Trying to get my Heybike race 27.5 to go 28 mph (max speed) it won’t do it when I fiddle with the settings… can anyone please help me?

tires is what made the difference on mine. Stock tires i couldnt keep 28 mph with peddles. after new tires and proper psi 28 aint bad at all.
Otherwise-Oil-5468@reddit
what tires did u change - did u change the size of the acc rims or just the tread
yzscrum@reddit
I got Continental contact Urban. They are so light and smooth they fly on pavement. Could ride in parks no motor with them.
Tokinruski@reddit
28 max speed is in ideal conditions probably going downhill
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
Ah okay
Gobbelcoque@reddit
You also have a class 2 bike. Throttles cannot legally be allowed past 20mph. That bike is stuck at 20mph. You push it to 28, it needs a permanent re-label to be class 3 on the frame, you cannot use the throttle past 20, pedal assist only to 28.
Also, you need to put a chain on it. It's illegal to have non functional pedals on an ebike.
celeste_ferret@reddit
Legally, Class 3s can't have throttles.
Gobbelcoque@reddit
Yes, but the reality is that a majority of them do, and they just kinda justify it by having the throttle stop at 20. If you have that, on n otherwise normal and legak bike, you're unlikely to have an issue (for instance, the bike I want with the specs and price always comes with a throttle. I don't have a choice. So I just don't use it except for sometimes when I'm pointing up hill from a stop to help get that first 1-2mph)
sanjosethrower@reddit
You most certainly did have a choice. No one forced you to buy something that isn’t legally an electric bicycle.
yarn_slinger@reddit
Pedal harder?
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
No chain gang
sanjosethrower@reddit
So your bike is registered as a motor vehicle, or do you only ride it on private property?
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
Huh? It’s supposed to have a chain but when I got it from my friend it didn’t have one I just run the motor
sanjosethrower@reddit
You are not riding an electric bicycle as your bike doesn’t have working pedals. So to be ridden on public roads it almost certainly requires registration.
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
None of the cops here care big dawg
InviteStriking1427@reddit
You need to peddle harder, even at 750 watts the motors are not strong enough to reach 28 mph by themselves. That or your bike is class 2 and is locked at 20 mph with out reprogramming the controller from a computer.
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
I got this off my friend for free, it didn’t have a chain I run it solely off of the motor
InviteStriking1427@reddit
Yeah, your not gonna be getting anywhere close to 28 with out pedal power, add the chain back, make sure the derailers are working, then maybe, with enough effort you can go 28. Even class 3 bikes will only go 28 during assist.
celeste_ferret@reddit
Class 3s have pedal assist up to 28mph and no throttles.
Throttled ebikes are legally capped at 20mph.
InviteStriking1427@reddit
A lot have throttle to 20 and assist to 28.
celeste_ferret@reddit
The addition of a throttle to a bike that has pedal assist up to 28mph pushes it beyond Class 3 and into illegal territory no matter where that throttle cuts out.
InviteStriking1427@reddit
Doesn't seem to be the case in WA, throttle is almost standerd here. Unless theres just a whole Lotta illegal e-bikes being sold here.
celeste_ferret@reddit
A whole lot of illegal ebikes are sold everywhere. They're actually legal on private property and OHV areas, so they can be sold - just can't be legally used on bike infrastructure or roadways.
InviteStriking1427@reddit
That sounds specific to different states. Each state has there own rules and regulations. There is no national ruling on e-bikes so far.
celeste_ferret@reddit
https://dnr.wa.gov/recreation/recreation-planning/e-bike-rules-and-regulations
Class 2: motor cannot provide assistance above 20mph
Class 3: motor provides assistance only when pedaling
sanjosethrower@reddit
There is not that much variability on the basics of electric bicycle laws across the states. You can get summaries for each state from People for Bikes.
sanjosethrower@reddit
Here’s your reference for Washington that shows your bike does not meet the definition of an electric bicycle in your state.
Gobbelcoque@reddit
TECHNICALLY illegal but it's hard finding a good class 3 that doesn't do this. Even the big brands, I think (correct me if I'm wrong) schwinn even just capitulated and put a 20mph throttle on a class 3 recently
I like having a throttle for the first 2-5mph sometimes if I'm stopped on a hill. I just wish throttles were capped at 5mph, it'd fix basically all the ebike problems we have. Cop sees someone going faster than walking pace on flat ground or uphill without pedaling? Easy way to spot an illegal bike
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
Gotcha, thanks
Gobbelcoque@reddit
That's illegal, friend.
The pedals must be fully functional and connected to the wheel for it to be an e-bike.
Throw a chain on it. It's only like 15 bucks.
The bike is not even meant to run on throttle only. It's not great for them, they're meant to be mostly pedaled.
Gobbelcoque@reddit
It's weird, my ride1up core 5 can actually hit it's 28mph cap fairly easily on flat ground (pedal assist only past 20 obviously) and it doesn't feel like it's at its screaming limit.
But my urtopia carbon feels like it actively and progressively reduces power as I get closer to its 25mph cap in "boost" mode. It's genuinely hard to hit 25 on flat ground. But it definitely has very noticeably more climbing power than the core 5 (weight is the same) on hills
I wonder if it has to do with the cadence sensor of the core 5 VS the torque sensor of the urtopia, with the core 5 throwing out max power all the way to 28 and the urtopia having a sloped off torque curve to make it feel more natural when it hits peak speed instead of a start-stop feeling.
funcentric@reddit
Don't worry about that 0.5mph. The speedometer is likely wrong anyway.
MickyBee73@reddit
Yeah, only GPS counts.
..Well, it does when I do a 'speed run', as most e-bike display readings are off by around 2 mph usually.
riddik702@reddit
Mine was off by 2mph also. Possible conspiracy yes? Jk but i calibrated the bike speedo by moving tire size one decimal point at a time. To my surprise it remained accurate over the entire speed range in the end.
PyroSAJ@reddit
Worth noting it might become inaccurate again as the tires wear.
MickyBee73@reddit
Sometimes with enough faffing about altering settings you can get it dialed in pretty accurate, but in general I'll tell.anyome who wants to know the true speed theyre going to at least use a GPS app.
More accurate than way. 🚲⚡👍
funcentric@reddit
Speed run? for what reason?
MickyBee73@reddit
Just to test top speed with different set-uo/higher voltage battery etc... always go by GPS as it's more accurate.
funcentric@reddit
Maybe there's a P setting you need to change or maybe there's a physical holdup along the drivetrain. Dirty chain, tight derailleur, etc.
MickyBee73@reddit
I hear you 👍 and my displays only like 1 mph at most out of whack, but some displays are never truly accurate no matter how long you mess about with the "P" settings, altering wheel size.etc etc..
I always go by GPS, it's just more accurate, so if anyone's saying..
"Hey, my E-Bike does 45mph and it's 48v!" ...
I'll tell them, try GPS then get back to us on that one 😂
funcentric@reddit
True. That's the only way to really get a standard for comparison. I ride other PEVs and it's the same way. GPS speed is the most accurate b/c every manufacturer has different fudge factors for their speed.
MickyBee73@reddit
Yeah exactly E-Brother, it's why the best E-Bike reviewers use a GPS app too, so they're not giving their audience a false idea of what the bike they're reviewing is capable of doing.
All (..well, most) manufacturers lie about range, and speed / power sometimes. 👍
kirkub@reddit
It's a joke, right? He probably means 27.5" tire size RaceMax. :) I have one of those and it peaks at about 21mph. Some people apparently unlocked it to 28mph but even after replacing the display/controller (sent to me by Heybike), I just gave up.
funcentric@reddit
I stand corrected. I read to fast or just didn't think a tire size would be relevant or didn't think a company would name their bike the size of its tires. Little odd, but yeah. I was wrong in reading that. But it's a Heybike. Can't expect too much out of stuff of that caliber.
kirkub@reddit
LOL. Yeah, I call mine "Hey, it's a... bike"
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
Nah it says on the label it’s 27.5 inch tires, it also says max speed is 28 mph I can only get it to about 23 ish
funcentric@reddit
ohhh, i totally misread that.
lmushu@reddit
Trying to go 28mph with no front brakes?
kayneos@reddit
What voltage is the battery? I have a 500w motor with a 52v battery. Can do 25mph at 980w effective.
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
48v
kayneos@reddit
52v would get you there 100%
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
Ah maybe I should invest lol
Trick_Minute2259@reddit
You would have to upgrade the battery, controller, and display just to squeeze a little bit more out of the stock motor. Once you're looking at putting that kind of money into it, you might as well buy a 27.5" ebike kit with a bigger motor, or finding an unpowered rear rim and putting a middrive motor like a bbshd on it.
Trick_Minute2259@reddit
I have a racemax. It tops out at 24-25 with a full charge and a 160 lbs rider(me) on flat ground. You're not getting to 28 without a lot of pedal power or going downhill. They call it 750w, but it's really 500w.
riddik702@reddit
Slight downgrade and maximum effort. Mine tops at 28-30mph but somehow my tracker/gps speedo reports a top speed of 38mph twice and another at 42mph on another occasion. Somedays the road is a decent downhill and you feel strong like a horse. Why worry about ½mph. If you top it out with throttle(or easy pedal to max on maximum pas) then give a decent couple minutes of max power burst on the pedals you should do 30mph from the sound of it. Friggin christ i can burst pedal and achieve 42mph....on a fat tire ebike.
Lousynixon@reddit
Lose some weight!
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
2nd person to say ts🥀
Routine-Mechanic-814@reddit
Lose weight
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
So hateful
ThriftianaStoned@reddit
I get the way he said it comes across that way but the heavier you are the less speed you can achieve. I was going to say the same thing in a more tactful way. I use my bike for groceries and if im fully loaded up I lose about 2 or 4 miles off my top speed. I just weighed myself now and I weigh 135 pounds.
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
Nah I get u I’m a lineman so I’m a little more on the bigger side but mostly muscle but I feel u
Identd@reddit
Mostly muscle
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
Indeed
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
Ts is frying me
Curious-Dependent390@reddit
Bigger battery not gonna go faster without more power
Ohm_Slaw_@reddit
Top speed will be effected by terrain, pedaling, rider weight, rider posture, headwind/tailwind, tire inflation and many other factors. There is no standard for testing. None. I think what a lot of these bike brands do is raise the rear wheel off the ground, hit the throttle and see where the motor cuts out. If it's 28 MPH then that's the top speed.
wewouldmakegreatpets@reddit
Is heybike sorta like haibike but without the quality bicycle
ConcernCharming9475@reddit
Heybike is the biggest manufacturer you never heard of. Huge in Asia. I have same one as OP and 23mph is max on level ground ghost pedaling. I added a 43 tooth chain ring to help with top speed
ThriftianaStoned@reddit
I have the original Ranger and the fastest Ive gotten it is 25 (via gps) but the display says 27 using throttle.
turt_jons@reddit (OP)
48v
Smitty5717@reddit
Kinda looks like my hasion wish I could get mine to 25 lol
