvana's "In Bloom" but he wasn't available so they got Doug Llewelyn from People's Court instead.
Sad_Researcher_3344@reddit
Got a B+
Rattler_@reddit
in deep voice "why not an A?" 😂
chonny@reddit
You know- that deep voice was everywhere on TV as a kid like in Bill Nye the Science Guy, and the Hey Dude theme song.
FriedBreakfast@reddit
Too long. I found so much great information I put it all in. Overkill.
Adrasteia-One@reddit
Haha, I can remember these lines like it was just yesterday.
Outrageous_Lettuce44@reddit
Found so much great information, he put it all in. Overkill.
Siphoneder@reddit
He was going to be the host on the In Bloom video for Nirvana, but he got sick before the shoot. So they got the guy from The People’s Court instead.
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit (OP)
Doug Llewelyn!
FatXThor34@reddit
Stupid rich kid.
dan7769@reddit
My parents had a set from 1967. Still not sure how Vietnam turned out.
Nisi-Marie@reddit
I want a rumble between that guy and these guys
soopirV@reddit
I had to rely on a 1973 set of World Books…
LardLad00@reddit
They were good enough for your uncle and they're good enough for you!
Valahiru@reddit
Nothing like needing information on a subject only to find out your expensive encyclopedia only offers a couple paragraphs on the subject with information that you mostly already knew.
LardLad00@reddit
And is from before the fall of the USSR
a_new_wave@reddit
wow
lkmyntz@reddit
True story
My parents bought a used set from the library and when I went to research my project on space, I was met with “one day, we hope to land a man on the moon.”
kinetic_cheese@reddit
Haha, my parents also have a set that predates the moon landing. I think they're from 1967. I used to think the entry about computers was hilarious as a kid because the pictures would be of computers bigger than a refrigerator.
LineImpossible3958@reddit
One the best commercials of our generation

And I definitely wrote some middle school reports using sourcing from my family set of encyclopedia Britannica’s
MelodiousPun@reddit
Last I heard he made it through Checkpoint Charlie by the skin of his teeth.
deleted_opinions@reddit
The most unfuckable guy in the entire decade.....
Wabbit65@reddit
I (60M) was also young enough to remember that they printed out Wikipedia.
RotaryRich@reddit
Was Phil Hartman the voice over?
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit (OP)
No but I think it might’ve been the Gummi Bears narrator
RotaryRich@reddit
It seems to be Pat Cashman, at least according to what others remember.
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit (OP)
This comment says it was his dad, voice actor (amongst other things) Stan Freberg, and you know what? I believe ‘em!
esomers80@reddit
Fuck that kid and his air jordan 4's he was wearing
ToBePacific@reddit
“I always wanted to be a secret agent. You know! Make it through checkpoint Charlie by the skin of my teeth.”
GreenZebra23@reddit
Just a few years ago I learned he is the son of comedy music legend Stan Freberg, who directed the video and narrates it. Once I know it it was so obviously his voice, and the kid looks just like him when he was young
PandaHombre92055@reddit
Hell yeah.
Historical-Client-78@reddit
I know him. One of the nicest guys I’ve ever met!
Never_Rule1608@reddit
I needed this laugh today - thank you
ewokparts@reddit
I got the 86’ set
vivahermione@reddit
I see Elton John!
talrich@reddit
Shoot, and there I was in the library with the World Book Encyclopedia, like a peasant.
Spamcan81@reddit
They would take up an entire bookcase and not even have any information on topics you want to look up.
GalaxyRedRanger@reddit
I swear the character of Quinn Mallory on Sliders had to be based on this guy.
