Perhaps the most beautiful jet bomber but alas not the best.

The XB-35 is the most beautiful bomber and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise
JaggedMetalOs@reddit
Surely the YB-49 version is better!
KeeganY_SR-UVB76@reddit
No. Props are sexy and the vertical stabs ruin the 49’s look.

Dunno, the XB-35 never self immolated in an accidental cobra.

Convair had some good weed back in the day

I think every aircraft manufacturer had some strong drugs in the 40s and 50s
Diogenes256@reddit
I bet this thing needed quite a bit of runway.
CyberSoldat21@reddit
Some rockets could have helped too
Viharabiliben@reddit
Just add a few more engines.

A little surprising that this plane did not get picked up as a recon platform.I guess there were already planes to fill that role in service. But she looks like a natural for that.

Yes, they had plenty. The XB-46 was competing for a reconnaissance bomber contract which was essentially, "hey, give us the bomb load and range of a B-17 but with jets!" The Air Force split the contact in two essentially with two four engine designs vs two six engine designs. Then they'd pick the better of two for larger orders. The B-45 was more traditional, but it didn't hold a candle to the B-47. So in the end, the B-47 won the competition.

I love the early jet age bomber designs. "Where do the multiple engines go?" "I don't know. Let's try this and see..."
KerPop42@reddit
It has my nose!
KerPop42@reddit
What if you had a narrow as fuck fuselage but wing planform said "no"
KerPop42@reddit
This plane is the perfect counter to the assumption that the B-47 looked like that because jets are inherently cool-looking
