I usually read the Associated press news app. I thought it was fair and sort of middle of the road. I am having more and more trouble even reading the news. It makes me anxious and angry. I usually just take a break from time to time when it becomes to much. What do you use for news and is it also bothering you? Please share where you get your news reports. Thanks.
Lopsided_Elk_1914@reddit
i've started using Ground News. i like the way it tells the news outlets bias at the top of the article, or whether it has a bias. it also has news called the blindspot (i think) that i haven't seen anywhere else. so much is happening at once, i'd been trying this.
ALittleEtomidate@reddit
I generally read Reuters. It’s scored highly for just reporting facts and not doing a ton of leading to conclusions.
Super anxious. Shit is not good right now.
FormerNeighborhood80@reddit
I read that Reuters was reliable. I will try that one. Absolutely not good now. It makes me anxious and yet things are happening so fast I feel as if I can’t miss it. The edge is razor thin right now. Working on my preps helps.
doyletyree@reddit
Reuters and AP are considered dual gold-standard for low bias.
Things are just wild at the moment.

I've also started noticing gaps in some products, but what products seems to rotate. 2 weeks ago, there was basically no water on the shelves (gallon or multipack), but plenty of bread. Last week, basically no bread on the shelves, but plenty of water. This week, water and bread both seem fine but all of the coffee creamer was gone. I'm sure next week the juice shelf or cream cheese will be empty.

The store I went to yesterday had many empty shelves too. However, it is a smaller store.
pile_of_fish@reddit
A question - did the stores staffing level seem appropriate? Im wondering if some stock issues reflect chaos and disruption in the labor pool.
Vegetable_Ad_7703@reddit
It was a Trader Joe's so there were lots of workers. It very well could just have been a busy suburban weekend but I go there semi regularly and hadn't seen that many empty spaces since 2020.
pile_of_fish@reddit
Yeah, that definitely sounds like supply chain issues more than labor. Thanks!

My store was out of taco seasoning today. Also a weird fucking thing to be out of.
Lunchbreak-Samples@reddit
My Costco has removed half of the shelves in its health/beauty section due to supply issues. Other places in the store have put multiple pallets of the same product side by side to hide where gaps would be. People are being told that Costco is trying to avoid buying products from outside the country including produce. Foreign produce stock is very very low.

North AL here and one of my jobs is at a bookstore. Lately I have noticed more people are using cash for purchases and we definitely have an influx of customers as well. This summer was very very slow at the bookstore with very minimal traffic.
Now it seems we are ramping up ahead of the uptick for the holiday season, especially on the weekends.
People are interested in the store membership but I mostly hear the same thing, it’s not pay week or maybe next paycheck if they have extra. Most people explain they are in a tight spot financially, which is totally understandable!
I do see some people get stressed out over the cost of books, either they don’t check the price before hand or they don’t realize how much paper etc has gone up either. So I do feel like a lot of people are coming to check out, not thinking about the price so they want to put a few books back instead of the whole purchase.

NoTerm3078@reddit
It's observation, not participation, from USA. India has chosen to participate with Zapad which is entirely different.
melympia@reddit
It's not participation yet. And considering some shenanigans from earlier this year - rendering certain weapons unusable, taking starlink down for Ukraine, blaming Zelensky for the war... I think that it's only a matter of time.
AndersDreth@reddit
I live in a humid climate, I was thinking about hooking up a portable dehumidifier up to a Bluetti powered by solar energy, then either getting an appliance to boil the water caught by the dehumidifiers or a lifestraw if I need to conserve power.
I was just thinking about ways to get access to drinkable water and I think this might be a good solution for the climate I live in.
JovialKatherine@reddit
Depending on weather and geography, you might be better served with a solar powered well and water storage, or collecting rainwater.
That said, what you described is basically moisture farming from Star Wars. It's doable, but probably not the best option for your climate.
torquil@reddit
You might want to search about this - I think there have been post on r/preppers re: drinking water from dehumidifiers, and as I recall, it was very much not recommended...even after filtering. Whether the lifestraw would be enough, I don't know.
AndersDreth@reddit
I'm also not certain, that's why I would boil the water under normal circumstances, it's just that I'd have to also consider what to do in case I can't power the boiler.
Over_Technology_1707@reddit
If you can find a way to put the water in a shallow large tray, and let it get sunlight (you said humid environment so I am picturing tropics or subtropics where the UVI is high) that will disinfect the water.
Of course cover it with plastic wrap or something so birds don't poop in it.
AndersDreth@reddit
I'm actually in a temperate climate, but the maximum length to the nearest coast in my country is 32 miles which is what causes the high humidity.
Over_Technology_1707@reddit
As long as it reaches above 5 for a few hours, and you treat it for a few days, it will be bacteriocidal. It won't make poop water drinkable, but river water, sure.
AndersDreth@reddit
Unfortunately it very rarely reaches 5 or above, that only happens on peak summer days. I live in Northern Europe.
But you've made me think about the importance of being able to use the environment to boil the water, so if nothing else I should at least look into ways to start fires without consuming too much fuel.
Over_Technology_1707@reddit
Id just get some iodine drops/bleach tablets and a few hanging particle filters. That will get you set 100%
AndersDreth@reddit
I did a little more digging around and came across this solar cooker which can apparently reach upwards of 288C (550F) degrees which is actually insane. Think I'll pick that up as it can both detoxify water and cook food all without relying on consumables.
AndersDreth@reddit
I'll look into that, thanks for the advice!
mistegirl@reddit
Shot in the dark here, but are there any other people in right wing states looking to relocate somewhere a bit more aligned to their beliefs - and if so where are you looking?
I've been in a small rural town in the TX panhandle for 6 years, where I can honestly say liberals are maybe 1 in 1,000 people. I've always just kept my head down and made it very clear to everyone that I don't talk politics and it's been ok. With all the talk going on these days though, I'm feeling a LOT less safe around here. Like, almost scared.
Add to that the fact that this is a VERY dry area not great for growing things or hunting even, I'm thinking I need to head back up north soon. Issue is though that I make about $40k a year and have shit credit, so an actual city is probably out of the question (and not really preferred anyway).
I know someone that lives in MN just east of Fargo and it looks affordable, left friendly and with resources, but I'd like to find some other areas to look into, maybe with less tornados and blizzards, though I know how to handle both of em.
So, anyone else in this situation and where are you eyeing up?

Local "news" Facebook group is getting a bit.. hostile. You know the type, right? Lots of old folks, posting somewhere between "The democrats are evil," "no one fixes the roads!," "there's too much construction in town!" and "there's an ambulance and two police cars on 7th Street at the red house, anyone know what's going on!?" General waste of bits and bytes, but I follow to keep a pulse on the underbelly of our community.
Charlie Kirk ghost has invaded now. The Group Admin) posted 4-5 Charlie Kirk things (in memory of, look a million people marching in London for Charlie Kirk, etc.). Cool, whatever. Then a local food truck guy posted on his own page "One down, many more to go" and the knives came out. Ban him! Shame him! Many not nice words, but I guess that's the price of being a public figure and posting things? Oh, it gets better...
The very next post is the Group admin asking for all members to rat out anyone they see celebrating his death. The first 5-6 replies are people who posted things ranging from "good shot" to "Why didn't they riot like this when MN politicians killed?" to Charlie didn't deserve to die, but I didn't like him, etc.. The next few posts are "Such and such said this at work" with a picture of their profile (but no actual post). They're literally name dropping people and claiming they said something somewhere... the group is eating it up, calling for the FBI to take people out, etc.
Temperature is rising...hopefully it cools down soon.

the thing that's disturbing me the most is on FB they're trying to paint Kirk as a devout Christian who was spreading the word of God as his ministry. my goodness, the man was a bigot who promoted hate and cruelty on a regular basis.
Straight_Ace@reddit
Yeah nothing says “true Christian” like spreading the idea that empathy is a fucking sin. Empathy is such a wonderful thing, it’s only a danger to those who lack it
Lopsided_Elk_1914@reddit
empathy is literally a fruit of the Holy Spirit, if Kirk had been who they say he was, he would've embraced empathy, not demonized it.
thisbliss7@reddit
Which Bible translation are you reading? Because I have never seen empathy listed as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Lopsided_Elk_1914@reddit
we are told to emulate Christ. when Christ wept at the tomb of Lazarus, was it because He was upset that Lazarus was dead? no. Jesus wept because He had compassion, He had empathy for Mary and Martha and their grief that their brother had died. He shared their grief.
you don't have to specifically be told in the Bible that empathy is a fruit of the Spirit when Jesus Himself gave us the Holiest of examples of it.
instead of mocking someone for having a tender heart, we should share the example of Christ and aspire to it.
Equivalent-Buyer-841@reddit

Conscious_Ad8133@reddit
So many folks around me locally, at work, online & IRL are short tempered or hostile. People who previously would approach a challenging situation with curiosity, patience and an attempt at defusing seem to instead be itching for a fight. I have to actively resist the same urge myself.
I can’t speak of others’ motivations, but for me, I chalk this up in part to anxiety about my increasingly challenging financial situation. I’m dealing with persistent COL increases without a salary increase. The company has done yet another round of layoffs and an early retirement program while the job market is in the dumpster. When will it be my head on the block? Will I ever get another job paying this level again? Will I get another job at all?
FormerNeighborhood80@reddit
I am feeling all the same things but I know it won’t always be this way. I’m keeping busy with my own stuff, limiting any online apps except this particular one. I'm not who you're asking, but I've noticed a similar trend in my location. It started during covid and has been steadily getting worse as the economy worsens.
RamonaLittle@reddit
Covid literally causes brain damage, so presumably that's a big part of it. Which is not to dispute that people are also upset and worried about the economy and other things.
2quickdraw@reddit
I'm not 100% sure of this because I've had covid twice now because of somebody else being intentionally careless and incautious, so my cognition is definitely impacted. But I think it was in 2021 that scientists first raised the alarm about the huge impact of covid-19 on the vascular system and the neurological impacts, one of which was brain damage and reduced cognition. They were concerned that within the span of three or four years the general population would have huge numbers of people unable to work because of brain damage to the frontal cortex and other areas of the brain. So people would be dumber and not able to hold their jobs, and have less filters which is exactly where we are right now. Their concern was how the government was going to be able to deal with 30% or 40% or more of the population unable to work and needing to be on disability. Well now we know how the government is dealing with it, through forced poverty, shortages, inability to get necessary medical care and medications, and homelessness so that the unproductive "useless eaters" can be rounded up and sent to work and death camps, or be turned into biochar.

There’s a fairly substantial covid wave going around at the moment disguised as the flu. There’s been a few outbreaks again since lockdown ended.

The pandemic is NOT over. Amost everyone I know who has at minimum a BA degree has lost language and writing depth. MBAs who can no longer structure a paragraph properly and have poor punctuation. They don't talk about it. I have an increased difficulty with word finding and I see it in people younger than I am. I have BAs in Art and English. I look at stuff I wrote 10 years ago and it makes me extremely bereft. I've lost so many words. Words are such an amazing tool and art form.
thisbliss3@reddit
It started during Covid, when the 30% of Americans who chose not to take the vaccine were told that they should be fired from their jobs and denied any medical care unless they complied. Once you realize that your fellow citizens would be happy to see you penniless and dead, it’s really hard to go back to normal.
CrazyQuiltCat@reddit
It started in Covid when 30% of Americans were happy to spread disease than be inconvenienced and stay home when sick, wash their hands, and wear masks. This was before vaccines were even available.
thisbliss3@reddit
Pulling stats out of your ass is as cute as your avatar.
I washed my hands religiously (and still do), wore a mask as instructed, and didn’t even catch Covid until Year 3, long after every vaccinated person around me had caught it at least once and often two or three times.
And yet people like you think I deserve to be out of work and denied all health care, all because I wanted to see more data before taking an experimental vaccine. Ugly.
Livid_Roof5193@reddit
Interesting. I guess maybe being separate socially during that time has had an impact on colleagues inter-personal relationships in some fields more than others. My field is full of awkward nerds who mostly do isolated work and then come together to combine everything as a team. So we had less face to face work that was done even before Covid. Covid actually didn’t change much about the way we had previously worked (just did it from home rather than the office or field), so I have not been exposed to this phenomenon in my work.
plaincheeseburger@reddit
I've wondered if it's more related to stress due to finances. Prices shot up exponentially during covid and, while wages did go up, it wasn't enough to close the gap. There has been a sharp uptick in the homeless population since then (one or two visible people has become people lining the streets near the shelter and begging on most major intersections) and we're starting to see prices rising again thanks to the tariffs. I've also noticed a drop in credit scores with the applicants to my rentals, fewer people in general moving, and more people taking out personal loans to cover gaps. With all of these stressors and the stigmatization of mental health treatment (or just the cost!), it's not surprising to me that it would come out as aggressive behavior.
Then_Ad7822@reddit
Not sure if you’re asking me, but I’ll bite. I never witness anyone talking too politically. Maybe a hint here or there, a little wink of an opinion if you squint. Compared to last weekend though (I work most weekend shifts), there is definitely a temper change.
Some people have casually mentioned the assassination, but since we’re a busy unit in a busy hospital, nobody really gets too political. Could be something they saw online, since most of the nurses follow each other. I have basically no social media, and I try to play dumb to whatever big thing is happening to avoid getting caught in work drama.

As the middle of September rears it's head this year I will share one specific thing I have prepped around last year and now.
I have mentioned in a few places over the past year or so that I had a vivid series of dreams where we had a nuclear exchange. Initially from context within the dream I believed it would take place on the 20th of (a) September at 2:30 PST but I am revising the date slightly to September 19th at 4:30 PST.
Dreams are flimsy evidence... Just consider it a good time for a practice drill if you feel so inclined! I don't mind being wrong and people are welcome to @ me when nothing happens... In that case I will be here celebrating another year with you!

We moved west because it was a dream of mine, but since the election, things have changed, and the feeling in the air is we're better off closer to family and base to my husband's employment. So we decided to sell.
Home has been on the market now three weeks with proven comps to show we aren't overpriced. In fact, we went a little low. Not a single showing.
When we arrived in Dec of 23, homes were on the market for a few hours to days at most. Our realtor now averages 94 days on the market with a competitive pricing structure. Some see 30 days with no showings. Meanwhile, back to the Midwest, homes are still selling in days.
The feeling of being stuck here gets more real by the day.

What region is the home sale slow in? Just wondering. I'm in Sacramento and ours are absolutely very slow, it's been kind of shocking to see

Relative in the housing industry in Sacramento said people are waiting on the interest rate drop. Best wishes for a successful sale
Bigtimeknitter@reddit

Im so sorry yours is struggling, too. We're in Phoenix.
SpacemanLost@reddit
Crashing job market and inability to get new jobs. General national insecurity. Wrong season for families to move. Expectation that interest rates will drop soon. Widespread News of softening housing markets.
All these things add to the market situation you are encountering.
JustNeedAnswers78@reddit
Hang in there! We had family on the west coast trying to get out. After several price reductions and two months on the market, they finally got a cash offer.
So there is hope, it just might take a few more weeks.

I’ve started receiving “reminder emails” from my bank that I have a credit card payment due in two weeks.
I’ve had this account for a decade. The payment is due on the same day, every month. I always pay on time, even early, and always pay a significant amount more than the minimum amount due.
Seems probable that many people are struggling to make their payments and the bank is reacting broadly to the situation.
Honest_Persimmon_859@reddit
I've been getting those emails too. They always come in like 2-3 weeks before payment is even due and I've never missed a payment so it's not like they need to remind me. A few times they've come in after I already paid the last month's balance off and the only balance on there is for next month's bill already. Alongside everything else I've been seeing about people falling behind in other types of debt payments and banks tightening their lending, I'm sort of just speculating that the economy isn't doing great right now and middle class people especially are probably cutting back more than a lot want to admit.
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
I've noticed that the grace period for CC payments seems to be shrinking. Like, billing period ends and you've got like less than 3 weeks to pay. But it takes a week for the billing statement to arrive (yes, I still use checks for that).
Equivalent-Buyer-841@reddit
I’m still convinced most people are maxed out, defaults are higher, to make money the companies will have to start raising the APR to 40 percent for BS reasons like people are a day late or $5 over their credit limit. And people are paying off their cards and using cash.
NoTerm3078@reddit
This is probably a setting you can turn off. I have been successful in digging in and turning these off in some cases. Like you, I have had the same CCs for literal decades which are set on autopay in full each month and reminder emails are unnecessary.
A second thing I have done is straight unsub from any email I receive that I deem not 100% necessary. This is a result of being inundated by notifications & emails. Less distractions = better mental health, this is indirectly related to prepping.
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
Absolutely agree about the emails! They are out of control.
Every company I’ve ever done business with is suddenly spamming my email, trying to drum up business. I get it, but it’s overwhelming. No thanks.

Yes, keywords 'every company I've ever done business with.' Including companies from which I ordered a single item, many years ago. Usually these arrive with a 'we've updated our mailing list and wanted to make sure you weren't left out.' No, you are working your backlist. I am a backlist customer who hasn't placed an order in 8 years.

Gas went up by over 65 cents a gallon in the last week. I really wish I would have filled my spare fuel storage when it was low.
Sk8rToon@reddit
I’ve been wondering if I need to buy a locking gas cap. I used to have one when I lived in a bad part of town. Pain in the butt but I never lost any.
This-Masterpiece2341@reddit
A locking gas cap is mandatory in my opinion. Your town may be safe - but where you have to drive may not always be. Plus, siphoning is only 50% of the worry for me - people are nuts and will just put stuff in there. It was 20+ years ago but my old f150 got some sugar (from an ex) and dropping the tank/replacing injectors and flushing the lines made me swear that if my gas cover doesn’t lock, the cap will.
Specialist-Volume764@reddit
A lot of newer cars don't have gas caps. Add a funnel to your preps so you can pry the capless system open if you need to siphon.

What about diesel?
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
Diesel is probably going to go up, regardless. It's almost harvest time for soybeans and corn. Ag machinery takes a shit ton of diesel. Especially if corn harvesters are getting it out early and plan on drying it in their silos.

An update for PrepRadar
We performed pretty poorly this week. We really struggled to identify when multiple news articles were talking about the same event. Super easy to do in real life, but the setup I was using in our code was terrible to put it simply.
Big learning point for me. As of an hour ago I rolled out a change to have this done through a large language model and I'm hoping this will get us much better coverage moving forward.
Apologies to everyone using the platform, the news this week was the first real stress test and I didn't have things where they needed to be. A few late nights since then, and fingers crossed its much better moving forward.
Thank you to everyone who has stuck with me!

Any recommendations for water storage? I have been trying to purchase Waterbrick but their website never wants to work. I thought the stacking would be useful.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
"WaterBob" for bathtub
Concrete / ferro-cement cistern / in ground tank sized based on where you live.
A stock of filters leveled from coarse to fine with the plumbing to use them.
A better gray water setup to use the slightly dirty water if needed.
Rainwater collection system.
Excuse for a Pond pool or hot tub.
Depending on area, a plan to use wells and rivers that are close, with way to transport water (like two 275 totes)
As far as storing water... isn't a real good idea en mass drinking water wise... bit dangerous and cumbersome depending on your situation.
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
If you are the kind to either can produce or drink soda, you could use either mason jars or soda bottles once you've finished the beverage.
2quickdraw@reddit
If you have a tub test the drain plug. If it doesn't seal and hold the water for days without it going down more than a half an inch or so, fix it so it does. Then scrub and bleach it and keep it regularly rinsed out and clean so that you can fill it at a moment's notice. No you don't need a freaking water bob, they're made in China and often fail and are full of God knows what chemicals. Yes you will get some dust in your tub but it's fine, you will boil it and then cool it and then pour it through a Brita or something else for final filtration. For long-term I gave up and bought a bunch of Crystal Geyser 1 gallon jugs. For toilet flushing, washing hands etc etc I keep my big plastic gallon bottles and other stuff and fill that. That's for inside, for outside I'm lucky enough to have about 800 gal stored and another 500 gallon tank on the way. I have small livestock and gardens and I want water stored with pumps and hoses in case of the need for fire suppression.

Medical adjacent.
Before we could render services and extract payment as long as they had a medicaid number (assigned by the hospital).
Now payment can no longer be extracted unless they have valid SSN.
So medical systems can no longer extract federal Medicaid payment for illegals that were given identifiers at a hospital.
Present-Opinion1561@reddit
So do I understand correctly that now the hospitals will have to eat those costs since they cannot refuse care?
Raddish3030@reddit
I said hospital adjacent.
I have the feeling that hospitals and health systems (like Kaiser) can either get federal funding, still.
Or Hospital Health systems, will refuse to eat the cost, can either pass the bill to the state or county level (if the political will exists) to get local government/citizens to eat the cost.
Or other option. Immediate discharge and reduction in services. Stabilize and discharge and dump.
In my mind. I don't think insurance and hospital systems will ever eat the cost, as long as there are political systems willing to hand out tax money for illegals.
Equivalent-Buyer-841@reddit
They will shed the illegals in the system quickly. Can’t see anyone eating the costs. From here on out health care for illegals will be a crapshoot.

Here in West Virginia, I'm noticing the foliage is sickly. Like, the spring didn't develop properly, in terms of leaf formation, and now the fall leaves are a mixture of early color change and partial death. (Showing signs of water stress.)
All of which fills me with unbearable anxiety. I know the water system on this planet is all fucked up, I also know plants hate too much water and too little water, which is happening everywhere. I'm expecting massive breadbasket collapse and all I can do to get prepared is practice starving? Intermittent fasting?

Here in NJ, some trees are already starting to change colors. Its been unseasonably cold here since mid-late August. Pretty sure I saw a report saying the jet stream is getting wonky and pushing cold air down.
Last year, we had tomatoes growing well into October, and had some flowers still blooming in November. That was deeply concerning for the opposite reasons
2quickdraw@reddit
This year I have late squash blooming but almost zero fruit, same with tomatoes that went in late because of late frosts and cold ground temperatures. I had doubled my gardens for this year and have little to show for it except a lot of work and money invested. I don't know that I will be able to grow outdoors for more than another couple of years at least in summer. My zone 8a winter garden was fabulous however. We seeded everything throughout October, had greens and root crops all winter long well into the beginning of this summer. A few chard plants are still growing.

Dirigible1234@reddit
It’s hard not knowing where to plan on finding a place that would make one more resilient. We are finally at the point that we can consider purchasing a bit acreage. We know we aren’t in a sustainable area, but trying to position ourselves in a place that WILL be has left us in a bit of analysis paralysis.
2quickdraw@reddit
I was in your shoes 6 years ago and I made the jump, and I had spent 6 years prior in my spare time looking and gathering data. All the analysis I did still ended up putting me in a place that I could afford but that was politically vicious, and became hotter and dryer much sooner than was predicted. Make your best guess regarding defensible space, i.e; people, floods, and fire, and growing zone, and do what you can to supplement water. I have multiple tanks, and I am probably going to be moving my gardens from outside in beds to inside vertical hydroponics.
At this point somewhere to make a stand that is better than where you currently are will be just that.

We have a beautiful magnolia tree at our house in Buffalo, NY. (Not sure how long ago it was planted but it's maybe 15 feet tall). We've been in this house five years and each spring it blossoms and you enjoy the buds for about a week and a half. Then it's just green the rest of the summer. It did a full blossom and bus three times this summer, including in late July. It's beautiful, but it's scary to think how messed up nature's cycles are getting. 😳

Look into sustainability measures like how to capture rain and renewable energy!
You may be one individual/family but if you can gain momentum and push people to water the plants it could yield positive results.
I also recommend looking into Michael Reynolds (based out of NM) and his concept of Earth ships/biotecture.
