Not in real life, but called out to my soul when I was six years old growing up in a desert state lol. Inspired my passion for the ocean and it’s my dream to make eye contact with one.

On a research cruice to estimate minke whale population in Norway we encountered many marine mammal species. I had my hopes to see blue whales, but also a realistic expectation to not see them. I was in the birds nest on watch with my watch partner, going at 8-9 knots on the west side of Spitsbergen. Suddenly we hear a blow on our starboard side. When we look over we see a mother and calf aprox. 150 meters out. We report to bridge and they put the boat in neutral. It was one of those moments where everything becomes silent and it feels like time slows down. All we heard was the smooth splashing and powerful blows. Both whales stay surprisingly close and after a while we proceeded our transect. Later on the cruice I saw 6 more and I was equally gassed every time. I felt extremely lucky and privileged to be at work while also having these experiences. Together with some awesome humpback observations this will forever be a memory I cherish.

Crossing the Australian Bight in a slow and small cargo ship. I saw a vague disturbance on the water surface ahead. It was a glorious calm and sunny day. At 9 knots we trogged along and I didn't think much when I saw the surface stir again at about 200 meters on the starboard bow. Probably a whale I thought .... Another one! Then as I leant on the starboard bridge wing a huge snort and grunt appeared about 20 meters away on the beam as an enormous Blue Whale came up beside the ship. Just cruising slowly but still faster than us. The water was clear and the animal filled the sea on that side just incredible. She rolled slightly going by and looked up with her port side eye right into my gaze. Like looked right into me. I just couldn't move. Just the sheer massive size. The incredible grace, skimming the surface and swimming as if by will power alone.... The colour was varied and mottled by the sunshine as small wavelets broke over her back. She was greyish, pale blue, dark in places. And beautiful and fabulous and silent. Just silent yet speaking so loudly with her eyes. As suddenly as she came she dived and disappeared, taking my soul with her deeply into her own domain

Beautifully written. That sounds like a wonderful experience. I’d love to see a whale.
