I was too cool to admit I liked Savage Garden.

Lucky for me, I was not that cool, so I could enjoy with impunity.
Bakingsquared80@reddit
I never understood their name. Sounds like a metal band or something but then it’s pop. Nothing savage about them
ElfDestruct@reddit
It's from Anne Rice books. If you remember Lestat from Interview with the Vampire... He goes on in the books to become a rock star. The "Savage Garden" is his view of the world, that the only two forces that matter are beauty and death. They seemed to be fans, and grabbed it for their band name.
Sort of Like Duran Duran being lifted from Barbarella, where the character Durand Durand tries to kill Barbarella by capturing her in and playing an organ-like device that is a literal sex machine (she can take more then it can dish out and it explodes).
Duran Duran does a bit of a better job of living up to their namesake than Savage Garden did, as far as I'm concerned.

One of my all time favorites and NO ONE REMEMBERS IT!!
digitalHalcyon@reddit
This song still gets me amped!
PearlyMickey@reddit
Agreed! Its amazing!
UbiquitousBot@reddit
criminally underrated song
lexluthor_i_am@reddit
When I was in high school in the late 90s i don't remember any shame in liking them. But then again my friends were all into gay ass music like me.
mizushimo@reddit
I taped this song off the radio onto a cassette tape when I was like, 13 or 14, it was definitely one of my favs.
d49k@reddit
For anyone interested, there's an active Darren Hayes / Savage Garden fan community over at r/DarrenHayes
KickRepresentative93@reddit
Bands loved their turtlenecks in the 90’s.
RoxyLA95@reddit
I was never into Savage Garden but it's okay for you to like them.
digitalHalcyon@reddit
I cannot be the only one..

Ima need to see those other cds... maybe a Hootie and the Blowfish? Definitely a Bangles ablum.

digitalHalcyon@reddit
No Blowfish...wasn't a fan. I'll get a picture. :) You called it on The Bangles! It's the album 'Everything.'
fondofbooks@reddit
You are not. I still have the cassette.
digitalHalcyon@reddit
Awesome!! I do too of the first album! I don't play it out of fear that my tape deck might have it for a snack.
I have a copy of it and the insert I made for my brother (who passed away in 2000). It was one of the last gifts I ever got him. The other was the album 'Wish You Were Here' by Pink Floyd - the irony is not lost on me.
fondofbooks@reddit
That's the one I have. The first album. I've been thinking about buying a walkman as I can't play any of my old cassettes and I have quite a lot. I'm so sorry about your brother. ❤️ I lost mine too in 1999. My husband is a huge Pink Floyd fan and I surprised him with tickets to Brit Floyd this year. Hearing them play Wish You Were Here made me tear up.
Remote-Car-5305@reddit
That’s too much 90’s for one photo.
digitalHalcyon@reddit
What's sad? It could have been worse. There's a huge bunch of CDs on my desk (my dad's old writing desk from the 70s). That's my Case Logic visor CD holder from my car - still rock the CDs, and there's another CD flip case in there. 🤣
Maybe I should post some of my ridiculous ability to never grow up and never let go of the 80s, 90s, and 00s.
xtlhogciao@reddit
I have CDs on my visor and another big book (that fits just barely) in that pouch behind the passenger seat…I mean, what else am I going to put in there…maps? Recently, after years of iTunes playlists via my phone in the car, I’ve gone back to listening to the radio (“Where’s 97.9 The Loop?…The River?”) and switching to CD if nothing’s on.
One thing I gotta say/I’d forgotten: A song is 10X better/more satisfying when it comes by surprise on the radio than simply choosing it on iTunes/wherever (never had Spotify/paid streaming subscription)…no better feeling than “No…no…no…come-errr-cialllls…nooo…n-…Yeah! Perfect!” (leans back into seat, elbow out window). Happened just yesterday with (the beginning of) Cranberries “Zombie”.
Also, there’s the songs that I either totally forgot about or for some reason hadn’t ever thought to add to a playlist. E.g. last week, “Mr. Jones” (the latter), couple days before that, Fastball’s “The Way” (the former.
digitalHalcyon@reddit
I'd listen to the radio here because I, too, miss commercials. However, in my area, nearly every commercial is political or religious (some are one in the same). It gets very old, very fast. I (kinda) wish my car had a cassette player - I've got a lot of old recordings of pop and rock and hip-hop stations from about '96 until '01.
xtlhogciao@reddit
Are you being sarcastic or serious about missing/liking commercials (except for the political/religious ones, obviously)? It’s cool if you do, but I was trying to portray flipping through the stations/presets for a good/any decent song to stop on, and finding nothing but junk and/or commercials. “Come-errr-ciallls” was meant as an annoyed sigh/groan; it’s also something I/presumably others would say if every other station/my presets I check are on commercial break (ntm bc the stations seem to sync their breaks together - either 1 out of 6 of my presets is on break or all of them).
digitalHalcyon@reddit
I was for sure not being negative in any way, more just telling how it is in my area. There aren't enough stations anymore to flip between. The old commercials I miss were funny and ridiculous! I do truly miss some of them. The station breaks sync sucks a lot with fewer stations - time slows to a crawl with no music in traffic. I'm with you, I bet they sync it, so we're made to listen to them shill for whomever. Ugh.
Anyway, just me relating to your explanation. We're all a bit different. 🙃
xtlhogciao@reddit
Oh, I didn’t think you were being negative. I just wanted to clarify what I said before (by clarifying your response to it, haha) bc there appeared to be a misunderstanding (thought, “either they mistakenly think that I like commercials or I’m misunderstanding something”).
Beyond that, I can’t relate to your area’s fewer stations (I get Chicago’s…and probably some of Milwaukee’s too), and there’s seemingly the same amt of stations now as 20 years ago (classic rock still fills up all 6 presets; lost aforementioned “Loop” and “River” replaced by 2 others in the time since I last listened to the radio).
I do have a nostalgia for older local commercials, but when I do - and this also goes for/is mainly regarding TV - I remember how annoying commercials are in general, and that, overall, we’re better off, now.
Basic-Biscotti-2375@reddit
Hell yeah

Are you me? I played the crap out of those two CDs
digitalHalcyon@reddit
🤙 I did too! I was the friend who friends could 'Crash and Burn' to. I still listen to them!

I saw Darren live at Sydney Opera House maybe 15 years ago 🌟
specks_of_dust@reddit
He was still at it up until a few years ago. Not sure what he's doing now. I did see that he medical episode that resulted in a bad fall this year, but he was back to good pretty quickly.
PeppermintEvilButler@reddit
He has a book out and a new album
specks_of_dust@reddit
I had no idea. I'll have to look into those. He seems like a really decent guy, so I'm down for showing some support!
PeppermintEvilButler@reddit
I follow him on fb and he posts pretty regularly. He & his husband just separated recently as well and he moved back from England to California and wrote his biography. Honestly nicest celeb I ever met. Signed all his previous cds for me at a signing for one of his newer ones at his met & greet. Sounds great live too

Yeah man. Guilty pleasures are kid shit. Now we’re old enough to just have guilt-free pleasures.
I was too cool to admit I liked Riverdance.
LuckoftheFryish@reddit (OP)
Hell yeah. I saw those ads on tv and was like "psh hah silly" but man I wanted to watch that shit.
Makes me think of Bobs Burgers and Bobs love of Stomp or whatever their version was called.
fenwoods@reddit
Lol oh yeah. Bob is always waking up to his feelings.
cardie82@reddit
Yup. I realized a few years ago that I don’t have guilty pleasure. I like what I like and don’t care if it’s cool.
RandyArgonianButler@reddit
I hate most of their stuff, but “To the Moon and Back” was legit.
BlueBomber13@reddit
I always think of Rosie O’Donnell when I hear this song because of how much she loved it .
physicscholar@reddit
Darren, the singer, actually credits Rosie for helping them get famous in the states.
He owns rights to their songs to play at concerts and had even had his own albums. but none have done as well, obviously
PeppermintEvilButler@reddit
Not in the states but abroad he did well. He lives in California
TiEmEnTi@reddit
Rosie O'Donnell and Savage Garden together is actually against the Geneva Convention
Secular-Flesh@reddit
I only know this song because of Rosie!
PeppermintEvilButler@reddit
Still love them and Darren Hayes had a solo career after the 2nd album. I was lucky enough to go to an event with him when he did a performance and signings and photos. He is so nice
usernames_suck_ok@reddit
Most people here still think they're "too cool" to admit it.
LoudAndCuddly@reddit

I wasn't fond of them until Crash and Burn was released. Then you'd best believe that song was on a near-constant loop when I was 18 or so.
the__ghola__hayt@reddit
I didn't go out of my way to listen to it, but I also didn't hate it. If it came on the radio, I'd enjoy it.
Hadn't heard any songs in quite a minute until a friend got me to binge watch an anime that had "I Want You" as an end credit song.

I was a tween and thought they were SO HOT. This and the movie Labyrinth were my awakening.

I always liked them. I was 14 when their first album came out, and I played the hell out of that album. I loved the second one, too, and now I've gotten into some of Darren Hayes' solo work (which isn't as good as Savage Garden, but some of it is still very good.)
deyterkajerbs@reddit
My brother loved them. I thought the lyrics of their “mountain” song were so dumb, I used that idea for an original song I recorded. At the time I was really into the Pixies, so it sounded like them but the words were intentionally cheesy. I called my song “Pretty Mountain”
panteragstk@reddit
My mom loved them.
Not me.

I always think this is Roxette, until I look it up. 😆
Deep_Excitement1192@reddit
Really? I thought liking SG was cool?
Ph4ntorn@reddit
I was not ashamed for a second. I figured it was much cooler to be into two talented musicians who met over a shared love of Michael Jackson and named their band after a line from an Ann Rice book than some manufactured boy band.
Now if I’d gone and bought the cologne that their touring bass player wore because I thought he smelled nice, that would have been weird.
epidemicsaints@reddit
When I first heard this I thought it was Roxette.
heresmytwopence@reddit
I think I thought the same. Strong The Look vibes.
RogerMiller6@reddit
Heard ‘The Look’ in the grocery store yesterday… it took literally every bit of self control I had not to bust out ‘Na na na na na! Na na na na na na na! Na na na na na na nah! Na na na na naaah nah… Na na na na na nah naaah!’ at the top of my lungs in the frozen aisle.

I was invited to a Savage Garden concert at Red Rocks in CO. I had never heard of them before but went anyways. They weren't bad, never on my playlist, but not bad.
Aggressive-Host5799@reddit
When Chris Cornell died, I was super sad and my mom called me and said, "OH, it's so sad. I love his song " I knew I Loved you Before I Met You." I had to explain to her that he was in Soundgarden and not Savage Garden.
But I liked Savage Garden too.
GenJohnnyRico@reddit
Hahaha, I came into this thread to make a comment about Black Hole Sun but your comment was the first at top and made me realize I made the same mistake as your mom.
L181G@reddit
Now I'm imagining Chris Cornell doing a cover of "I Knew I Loved You."
seafox77@reddit
That was a bit of 90s culture I loathed; having to hide your music from friends because it wasn't cool. And that could change between cliques. It was exhausting.
Fortunately most of us grew up about it by the early 00s I think.
