ULPT request: I need to gain weight quickly
Posted by overdose_ofdeath@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 130 comments
My job has high health requiemts, and I’ve been losing weight for 2 years to the point where I look like an aushwitz prisoner and unfamiliar people feel uncomfortable even looking at me despite me having good social skills, and now my boss is throwing comedic remarks about sending me to a hospital.
I have (recently diagnosed) celiac, but other than that I have no qualms with anything.
I’ll be doing this for a short period of time, and hopefully after that I can get my life back in order and keep myself at standard weight.
realdappermuis@reddit
I also eat gluten free - my advice is potatoes. Potatoes and fat - butter or odourless coconut oil works
You can make mash with just potato, a bit of water (or milk if your stomach doesn't mind it), and fat
Mash is cool for breakfast too
Latkes is my second favorite, fries are an effort but also good
Pretty much the way to gain weight is carbs + fat together
I'm also too skinny (health issue, nothing I can do) so I wear strategic clothing so random strangers in the street don't smite me. Potatoes for sure save me from becoming underweight
steviepoppins@reddit
Mash is the way.
I broke my jaw and couldn’t chew anything for 6 weeks so lost heaps of weight. But turns out mash is the one. You can lace it with all sorts of tasty, loads of butter, blue cheese or just cheese, cream it’s amazing.
Top note the best frozen mash is McCain.
KahurangiNZ@reddit
Or instant potato flakes - I make mash with all milk (no water), plenty of butter, maybe some sour cream, S&P, a bit of smoked paprika, fried shallots and fried garlic. Heat everything except the potato flakes to 'infuse' the milk, then mix in enough flakes to get the consistency you want.
Thick, rich and DELICIOUS!
realdappermuis@reddit
Oh yes cream for sure! I was actually going to make that this week. My family used to do it in the microwave in a large oven safe dish with a lid and eat it for days. Slice up potatoes, add cream & salt and pepper = sorted
Cheese is also a great idea (I am now hungrrry)
Acegonia@reddit
Irish here- water in a mash is feckin blasphemy! Even using a 'watery'spud in a mash will get you the sideeye. You want milk and butter. Or cream and butter. Or even just way, way more butter.
PheonixKernow@reddit
I'm in a calorie deficit and lost 70lbs, 15 more to go. I haven't eaten mash in 9 months as I have to make it with tons of double cream and butter.
My first meal when I get to goal will be sausage, mash, peas and onion gravy as sausages are currently out too.
That meal is probably my full daily calorie allowance but I'd never switch how I make it, I'd rather just temporarily go without!
Amonette2012@reddit
Nice weight loss!! Bet you look great!
PheonixKernow@reddit
Thank you! And I do, for the first time in a while lol.
realdappermuis@reddit
It's just an easy substitute for dairy - especially considering OP has a dodgy stomach, so dairy likely wouldn't be a great idea
It's the fat that makes it creamy - so I add alot of that and mash it well
I went dairy free at the same time as gluten free and stayed that way for like, a decade. I've gone back to dairy now but honestly I don't notice the difference with water as a sub for milk. Though ofc YMMV because my taste buds have adapted to subs and I only eat food I make myself, so who really knows what it aćtually tastes like to normal people, lolll
the_honest_liar@reddit
Could chop up and cook a bunch of bacon, then put the bacon and fat in the potatoes.
Acegonia@reddit
Fair enough, but op specifically wants to put on weight. And they are celiac- putting on weight means fats or carbs, and ofnits celiac then surely fats are the way to go
Its definitely a better suggestion than booze or liters of soda as has also been suggested!
Also- (im just giving you shite here, you do you, of course) but if you can't tell the difference between a mash made with dairy vs one made with water then my profound condolences on the loss of your tastebuds/palate. And also would you be interested in dating my elderly irish mammy? (Who i love dearly, but cursed me to grow up eating shite mash)
miasysinthelou@reddit
I laughed out loud reading this. Like, really loud and scared my cat. Absolutely stealing 'my profound condolences' for future use.
goonalias@reddit
Water is absolute madness.
Pedal2Medal2@reddit
What’s this nonsense about adding water to mashed potatoes?
Apex_Hashira@reddit
my mom does alterations at home and always pushes rice with everything when i look too skinny. potato latkes with sour cream sound way better though... might steal that breakfast idea
GrookeTF@reddit
Look up "Robuchon" mashed potatoes if you want to see just how much fat you can add to mashed potatoes XD
Emergency-Kale5033@reddit
Why have you allowed yourself to lose that much weight you’re skeletal. Sounds as if you enjoy looking like that. Even with coeliacs, there’s no need for that. So grow up and take care of your diet and your condition.
Sk8nG8r@reddit
Eating high-calorie meals and snacks late at night (ice cream, cheesy potatoes, microwave nachos, sugary drinks, huge extra meals, etc.) works well for this. Sleeping very little can also help pack on the pounds, as well as moving your body as little as possible.
*Note: You may also feel really tired, sluggish, and mentally unhealthy doing things. I don't recommend these tips, but they definitely can contribute to weight gain.
EdgeLordPrime859@reddit

GiggleFester@reddit
Peanut butter has 100 calories per tablespoon. I've used it to gain weight in the past. Easy to eat right off the spoon. Don't know whether or not it's compatible with your celiac disease.
andybaran@reddit
Have you tried piss discs?

Seems like you want an unhealthy life pro tip. Here's an unethical life pro tip you could run alongside that.
Find a social cause your boss deeply cares about.
Make up a series of posts or fake website documenting your fast to protest xyz or in solidarity of xyz. If it makes sense, tie it into some religion or religious obligation.
Ensure the posts or website entries are backdated, clearly stating your fast is now over. Claim you'll still be involved with the cause, but not on such an extreme level.
Tie it to a QR code or something. Leave it out somewhere and let your boss find it. Make sure they find it and visit the website, but never bring it up. You'll probably know if they start talking to you differently. Act humble and embarrassed if they bring it up.
Now you can milk it in the future, maybe for some PTO, maybe favorably for a raise.
Henri_Bemis@reddit
This.
Don’t fuck up your body. Your boss can’t send you to a hospital just because you’re thin. He can’t drag you there. He could call an ambulance, but the EMTs will quickly realize you’re fine - you can even explain the situation to them, in front of him.
He could send you home and try to dock your pay. Get a note from your doctor that you are medically fit to work.
Really, how far could he possibly push this?
Freshouttapatience@reddit
Some of my family have health conditions that cause severe weight loss. Lots of protein and several meal replacement drinks a day - meal replacements, not just protein shakes. Our favorite is huel with bananas in a blender. Also tell your boss to shut his fat mouth - they’re bullying you for a medical issue.
Wide-Bumblebee1941@reddit

First, follow a strict celiac diet, because without this you won't gain weight. Second, get a prescription and buy mirtazapine. It's an antidepressant that makes you want to eat and eat.

Do the opposite of whatever good advice exists for people wanting to lose weight.
Drink soda and beer regularly, eat very little fiber (until you get some weight on), snack constantly, eat processed foods and snacks, eat lots of fries. You should get some weight on pretty quick.

Tight-Ad-7059@reddit

If they’re not, it’s a recipe to keep him shackled to a toilet.
Crackytacks@reddit
Yes and also suitable for lactose intolerance which especially after just being diagnosed, most people with celiac can't have much lactose. I lost the ability to make the enzyme that digests lactose almost completely from being celiac, so I still can only eat really low lactose foods like sharp cheddar.
I actually like ensure but for some reason I can digest boost better, but my favorite is orgain plant based, but theres not the high calorie ones like you can just slam with boost and ensure
serenwipiti@reddit
Ah! I tried Origin once, but I couldn’t handle something about the sweetener’s aftertaste. Now I kind of want to look up what kinds of sweeteners they contain…
Thankfully, I don’t suffer from LI or CD, but I definitely drank a whole lot of Ensure to add/maintain weight. I still reach for it if I’m in a rush.
One of my morning “hacks” was adding a couple of teaspoons of instant coffee to a chocolate ensure, making sure to shake it well. Instant nutritional energy beverage! Kind of tasted like a mocha shake. ^hehe
I appreciate the information, thanks!
Crackytacks@reddit
No problem! And the orgain I drink has monk fruit mixed with cane sugar. I LOVE the taste. But I also might have minor MCAS thanks to sjogrens syndrome so I can't drink it as much now because I get allergic reactions to too much banana (?!).
They had one a while ago that was all fake sugars and it left a terrible aftertaste. Mixing with coffee is fun af, I used to freeze boost and then let itelt slightly and eat it like ice cream pfft.
serenwipiti@reddit
That was probably the one I tried. It made me make all sorts of faces after taking a sip. 😂
I’ll make sure to look at the label if I encounter it in the future, and would definitely give it another chance if it’s made with cane sugar.
That fucking sucks, finding something that works for you and then slowly have it turn on you….ugh. 😑
I really hope that you’re able to find a substitute (or a wider variety of products) that you love and that works for you (and many other people suffering from similar circumstances) in the near future!
❤️
Crackytacks@reddit
Oh yeaa the faces! If it was a plastic bottle it was definitely that one, they might have discontinued it because it was nasty! However, the regular ones in a carton my wife also thinks tastes bad haha.
Thanks for the empathy! It's very kind. At this point I'm allergic to like six things but then randomly react to other things in a nonsensical pattern. Sometimes I just wake up with hives like sleeping got me allergic or smth
I'm lucky that I don't need nutritional supplements as much now. I hope you find all things that help you and have a great day ❤

Drink boost or those meal replacement shakes. Drink them often and in addition to your regular diet. You’ll gain weight immediately.

Here's the real ULPT - Document every "joke" your coworkers make (preferably in email/Slack messages). Then sue them for hostile work environment.
swirlybat@reddit
any ulpt would be at the expense of your organs. if you start slamming protein shakes or dramatically increasing your proteins hard and heavy, your liver gets acute hepatitis (similar issue to yours but mine was nervous system related. wasnt absorbing. could eat aaaaanything. looked like bones and skin). increasing carbs affects kidneys, spleen, liver. in all of these you are definitely aggravating your gi system even more, making your problem worse. morals win over ethics on this one
tilldeathdoiparty@reddit
Go to the gym and talk to a personal trainer for a bit and figure out your macros.

CptnHnryAvry@reddit
OP is wondering where to steal the most calorie dense foods.
Crackytacks@reddit
In that case go work at a old folks home in the kitchen and take home tons of ensure like I did lmao (they did NOT care and told me to take whatever, I took great care of my elderly patients there).
Crackytacks@reddit
Idk why this is unethical lol. You'll only gain weight once the damage to your intestinal villi have recovered enough to once again absorb. So stop any gluten, barely malt, and even for now oats (some celiacs react to the gluten in oats such as I do, australia doesn't even let oats be recognized gluten free).
Basically make your own smoothies, put oil and nut butters in with some kind of protein powder, losts of bananas. Make tons of baked goods with high butter. You're gonna feel like shit if you gain this fast. Your stomach is gonna hurt. Just eat constantly. Like desserts and dense high calorie, don't waste time with vegetables or anything filling like rice. Just pound tons of muffins with extra butter, smoothies with oil, drink protein shakes or ensure/boost instead of water lol
breadmakerquaker@reddit
Hi, I’m also celiac. Start eating lots of ice cream. I’m talking breakfast, lunch, and dinner- and also right before bed. Especially right before bed. Other calorie dense foods: nuts. Good luck!
Crackytacks@reddit
I'm jealous! I lost the ability to break down lactose because of the damage from celiac before disgnosis. I make pretty much none of the enzyme and still can't digest lactaid products
PassionateProtector@reddit
No joke, ice cream in coffee instead of creamer. Delish
serenwipiti@reddit
Coffee ice cream in your coffee…
😻
I’ve also made some delicious coffee ice cream shakes.
I don’t have a gluten intolerance, but I can confirm, calorie dense and energizing.
ListenVeryHard@reddit
Ice cream on waffles is slept on.
For anything gluten free, froth just the egg whites before folding them into the batter and you'll get crazy volume, ideal for waffles, cakes, etc.

Milkshakes! I love making mine at home with Trader Joe’s vanilla ice cream, whole milk, a little cinnamon, and a banana.
But you can use any gluten-free ice cream of your choice. I also love Alden’s brand, which you can find at Whole Foods.
GazelleSpringbok@reddit
One of the most important parts is that you make sure to eat high calorie foods right before you go to bed. When I wanted to lose weight all I had to do was cut out eating heavy food right before bed, worked wonders.
_BoxingTheStars_@reddit
Unhealthily? Melt down pints of ice cream and drink them.
Healthily? You need to move into a calorie surplus. Eating higher (healthy) fat content and carbs will help you. Things like rice, bananas, avocados, peanut butter, dried fruit, etc.
aabum@reddit
There isn't an unethical tip to be had for your situation. The easiest thing to do is tell your boss you were recently diagnosed with celiac disease, which is why you've lost so much weight. That you are now following a diet that will allow your GI system to heal. Once healed, you will be able to gain weight.
Dibcharge_@reddit
Real talk a second.
Friend, go get some help. Medical and possibly mental health support, extreme weight loss can and will do a number on you, and not just physically. Report your fuckin shithead boss to whoever will listen and try to do this as healthily as you can, you’ll need to recover from celiac first or you’ll do more damage than you can reverse with a healthy lifestyle.
Failing that, buckets of melted dairy free ice cream.
Devil_May_Kare@reddit
If you need to raise your appetite and weed isn't doing enough, I'm told MK-677 raises appetite a lot. It also probably raises your cancer risk, might damage your liver, and isn't FDA approved for use in humans, so... it's certainly a tradeoff.
eribear2121@reddit
No more gluten then get gluten free ice-cream, milkshakes, there meal replacement drinks like ensure. Drink calories
hylenium@reddit
Short term: Chocolate, nuts (macadamia and sunflower are highest), and bacon. I remember watching a British program that had 10 naturally skinny people attempt to eat 10,000 calories/day for a month to see what would happen to their body composition. The biggest issue they faced was the sheer volume of food this entails so many targeted high caloric density foods (high calories, low volume).
Long term: religiously nix gluten from your diet (any presence will reduce nutrient absorption) and get your celiac under control. From ingredients to preparation environment, ensure the food and prep station does not come in contact with gluten.
CackleberryOmelettes@reddit
Peanut butter, potatoes with butter and cheese, and ice cream are your best friends.

Ice cream. Lots. But make sure it is like the 5 ingredient kind (Haagen Daz) makes one) with no gums in it. With celiac your intestines are already kind of messed up and gums will not help that.

Omnitragedy@reddit
Unfortunately with Celiac Disease , you need to cut out gluten entirely, or else anything you eat by mouth will be severely under-absorbed by your intestines. The best way to gain back the weight is to unfortunately get the Celiac under control by cutting out gluten entirely, and it takes a bit for your intestines to heal after making this change too.

Lots of rice/grain bowls/noodles, coconut milk curry sauce, nut butter sauce, spicy mayo, etc. Make your own trail mix/granola bars from nuts, seeds, chocolate, and dried fruit. Make sure you hit the gym while you’re “Gaining weight” and lift heavy weights frequently. Adopt a muscle building/hypertrophy program.
You will feel much better 50 pounds heavier with ~25 of those pounds being muscme than 50 pounds heavier and only ~5 pounds of muscle
Building good, healthy, weight takes time and a moderate surplus. Track your calories and estimate your TDEE. Since you’re underweight and don’t seem to care about fat gain you should shoot for between a 200-600 surplus. Anything more is just extra, unhealthy fat gain. This should make you gain up to 1 pound a week.
Make sure you keep exercising. And progressive overload. You got this!

I'm gonna be honest....that's probably too much work for OP.
Nubian_Cavalry@reddit
Being 50 pounds heavier with no lean mass to support it wil be much more work for OP. Being skinny fat is terrible and hard to fix
It really isn’t aloof of work. Just a handful of reputations at a weight that’s challenging, meaning they only really have to do 3 lifts 4-9 times 3 times a week. It’s difficult to be consistent with, but it’s not at all complex

Celiac disease causes very poor vitamin absorption. This persists even after a perfect gluten-free diet. This is definitely where vitamin supplementation is mandatory. B12 deficiency is common, but you need to cover everything with help of a doctor. Research clinics that specialize in celiac. Columbia U. has one.
Be sure to check the ingredients for BARLEY. it's an increasingly common ingredient that's not listed as an allergen.
Don't lick glue on envelopes, it often contains wheat. Watch soups and sauces. They're often thickened with flour.
You have a VERY serious problem Celiac disease can cause death !!! Please, please, get specialized medical attention. Forcing calories will NOT cure your problem.
