It can do vector based math incredibly quickly, which is very useful for path finding, for instance. It also excels at repetitive data tasks, or iterative data. The downside, of course, is that these tasks need to be assigned by the main processor, so the SPUs can’t do much “autonomously” unlike traditional CPU cores. It’s more like a GPU, which gets frame data from the CPU to know what to render, but can render image data with insane speed compared to any general purpose CPU core.
The sales clerk any time I ever went into Radio Shack to buy like, a $3.00 spool of solder or whatever:
"Can I get your phone number to look up your account? No? Are you sure? We just want to make sure we've got you set up in our system.
No? Well, what about an mailing address so we can start sending you our weekly ad? No? There's exclusive coupons in there that you won't know about unless you receive our mailer.
No? What about just your Zip Code? Why? Well, we like to know where are customers are located so we can target our advertising.
12345? Did I hear you right? Is that a real Zip Code? Yeah? OK, if you say so.
We've got 25% off C- and D-cell batteries this week, do you want to stock up on those?
Wait! You can't just leave $3.50 on the counter and walk out! We still have 9 or 10 questions to ask you before we can actually sell you anything!"
Tbh I see the point, I was able to run games like wuchang and clair obscur on my 3050 laptop with optimization mods. If some random guy on nexus mods can fix the game, why couldn't a team of devs just optimize it from the get go. But seriously I wish they cared more about older hardware instead of expecting everyone has access to the latest piece of gear. Really wanted to play ff16 but it absolutely doesn't run on my hardware.
Now, in every computer around the world there exists a key combination with one singular purpose - to stop the program and instantly close it. In most computers, that combination is "Alt + F4". And that's what they thought, they did it all with the assumption that they could safely quit the program at any moment, but with the unoptimization HE CAUSED, they couldn't. The frames are too low, the temperature is too high, and it will keep rising, with nothing else to stop it.
Unreal Engine Version 5 is now a nuclear bomb.
1:23:44 - Akimov initiates Alt + F4, instantly giving the command for the process to shut down.
The program freezes, but the sounds start looping. Akimov presses it several more times.
In an instant, the entire computer freezes up from the excess overflow of commands, which leads us to...
imagine, if you will, all the paintings falling from the walls of the Louvre at the same time. now imagine that 100 times over. that’s the reality of your frame drops.
To be fair, many devs started development cycles when UE5 came out and had such heavy marketing, anyone who said anything bad against ue5 was buried, and UE5 kept essentially lying to devs that it’s the everything tool. Of course, devs should actually be checking that their tool is actually the same one that was advertised, which is finally happening now that people are realising just how shit ue5 really is
OF COURSE I KNOW THEYRE LISTENING! I WANT THEM TO HEAR! I WANT THEM TO HEAR IT ALL! DO YOU KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE?! TELL THOSE GENIUSES WHAT THEY HAVE DONE! I DON'T GIVE A FUCK! TELL THEM! GO TELL THEM! KOJIMA! GO TELL GABE NEWELL! TELL FUCKING TODD HOWARD! TELL THEM!"

It's like the ol' PS3 conundrum:
If your console has the most computational power on the market but there is no dev to harness it, is your console powerful?
MrSansMan23@reddit
Not the most powerful in the traditional sense
It was more powerful in that they had separate chips that could do stuff like npc ai/pathfinding.
offloading the load of the cpu and gpu to be able to do more by them having to do less.
Wasn't used to its full potetional till the near end of the ps3 lifespan cause it was too new and different for developers to start using it
harveyshinanigan@reddit
so it was like the atari jaguar
IrregularrAF@reddit
Also important to note, most games are being designed for multiple consoles. Why fine tune specific hardware when I can just make sure it runs.

yea but ps3 lived in the golden era of exclusives so there were plenty games made just for that console

How would a chip be optimized to do pathfinding or npc ai as opposed to regular computations?
TeckFire@reddit
