The city probably:
We can't have them in our social club no more

I love to see my tax dollars wasted in this bullshit. For people who have not read the article: basically the owner applied for the permit, jumped through all the hoops, got the permit, then the city revoked the permit citing illegal gambling. Its a private club, with private security staff, following the law, so paying members have the option to play poker as one of their amenities. It ain't some seedy back room gambling ring, the membership fee alone would tell you that. Can we not find some actual crimes being committed instead of this piddly shit?
Aleyla@reddit
The community surrounding this business doesn’t want it. The community doesn’t want the type of people and traffic associated with it. And the way the article says that poker is just one of the amenities is bullshit - gambling the primary purpose of the existence of this high priced “exclusive” and “members only” club.

How does one know if the community does not want this or the traffic associated with it? I am relatively familiar with that area, that particular establishment is directly off the tollway, the closest residential dwelling is behind that business, a traffic increase would most likely be from the tollway, not the streets that homes are located. I could understand if patrons of that social club had to drive through residential areas, I would be upset if I lived there, but that isn't the case. I will never have that level of wealth, but if I was a surrounding business owner I would be eager for this "social club" to get going, if you can catch some of their clientele to frequent your business, that's a good size boost in business. Back to the original point, if residents or surrounding businesses thought it would negatively impact them, then I would caution on this situation. But I have not seen that sentiment, I would expect something like the backlash from the Pepper Square redevelopment if the community did not want this in their neighborhood. Judging by the proximity of the closest actual neighborhood, I would be surprised if they even knew it was there. I could be wrong.

Guess you haven’t been to the hoa meetings.

id think that most people know if one pops up in the area, its sort of been 'legalized' in that area. so then other places around start doing the same thing.
and in that area, I would think the residents would have bit more power than in lower socio economic areas.
like aleyla said, they're saying its 'members only' club. when really they're trying to make small casino, probably betting on gambling being legalized in the near future.
"$600,000 alone was put into a state-of-the-art security system, along with best-in-class security personnel, including our director of security, who is a former chief deputy U.S. marshal,''
thats more than just 'a social club'
i personally dont care one way or the other, but clearly the COD called bullshit. Somebodys palm didnt get greased that needs a lot of grease.

Ahh the good old confidently spewing bullshit on reddit.

You're right that the entire purpose is poker. But it's crazy to think residents would rather have a dilapidated, abandoned building there than a poker room. Tight now they have the best of both world. The owners bought it and fixed it up but now can't operate it. No surprise they're fighting to keep the status quo. But in doing that, they're screwing the owner, who could have gone with a dozen other locations.
DonkeeJote@reddit
I'm in the nearby community and there are several others who want this location to have their legal agreement honored.
TheGrest@reddit
Propose an H‑E‑B there and you get the same reaction.
AEW_SuperFan@reddit
l don't think they should get away with it because they are "upscale". They crack down on lower class gambling rooms all the time.

Revoking the C of O after granting it is not cool.

I would assume a poker/social club that requires a membership would not be attracting a dangerous clientele. Are they thinking this is an underground cock fighting ring or something?

The latest Loserville podcast goes deep on the poker clubs as well. Worth a listen if this is of any interest to you.

Willonsky wrote a solid piece about this. It's so dumb. Awesome that government can just arbitrarily decide to allow or disallow business.
