Single male, cheap hobbies, going out just for some beer - no fancy meals.

Fellow single male, 300k house (sister as lodger), you'll be fine. It was very easy when I was earning close to 70k - having taken a career pivot to a job currently probably targeting 50k a year with OTE and i'm comfortable on the 35k basic.,

You can get a 3 bed semi for £1500pm. Factor in £1kpm for other household bits like tax insurance water etc
Public transports a bit hit and miss so a car can help, loads of places to get work done cheap, say £500pm for that
So £36kpa will have you living comfortably and financially safely in MK.

But that is after tax (so would be about 45k pre tax without pension etc), and what about food or any other life costs that are not bills?

OP hasn’t said that, so I went of off the information provided

My mortgage is £500 a month! Granted, it's not a house that's as big as that but the thought of pay 1k more a month makes me wince

Renting sucks, leaves you in a pickle of not being able to save as the rent is so high, it’s what the corporate overlords want I guess.
I’m very lucky that I met my partner who already had a house, mortgage is cheap so it means we can have nice things and go on holidays, but my days of renting leaves me feeling empathetic for those stuck in a rut who want out of renting. Without the help of a rich family member or a lottery win some will never get out.

There is the option of shared ownership. It has its downfalls but it's a great way for people who are single or on a lower income to get on the ladder.

One of my neighbours has one of those, says it’s great.

You can afford a shared apartment and a small car. If you don’t eat out often you can still save £1000 per month

Yes, absolutely. Loads of people make do with much less.

Of course, but it depends what your actual living situation is, rents can vary quite a lot.
