I have video. I want a text to read.

How is Firefox getting worse? Curious, it's my default browser.
tapo@reddit
Google lost an antitrust case and can no longer pay other browser manufacturers to be the default search engine. This kills about 90% of Mozilla's revenue.
They need to enshittify it to stay alive now.
Your donations don't go to fund browser development, they go to a separate legal entity and are used for web advocacy.

Deal is staying in place, but that said, they still need to find more channels and not depend on Google...

Based on the video, they want to add ai and ad related features, and they are dropping 32bit support.
Based on my experience it's still something like that, they keep adding shit like ai, sidebars, and shit that already had better versions in the form of extensions like vertical tabs and whatnot. They are really really good at wasteing that sweet google money, we now have a list of shit like this that can be added by anyone with a beginner level javascript knowledge, and features that need actual developers with knowledge like adding hdr or view transitions get mostly ignored. Firefox is around 7 years behind chrome already, and when the community asks them if they are planning to do some actual development or if they just want to continue with their million dollar anti-cyberbully summit, they just add a random reskin from r/firefoxcss

They're adding more ads (like news on the start page) and AI features. Most of them are optional and non-intrusive, but mozilla tends to like using on-device models (for obvious privacy benefits) which could constitute bloat, especially after the one responsible for smart tab groups caused many users' CPUs to spin up due to a bug (now fixed). If you're not concerned about these, then it's not getting worse. If you're really concerned about complete privacy, zero telemetry, minimal and lightweight experience etc. you might want to consider a fork of some kind.

Question is what that means for the Fedora?
6tBF4Cg4qqAAZA@reddit
Most of Fedora developers work for Red Hat.
carlwgeorge@reddit
It's more like 40% according to the previous project leader, so a big chunk but not a majority. Also many of those have roles that have nothing to do with Fedora, and participate in Fedora in their spare time because they want to. I don't think it makes sense to discount them as "not community" just because of their employer.
I am one of the lucky few who works at Red Hat in a role that directly involves Fedora (EPEL), but I contributed to Fedora before I got hired, and intend to continue contributing after I leave. Am I not part of the community because of who I currently work for?
6tBF4Cg4qqAAZA@reddit
Fair point.
brut4r@reddit
That is the reason of my question. Time to distro hop or not?
6tBF4Cg4qqAAZA@reddit
If it works for you, why would you switch?
natermer@reddit
Do you let things that only exist in your imagination and may or may not happen in the distant future control what you do now?
Fedora is fine. There is no reason to believe it isn't.
And if in 5 or 10 years it turns out not to be great then you can switch then. It isn't like switching distros is something that is particularly hard or even that meaningful.
natermer@reddit
Nonsense.
stupid-computer@reddit
This means nothing for Fedora. in fact this means nothing for anyone besides some HR and Finance teams within Red Hat.
No_Rhubarb_7222@reddit
Ugh. This is based on a Register article reporting that back-end functions like Finance, Legal, and HR teams are being moved into IBM. On a Reddit thread, one person, assumably a Red Hatter, complained about how they thought the culture was dead.
Realize that Red Hat is a company of about 20,000 and I, personally, have experience where different departments or teams operate with different levels of interest and dedication to maintaining the company culture Red Hat is generally known for. Making sweeping statements off of a few people grousing on Reddit is… poor. Though I would expect nothing less of the Internet, where if you can read it, it must be true, right?
Odd-Possession-4276@reddit
The Register is a tabloid. Sensationalizing for entertainment value is on-brand.
carlwgeorge@reddit
Go ahead and throw Linux Experiment in the same bucket, since they're so willing to spend the Register's drivel for clicks.
natermer@reddit
It is a tabloid, it is also better then the vast majority of "tech journalism" out there.
Also IBM is ran by incompetents. It is unfortunate that Redhat is connected to that boat anchor.
We can only hope that once all this AI nonsense collapses and takes out a major portion of what is left of their business that investors have the wisdom to spin Redhat off into its own business again.

An article would've been nice. Not just a fan of sitting and watching something passively on this platform.
