To be completely fair, I've seen the non-Linux audio tools and plugins names and they aren't much better.
It's either "descriptive, but boring and forgettable" ("hall reverb alpha mk4") or random words based on vibes (and possibly substances), like "the quantum discombobulator v3.5, aqua edition"
randomdestructn@reddit
or non-descriptive to the point of uselessness. Like 'Windows App' which recently replaced remote desktop.
elsjpq@reddit
I hate the people that name their things something completely ungoogleable.
ungoogleable@reddit
Yeah I hate it when people pick ungoogleable names.
DuendeInexistente@reddit
The worst is when it's a game where the name or gameplay includes a common word related to bugs or troubleshooting. Like imagine trying to debug a name named something like Crash to Desktop
DuendeInexistente@reddit
Linux distros had a worse trend for a few years that thinking about it seems to have died now, where they'd replace application names with their basic description, so you'd look up kate and you'd have like five or ten applications named "Text editor" with the same icon.
Impressive_Change593@reddit
fortunately the old remote desktop still works, and if you had the new remote desktop then that still works.
the windows app cannot be used for remote desktop on windows for some stupid reason.
randomdestructn@reddit
hah right. i forgot the degree of mess they created.
It's like Teams, Teams (classic), Teams (new).
It's incredible how bad Microsoft is at naming product lately.
arahman81@reddit
Lately?MS had already shat the carpet at naming the Xbox successor.
vim_deezel@reddit
I don't like the name but for me RDP is so much smoother than VNC on the same machine, even over local network.
techno156@reddit
Or just outright bewildering.
Microsoft Copilot 365, not to be confused with Microsoft 365, formerly known as Microsoft Office.
Irverter@reddit
There's a plugin called "Sausage Fattener"
torsten_dev@reddit
but I want a quantum discombobulated guitar track.
renatoram@reddit
Probably some Ambient reverb pedal with weird signal manipulation and infinite sustain for layering, amirite?
Unless it's some really bizarre modular synth module, then all bets are off.
torsten_dev@reddit
Some mp3 data moshing effect maybe.
Francois-C@reddit
Can I use the Calf plugin pack with the Deadbeef audio player?
youlikemoneytoo@reddit
you can probably load Calf into Reaper and record something and export it and play in deadbeef
fellowsnaketeaser@reddit
They are not sold, so who cares? No need for any marketing.
mark-haus@reddit
I'd argue some consideration of marketing is important. If we want to be in a world not suffocated by tech monopolies, some consideration about discovery, and user experience matters.
vim_deezel@reddit
The more users the better usually, more resources, more chance for donations and corp sponsorship. But being edgy is more important
lykwydchykyn@reddit
Exactly. Projects are not Products.
keremdev@reddit (OP)
I personally find it funny and don't really mind it. However I would say it's harder to tell someone to use "GIMP" instead of "Photoshop" purely based on the name :D
fellowsnaketeaser@reddit
Yeah, maybe they should just go for GNU-IMP or something alike.
someweirdbanana@reddit
Wait till you hear about the famous linux gnu image manipulation program.
mark-haus@reddit
And if you're into pixel art or sprite design, LibreSprite.
keremdev@reddit (OP)
it's the open source way :D
whizzwr@reddit
but Calf is much more "safe" name than GIMP lol. Also baby cows are cute.
amarao_san@reddit
Gimp and git.
Also, don't forget that Linux allows parents to kill children.
whizzwr@reddit
What's wrong with got? I'm not a native English speaker. Git good? 😂
amarao_san@reddit
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Git
someweirdbanana@reddit
As it should be, lol.
forumcontributer@reddit
Wait till you hear about, GNU's Not Unix image manipulation program tool kit.
vim_deezel@reddit
They could have called it Imp but nah, we gotta be edge lords lol
enderfx@reddit
Wait till you hear about, GNU’s Not Unix’s Not Unix image manipulation program tool kit.
amarao_san@reddit
Why GNU’s Not Unix’s Not Unix is not Unix?
El_Croc@reddit

ChocolateSpecific263@reddit

MedicalITCCU@reddit
The Gimp's sleeping.
Ignore_User_Name@reddit
Well, I guess you're gonna have to go wake him up now.. these images are not gonna process themselves
ChocolateDonut36@reddit
have you heard about the "wine is not an emulator“ proram?
6gv5@reddit
Not to mention the Yabridge tool that turns Windows VST plugins into libraries (.dll -> .so) that can be directly loaded by Linux native music software.
spyingwind@reddit
WINE Is Not An Emulator
IMO, recursive names are the best.
dovahshy15@reddit
X Not Unix
Charming-Designer944@reddit
GNU is Not Unix.
someweirdbanana@reddit
PHP Hypertext Processor
crb3@reddit
aka "Perl but Hold the Punctuation"
bobj33@reddit
GNU Hurd
GNU is Not Unix Hird of Unix Replacing Daemons
And, then, "Hird" stands for "Hurd of Interfaces Representing Depth".
IDatedSuccubi@reddit
Is is nothing compared to Rear Orfice. Go ahead and look up the logo as well
lifttruckoperator@reddit
Can't forget NESticle either.
cutchyacokov@reddit
As bad as a lot of FOSS names are I would take them any day over Microsoft's fucking program names.
Irverter@reddit
But who doesnt like Microsoft Entra 365 Azure Copilot for Business?
cutchyacokov@reddit
Hello fellow sysadmin. We're in this together.
HalfManHalfWaffle@reddit
Naming things is hard. Do you go for descriptive but boring and/or long? Or do you go for something interesting, but abstract?
mrtruthiness@reddit
Right. Like the name change from "xdg-app" to "flatpak".
keremdev@reddit (OP)
IMO GNOME strikes a good balance: https://developer.gnome.org/hig/guidelines/app-naming.html
Whether if it's fun or not is another discussion though.
sparkymcalister@reddit
Or names like audlibshg64
elsjpq@reddit
I like it that way. A rare taste of the old internet in the bland corporate sanitized world.
AtmosphereLow9678@reddit
My favorite love linux programs are Konsole Kcalc Kompare Kapman The naming scheme is really good tho
crazedizzled@reddit
Never understood why they didn't just go with Kalc
Xxgamer64xX5203@reddit
KmyMoney
calling_kyle@reddit
AND icons like 2011 iPhone mobile game.
vexatious-big@reddit
Unrelated to audio, there's also the rp-pppoe package, i.e. Roaring Penguin PPPoE
https://docs.redhat.com/en/documentation/red_hat_enterprise_linux/6/html/6.6_technical_notes/rp-pppoe
lucasio099@reddit
gstreamer-plugins-bad and gstreamer-plugins-good will always have a special place in my heart
LaundryMan2008@reddit
Well, I’m not Jack so it’s not for me but my crush is called Jack so it’s for him
DazzlingAd4254@reddit
Select the reverb effect on the calf plugin pack for jack and play 'My friend Jack':
PhroznGaming@reddit
Huh
veelasama2@reddit

dr_rox@reddit
Dairy multiteat compressor :)
DazzlingAd4254@reddit
It must taken much scheming to name a LISP dialect the GNU Ubiquitous Intelligent Language for Extension. So much (guile) in a name.
ClashOrCrashman@reddit
FOSS is all AWFL (Acronyms With Four Letters).
Maticzpl@reddit
calfjackhost my beloved
