Refueling in the rain?
Posted by Your_Answer_Is_No@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 18 comments
Hey guys, I was thinking about going out and flying today to get some fuel from a neighboring airport, but I see it's supposed to rain tomorrow and I'd LOVE to get some IMC/approaches in. However, thinking about it, is it advisable to fuel while it's raining? I know I'd need to sunp fuel a few minutes after refueling, but I wanted to get some insight. Any thoughts? TIA!

Poor man’s methanol injection. It’s good for timing. Pour a little extra in there if you’re feeling crazy.

A normal rain isn't going to cause any issues. Probably wouldn't see any noticeable issues during a monsoon, but I wouldn't refuel during peak monsoon.

Just use the single point! 😁

instructions unclear, Skyhawk cabin now full of 100LL
sassinator13@reddit
Ha, there’s not a Skyhawk cabin in the world that wouldn’t leak it out faster than you could pump it in.

All good, but you must now refer to it as the "Ferry tank" rather than cabin....

Torrential downpour? Yeah, wait until that lets up. Normal light rain, not a big deal. Just wait a bit and sump.
Most importantly, don't slip off a wet ladder.

Jesus. This is exactly how my klutzy ass brother would die in an “aviation” accident.

“Probable cause: fluid mismanagement—rainwater”

Have you heard of umbrellas?

You could drape a towel or plastic sheet over the pump nozzle/filler hole.

Send the figure on the iPad, pressurised pipe is connected under the wing, 20t of JetA1 is pumped on while the FO does their walk around and comes back soaking and grumpy.
Drink coffee and have a snack.
Not sure I see the issue

A few drops from a light drizzle shouldn't be a problem. Just don't leave the caps open for any longer than they need to be. If it's a very heavy torrential downpour then that's a different story. You could try using an umbrella while fueling up, but that might be kind of clunky.

I've never had an issue. A few drops in 26 gallons isn't enough to make a difference.
fungus909@reddit
Might be a little clumsy but you could use an umbrella. Would keep you dryish too.
AWACS_Bandog@reddit
Depends. Light rain? As a lineman we could generally put something else over the top of the port and keep it dry. Heavy rain? Yeah no way unless its a single point hookup

If I had a dollar for every time I fueled an airplane via overwing in the rain, I'd have enough money to pay for at least one of those fuelings.
