The scatering the ashes scene is sad

Am i the only one who thinks this scene is so sad. Not because donny is dead, but because of how Walter reacts to the dude being mad.
The whole movie is light and funny but that moment is heartbreaking: the dude gets mad at Walter for his rant and you can see for the first time Walter being scared of losing his friend. It shows how much of a broken man he is and how much losing the dude would be devastating for him. He loos like a kid who lost his mother in a supermarket
Just have a lot of empathy for him even tho he can be an asshole, kind of explains why hes an asshole sometimes too. Anyway, thats just, my opinion, man.
Frequent-Interest796@reddit
Just my opinion man…
But, I see the scene different. I see the same Walter, obtuse as ever. He thinks the Dude is yelling at him because he is upset over the loss of Donnie, not his ridiculous eulogy. He comforts the Dude in his time of grief.

Ill think about that next time i watch it, who knows, maybe youre right. (I still think my theory is cuter)
Alternative-Way-8753@reddit
I didn't like seeing Donny go.
HankScorpio82@reddit
But I happen to know there is a little Lebowski on the way.
Brother_Seamus2@reddit
Donny Lebowski is a fitting name.
HankScorpio82@reddit
Donald Harrington Lebowski.
Tiny_Mathematician_1@reddit
I take comfort in that

It’s good knowing he’s out there, the Dude, tak’in her easy for all us sinners.

You're not wrong, Walter, you're just an asshole.

No that scene was great, again trying to do the right thing and Walter's psychosis just overpowers everything, remember he is the one that got in the car with a bag full of dirty undies and a half assed plan, he takes the Dude's chill attitude and brings out the worst in him
Tiny_Mathematician_1@reddit
After the ashes, I kept waiting for Walter or the Dude or somebody to give me the answer to the most mysterious question raised in this film:
Who the fuck are the Knudsens?
MaryAnnZhlotnik@reddit
I’m honestly not sure if you’re joking or not…?

lol! I once went to a Lebowski themed costume party dressed as a middle aged white lady and handed out flyers I made of my missing daughter, Fawn Knudsen 😅

Pwnstix@reddit
Honestly felt the same way about it. A moment of harsh reality in an otherwise ridiculous comedy of errors. And then they hug it out because they're still friends and Donnie would want them to go bowling. Like fuck it, man, they were all happier just bowling anyway.

Walter stands there like a child, it is so sad.

That's the scene that makes me laugh the most. Am I wrong?
Critical-Shoulder873@reddit
No. While it’s definitely sad, it’s also quite hilarious, especially the look on the dude’s face when he’s covered with Donny’s ashes.
PianoMittens@reddit
I don't think it's unusual to have different reactions to a scene on multiple rewatches, particularly as you get a deeper feel for the characters.
That begrudging pat on Walter's back kills me now. Going from 3 to 2 is very significant, even when Donnie appears to be an incredibly participant in the relationship.
OxfordisShakespeare@reddit
You’re not wrong, you’re just an asshole.
The scene is played for laughs, but it certainly resonates with a lot of people, including me - the way Walter stands there with his head down, like a big lunk. He’s already lost Cynthia, Donnie, and all those fine young men who died faced down in the muck. He doesn’t want to lose the dude.
BeaEffigy@reddit
Fuck it Dude. Let's go bowling.

It’s all about friendship and loyalty. Walter is an Idiot, but he’s the Dude’s idiot. And the Dude is Walter’s idiot. They need and love each other. Best hug in the history of movies.
mxpx77@reddit
What in gods holy name are you blathering about?!
andytdj@reddit
I always tear up at that hug Walter gives The Dude. The first time Walter drops his bravado and actually apologizes.
BartStarrPaperboy@reddit
I guess that’s the way the whole durned human comedy keeps perpetuating itself
LevelGrounded@reddit
Just reading about the scene queues Dead Flowers in my head.
Ok_Jicama_96@reddit
It's that whole duality of man thing, Sir. Walter is every bit of the stereotypical Vietnam veteran but there's a good guy in there somewhere.
thefruitsofzellman@reddit
You better get your head and your ass wired together or I will take a giant shit on you.
jarheadsynapze@reddit
We gotta keep our heads until this whole peace craze blows over.
pumpkinbot@reddit
Yeah, it's the first time Walter actually backs down, admits he's in the wrong, and apologizes. It's powerful, for sure. Makes me think Walt, despite his brashness and aggression, values the Dude's opinion more than we think.
DarioJames@reddit
Fuck it Dude. Let go bowling.
anditcounts@reddit
Bummer. That’s a bummer.
sci-fi-rec@reddit
Fuck, Walter
cobarbob@reddit
100%. Walter is all bravado and is underneath an insecure guy. I think the dude knows Walter needs a good friend. Even if Walter can be a difficult friend sometime. The dude abides.
Be like the dude
puffycloudycloud@reddit
yea. the whole movie was building to that, and Donny's death forced the issue. the dude and Walter had a moment, a few honest words, a hug between brothers, and then the whole thing keeps perpetuating itself down through the generations
xxes4eyes@reddit
What a great movie
TheRealBaboo@reddit
That's just like our opinion man
Sad_Researcher_3344@reddit
The slow-mo bowling scenes show the same sad sympathy toward humankind as Vonnegut does to his silly doomed holy characters. One of the many things that is so smart and bighearted about TBL
vanillaninja777@reddit
Funerals are for the living. Walter fucked up the scattering of Donny's ashes, but that doesn't matter.
Walter showed that he was one of only two people who loved him.
