Happy to see this coming online! I worked on this project for years in the planning phase, it'll be a great addition to the existing public transit offerings in the area.

Curious: why the choice of non-electric? My father lives in close proximity to the tracks, and folks around the tracks aren’t thrilled.
Silly-Outside5471@reddit
The Silver Line has been planned since 2000. The plan has always been that it would run along the existing Cotton Belt rail line. The entire line is a quiet zone, which means that there will be limited horn sounding. There obviously will still be the noise from the locomotive.
hluna1998@reddit
I’m gonna assume that any part of the line that passes near residential areas are probably going to have quiet zones in place (meaning that the train can’t sound its horn except in an emergency, such as something or someone being on the tracks).
Trinity Metro in Fort Worth already uses the same model of train that DART is using for this line and they’re pretty dang quiet honestly.
Tell your father it’s gonna be pretty unlikely that him or anyone in the neighborhood will notice the train when it passes by.

Most nimbys aren’t….
DeathByGoldfish@reddit
Who ever said he was a NIMBY? It was simply a question as to why the choice was made?
BigFloatingPlinth@reddit
Before this install had your father ever expressed an opinion on diesel versus electric trains and their pros and cons? If no, I personally, think he latched onto any old thing to complain about even though the rail right of way already existed.
Front_Shower_4165@reddit
Way cheaper and easier to work with the row
Snobolski@reddit
Freight trains still use the line.
The DART trains are noticeably more quiet than a freight locomotive, by the way.
Ok_Flamingo_3059@reddit
Use a part of the line
JacobDR15@reddit
As runaway said, cost is part of it. But also a good portion of the line uses still active freight lines.
ShimeUnter@reddit
probably a lot more expensive to run wires. Texrail are the same trains.
RunawayScrapee@reddit
electrification is an expensive capital cost. those people would've still been upset if it were fully electric.
IllPurpose3524@reddit
The website estimates it will take an hour from Shiloh Road to the Airport and 32 minutes from Addison Station to the airport. That appears to be just convenient enough to be worth using.

lol

Maybe one day the northern surburbs will idk let the southern surburbs(Lancaster, Desoto, Duncanville, Cedar Hill) and communities use dart and allow actual expansion

Those cities are more than welcome to join. They do not pay for any DART anything and that's why they don't get anything.
NewRoryAndMalDrop@reddit
Yeah so in the 80s there was a concerted effort to not allow the cities I mentioned to join. This is why they joined in with STAR.
BigFloatingPlinth@reddit
I think your memory is foggy or your reading is incomplete. They voted no in 1983 during the founding of DART. No pressure was put on keeping them out of DART by an already existing northern suburb membership. The effort to not join DART was very much a, the call is coming from inside the house, issue.

I'm sure Plano and the outlying suburbs will immediately reprice the amount of money dart is being paid to their region and adjust their requests accordingly.
For those who don't know what I'm talking about, Plano and other suburbs used data from PWC of the amount of money being spent in their region vs. what they were paying, but none of the capital expenses/silver line stuff was factored in.
nihouma@reddit
Honestly if Plano wanted legislation to just allow them to reduce their own contribution in exchange for receiving accordingly lower service, that would have been somewhat understandable (not that I would agree with doing so as there are lots of residents in Plano who rely on DART), but instead they tried to get all the suburbs together to forcibly defend all of DART by forcing all the cities to have reduced contribution to DART, even Dallas, Richardson, Garland, Rowlett, Glenn Heights, and Cockrel Hill, which have all indicated they're satisfied, and none of the other burbs seemed dissatisfied until Plano pushed the issue because they saw $$ they could move to plug holes in their city budgets.
Ideally we can move to a truly regional model for projects like TexRail and the Silver Line, instead of local governments building them while other cities contribute nothing but make use of the resources built by those who actually committed their time and money to building infrastructure (looking at you Arlington which treats Centreport almost like an Arlington rail station yet contributes no money to the funding or operations of the TRE)
zakats@reddit
As with all sprawl, I count on them to continue mooching off the inner city.
ihasanemail@reddit
I drive by the new stations in downtown Carrollton and Coppell all the time, it looks dope.
Big-Criticism3565@reddit
Word, good shit Dallas.
Askmeaboutmy_Beergut@reddit
I'm sure the homeless are ecstatic to have a brand new, clean DART train to sleep on.
711SushiChef@reddit
A month? I was thinking like 48 hours
ShimeUnter@reddit
you paid for it, better use it

TexasReallyDoesSuck@reddit
pretty sad your first thought for this is to have some homeless boogeyman issue instead of how nice it is to have a new rail line for the metroplex especially east-west.
ForgottonTNT@reddit
To Celebrate the opening of the Silver Line passengers can ride all of DART for free on Oct. 25, and ride the new rail line for free through Nov. 8.
711SushiChef@reddit
But you can already ride for free if you're a homeless vagrant!
5yrup@reddit
Dang, just a few weeks late for Oktoberfest. Next year!
BamaPhils@reddit
Will help get people to/from Kaboom Town next year too
jsmeeker@reddit
This is really great! The whole line (with all stations it seems) opening in about a month. Addison Transit Center is pretty close to me. I'll have to go some place.
rpgFANATIC@reddit
Actual good news
More mass transit in this sprawling metro is always welcome
saxmanB737@reddit
October 25 to be exact!
