I found the guy that's going to dig the new Popperville Town Hall basement! Word on the street is he can dig as much in a day as a hundred men could dig in a week.

I had a cat named Mrs. McGillycuddy.

Whenever I say “Why not?” I frequently silently add “said Mr. Henry B Swap” and chuckle to myself

My favorite book as a kid. Paying it forward and gave a copy to my niece for her newborn daughter.
HopelesslyHuman@reddit
How has no one posted this yet. I friggin loved this book as a kid and this made me laugh aloud when I saw it years ago. I've always kept it on hand since.

Is that a parody book?
HopelesslyHuman@reddit
It's just an edited picture of the cover meant to be funny.
Cephalopod_Dropbear@reddit
I was just talking to my kids about Mike Mulligan! One of my favorite books as a kid!
NachoNachoDan@reddit
Got my copy right here! I love this book
JustAnAgingMillenial@reddit
Just seeing it again makes me smile. I wonder if I still have mine somewhere...

One of my earliest favorite books. Next to the giant jam sandwich and ping the duck.
NachoNachoDan@reddit
Is Ping The Duck considered ok still? I loved the Five Chinese Brothers and thats considered culturally insensitive (which honestly i dont get given that its a story that highlights their brotherhood and strength)

My absolute favorite. My mom saved my copy and gave it to me to read to my son when he was born.
Gullible_Rich_7156@reddit
Classic story but I always found it to be somewhat creepy and disturbing that the steam shovel ended up forever entombed in the basement of the school, albeit keeping schoolchildren warm as a boiler.

Did anyone else read this as a kid? This one and the giant jam sandwich were my favorites back in the 80s
greaterwhiterwookiee@reddit
I read (past and present tense) it to my kids still but don’t remember it when I was a kid
AlienDelarge@reddit
I bought my kids a copy but its more r/silentgeneration things.

One of my favorite books as a kid. I read it to my son when he was little, and it quickly became one of his favorites, too.
RockItGuyDC@reddit
I loved that book!
Her name was Mary Anne.

Does anyone else remember the Mike Mulligan reference in Ramona the Pest?
The teacher reads the book to the class, and the class wants to know where Mike Mulligan was going to the bathroom throughout the day, and why he didn’t realize that he hadn’t left a way out of the hole on a bathroom break.
AlienDelarge@reddit
He was too dehydrated to need a break and just smoked his way through the day.
gerardkimblefarthing@reddit
I read this a hundred times as a kid and only later realized it's Cask of Amontillado for children. Only they made Fortunato put up the bricks himself.
Squallloire3@reddit
Wow, I’d forgotten that book existed. Thanks for the flashback.
blove135@reddit
SNORT!

Virginia Lee Burton was one of my favorite authors as a kid. The Little House was my all time favorite book. I still have Mike Mulligan and The Little House, and have introduced them to my son.
CorkFado@reddit
My FIL gave my daughter this book when she was little and she immediately latched onto it because of how long it is. Kid was always looking for a bedtime stay-of-execution.
Natural-Ad-3666@reddit (OP)
Smart kid.
Pure-Shoe-4065@reddit
Bro! Loved that book!!!! Man thanks for the feels
rifunseeker@reddit
I don’t recall reading it as a kid but definitely read it to mine a whole lot.
Natural-Ad-3666@reddit (OP)
I was very happy that my kids enjoyed it too. Seems so old fashioned that I was surprised they’d even tolerate it.
sparkyoliver1@reddit
i loved mike mulligan…i know the story is older, but was it a little golden book?
Natural-Ad-3666@reddit (OP)
I don’t know if it was a golden book too, but my copy was a board book.
munistadium@reddit
Better leave himself a way out.
EngineerSafet@reddit
he always wanted to be a boiler

I’ve read this one to my kids 1000 times. It’s a classic.
