Just shoot them down already. Turkey proved that all you need to do is slap russians down and they’ll stop provoking your country.
Planeandaquariumgeek@reddit
Poland shot them all down. Seems like POOtin has completely lost his shit
There_Are_No_Gods@reddit
We should be well past even that. Shooting down drones is still a weak response, especially from the perspective of those such as Putin.
To present a stance Putin will take seriously, track them back to the source and blow up the launch site, armory, or airfield they're coming from.
If someone was mugging you and started shooting bullets at you despite you never even doing anything aggressive to them, would you be happy to just put on some armor plates and hope you stop most of their bullets, or somehow knock down most of the bullets on their way to you? Or would you be fully in your rights to return fire at the source and neutralize the violent assailant attempting to murder you?
Snark_Connoisseur@reddit
If somebody was shooting bullets at me I'd be running away and happy if I made it out alive. I get what you're saying but the analogy is bad.
There_Are_No_Gods@reddit
I concur that it's not a great analogy. I also understand at a personal level that "fight" and "flight" are both common practices.
At a nation state level, though, "flight" isn't really a practical option.
Snark_Connoisseur@reddit
Yes 100% they should shut it down hard. In the book Enders Game the main character, Ender, is attacked at school by his bully. Ender is 6 or 7 at the time, but when he defends himself, he kicks the bully Stilson in the chest, and when Stilson falls falls down Ender kicks him in the groin, ribs, and head until he knows Stilson won't get up again. Ender doesn't know it, but he has killed Stilson. When asked later why he didn't stop after the first kick and knocking him down Ender says it was because he had to win all the fights, not just that fight. He knew that if he didn't beat Stilson's ass hard enough that Stilson would keep bullying him and he'd have to fight him every day. He decided that if he wanted to not have to fight Stilson every day then he better stomp the everloving shit out of him today so Stilson wouldn't dare to fight him tomorrow or any other day.
Russia is Stilson.

Hi Redditor. States are actually not like individual people. Real life is actually not like a fiction novel. No, you should not go higher up on the escalation ladder in a conflict between nuclear powers. No, a state cannot be compared to a "bully." Hope this helps.
nostrademons@reddit
Note also that Ender’s Game is about a genocide and the subsequent trilogy is about Ender living with that guilt.
IncomingAxofKindness@reddit
Such an awesome series. Enders Shadow series as well.

Keep in mind Endor's Game is make believe, it's always better to cite real examples for real problems.

Unfortunately, Geopolitics is a lot more complicated than that. You've "blown up the launch site" that happens to be in Russia. Guess what? You've just brought the world to the brink of Nuclear War. Congratulations
New-Doctor9300@reddit
We've crossed roughly 30 red-lines that Putin said he would nuke us for. And would you look at that, we are still here, un-nuked.
Retirednypd@reddit
Sadly, I think that's where we are headed. Putin hasn't been backed into a corner yet. Maybe that's exactly why nato is proceeding cautiously. If we ont stip putting he takes Ukraine and beyond. If we do, he uses nukes, with the support of China, n Korea, India, iran
SM_83@reddit
I think blowing up a site in Russian territory would constitute a red line too far, wouldn't you?
New-Doctor9300@reddit
After Russia has organised direct attacks on our infrastructure, hacked our IT systems, killed people on our soil and is now purposefully violating airspaces?
There_Are_No_Gods@reddit
Nope
Spiffy_Dude@reddit
You mean Russia brought us to the brink of nuclear war. Literally none of this happens unless Russia starts it. So they’re allowed to fly around and endanger citizens of my country, but if I respond, suddenly I’m at fault?
Get out of here Ivan.
SM_83@reddit
At what point in that did you decide I'm an "Ivan" and supporting Russia's actions?
Pardon me for pointing out that OP's suggestion might trigger Armageddon. Reddit...
Spiffy_Dude@reddit
It’s probably the number one Russian talking point on the internet. You can’t do anything to Russia because you will cause nuclear war. They’ve been using it for years to scare anybody away from directly helping Ukraine.
There’s no way that you don’t know this, so don’t play.
There_Are_No_Gods@reddit
Continuing to submit and cower to a bully only encourages the bully to become more aggressive. Nukes or not, when attacked intentionally by armed drones, fighting back in a way the aggressor will actually perceive as fighting back from a position of strength becomes necessary.
Nokomis34@reddit
I credit my commanders in Iraq for saving lives by taking this approach. We used to take incoming mortars almost every day. At most we'd send a team to where the mortars were shot from. We changed tactics to just counter fire. For every one mortar they sent into our base, we'd send three back to where they were shot from. Before we left it had been months without incoming mortars.
ObiShaneKenobi@reddit
We more than slapped them at Deir al-Zour, it’s going to take much more than that to end the Cold War.
kuvetof@reddit
That's incorrect. Turkey downed a Russian jet years ago and shortly after bought the S400. Turkey is playing on both sides. Hence why there are voices in NATO that are calling for Turkey's expulsion from the alliance
Chogo82@reddit
It’s not worth the cost. Don’t forget before drone warfare was a thing, Russian jets regularly infringed on EU and US air space and they would scramble jets to escort them out. This isn’t any different and simply testing defense and detection capabilities. Shooting the drones down would inevitably cost more and an economic war of attrition is exactly what Russ would want now that they have the backing of Chinese manufacturing.
Odd_Blood5625@reddit
They probably want to recover then to get any data they can off them.
McRibs2024@reddit
They’re testing Trump reactions.
They regularly mess with airspace to see response times and launch locations but imo these incursions are specifically to see how
A) NATO nations respond and prep
B) testing trumps role and influence on the alliance
Dude_I_got_a_DWAVE@reddit
No. It’s deeper than that. They want to make NATO keep critical air Defense in Europe by sowing fear in the public
This is a tactic called Reflexive Control
seefatchai@reddit
Quite clever
SouthernWindyTimes@reddit
This completely. Will Trump go full in on the US and seize for example the Charlie Kirk situation and the wins in SCOTUS and crank it, or will it be more a WWIII situation, or is it both. Maybe this is in part with escalation of tensions in America. All it takes it martial law in the United States for a valid reason like a high scale thing at some point, then boom we can’t fulfill NATO. Saw UK leading immigration protests. So sounds like maybe it’s even go UK/US as neutral parties dealing with civil unrest as EU/Russia. Then of course China/Taiwan especially with their new aircraft carrier just released.
AbstractWarrior23@reddit
probably wears down some of the sentiment of NATO nations too. If Russia just straight up attacked one of these places there'd be outrage. But do these dumb little drone fly bys. Let them shot down your drones. Gather intel. Put out some bullshit that romania is now flying drones over russian air space blah blah
TheAdvocate@reddit
Kinda like sending in the national guard for yard work so people get used to seeing troops on every corner.

Right now Russia and Ukraine are attacking each other’s energy infrastructure. Especially with winter coming it’s going to be critical to determine the outcome of the war. When Russia invades sovereign airspace the countries will keep their anti-air platforms at home to protect their own airspace. That means less will be shipped to Ukraine to defend themselves.
strings___@reddit
Somebody should tell him the drones are left wing drones.
New-Doctor9300@reddit

Get ready for them to play the victim card when there's eventually a response.
And for it to work well enough, because political rationalizations are just kayfabe anyway.
ReasonablePossum_@reddit
There was a "leak" around tlgrm channels of some random french map with polish, romanian, french , and uk forces deployment in ukraine.
Kimda seems that these incursions are russkies showing the range of their drones. As from what Ive seen, they are sending unarmed drones

Russia can't even win in Ukraine. What r they going to do against NATO?
dothebananasplits96@reddit
They gave the support of China, North Korea and India currently. They may also get the support of America if Trump feels like it so you know....
nickMakesDIY@reddit
Oh no, china and India? Get real. Maybe China after a few years, but nowhere even close right now....

I try to keep in mind that a critical thing that needs to happen for Putin to meet his end goal is for the US to pull out of NATO. The way to do that is to destabilize the US as much as possible. And the way to do that is to enable and support a regime that will hollow out all of our institutions and pit us against each other so we’re too compromised to put up a fight.
It doesn’t really matter *what* kind of regime it is. If a Buddhist regime or a pro-Alanis-Morrissette regime would cause enough chaos to collapse the place, they’d focus on enabling that one. They pick the one that is most likely to mess a place up based on its existing weaknesses. In the US, it’s racism and religious fundamentalism, which should come as no surprise given that the country was founded by religious fundamentalists and had a civil war over racism. The fact that the people using racism and fundamentalism against us are racist fundamentalists themselves is a bonus. It makes it easier because everybody’s speaking the same language, and it helps speed things up because the people you've installed share your beliefs and are actively pulling for you.
I try to keep this in mind when big domestic things happen. What does it mean that Elon is Dogeing? Oh my God, everyone is being deported and our own military is invading us. What is a groyper? The answer to each specific question is interesting and worth knowing. But one big answer that applies to everything that is happening is “This is what it looks like when you install a bunch of Christian Nationalists and help them gain absolute power. The entire country falls apart and outside interests get to do what they want.”
This helps keep me from getting hung up on the details and worn out trying to analyze each event. Is the destabilization of my country proceeding apace? Yes. It sure is.
I have thought for a very long time that, while domestic forces in the US jockey for power, what Putin is waiting for is for the US to pull out of NATO. I have also thought that, once they get that done, it’s curtains for Trump. Since 2015, I’ve thought that’s what Trump was put here to do. I know I link this thing all the time, but I’m going to link it again. It explains what I think is behind so much of what’s happening lately. Putin told us exactly what he was going to do, and by God is he doing it.
