There was a compartment there in which mail & stuff could be stowed.
I've never seen this photo before, and it doesn't appear on Tineye or Google image searches, which leads me to believe it's AI. But I don't see anything there that's obviously AI generated. Where did you find it?

The nose cone is swung open, that's all that is.
What they were doing "opening a thing that opens on the airplayne" is anyone's guess.
