Its Wikipedia page says, “Ralph Wilcox, director of historic preservation programs for Arkansas, believes it is one of only two telephone booths of this type in the state with a working phone.” Yes, the booth has its own Wikipedia page.

Can you imagine how many babies were made in there?

Arkansas and along a residential road as it appears to be? My guess is this is more a remnant of Jim Crow south than technological progress

Whatever it may be, it is history.

The one on the wall outside my local movie theatre lasted until the pandemic. Northwest Arkansas, building was originally a Walmart.

The lettering on that sign is really messed up.

Because it's AI. Just more clanker trash.

I’m curious about that phone book, how old it is, and what contents are still in it
jonthecpa@reddit
I live near there. Don’t fall for it, there’s nothing to see in Prairie Grove. Plenty else to see in the rest of Northwest Arkansas, though. Come visit.

Gotta wonder what the phone book inside looks like.

Tell your mama, tell your pa; I need to make a call in Arkansas.
gabotuit@reddit
Does it work
brakeb@reddit
Wouldn't be difficult to hold it up to a cellular modem to allow for calls to be made ...
gabotuit@reddit
This thing is still wired to an old switched phone network.

Always check for a description with these things: sometimes the post is more than the picture and title.

This should be next to a Circle K.
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit (OP)
That would be most triumphant.

Phone booths like that were already relics when we were growing up
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit (OP)
But not literally.

So Arkansas is like the only place you can leave the Matrix now?
FAHQRudy@reddit
You can hear it on the coconut telegraph…

There was one exactly like this on Main street of my small western Kansas hometown. I think it was removed when I was in fifth grade.

In the UK, a lot of phone boxes still exist in suburban or rural areas that have been turned into community 'libraries' of sorts. People leave books or toys or sometimes things like clothes or homeware for people to take. And some have been turned into mini museums/memorial/information centres for local sites of historical importance. There's one close to me that's been turned into centre for the manor house opposite that was the home to prominent suffragettes. I think it's an excellent use for obsolete structures.

Finally, a destination for when you really want to do some Bill & Ted's pictures!

Tourist areas in the UK feature the British K-series red telephone box. This is sort of the Arkansas equivalent of that.
