Took me a bit to get here, but I’ve pushed through. So happy to finally make this milestone.
82381@reddit
Congratulations! I’m a controller there, HYI right? I was up there while you were flying today, great job!
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Yes HYI! That’s so awesome, small world moment right here-thank you my gosh! I was a bit nervous on the comms today 😭😭 first solo jitters and what not
dodexahedron@reddit
You'll have a lot of those small world moments in the future, too. The aviation world is pretty small. There are a lot fewer pilots (with any cert at all) than there are doctors, for example.
jtyson1991@reddit
San Marcos, ever run into Aviation101?
blerpderp9@reddit
He's mostly out of Kentucky now. Dad keeps the hangar and sometimes the plane.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Is this person on YouTube or Social Media-never heard or probably never seen em either.
jtyson1991@reddit
Yes and yes. Congrats on the first solo!
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
I’ll have to check em out, and thank you!!!!
AdSecure2267@reddit
Are you the cranky one that was there last time I flew in years ago. 😂😂😂 I doubt it. He’s probably too cranky for Reddit.
82381@reddit
Being cranky is a requirement for being a controller!
KeelMyLandlord@reddit
oo in a 180 to boot. Nice.
JulienLafleur@reddit
Congrats! (And glad to see you representing for Boston!)
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Thanks! I love my Boston-I must represent!
JulienLafleur@reddit
are you a Boston (ish) native?
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Yes and no. My dad’s got a lot of family up there-never even met them but they exist haha. Every year I take a trip to Massachusetts and visit Boston and the surrounding states.
CryptographerOk3207@reddit
Dude u are so inspiring!
AdSecure2267@reddit
Congrats!
commsapp@reddit
Thats dope
Properly_optimistic@reddit
Congratulations on the solo. I think I soloed around the same number of hours
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Thank you!! Solo twins hehe!
Properly_optimistic@reddit
Looking forward to seeing more from your journey.
Glum-Camp-584@reddit
Congratulations! Welcome to the club! Proud of you!
sykemavel@reddit
‘T’es à trois bandes’? Je comprends pas
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Trying to read my tattoo? Kind of crazy you could pick up that much with how grainy the photo gets as you zoom.
sykemavel@reddit
Yeah I speak a little french so was curious.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
It’s Portuguese, came off of my family’s crest. It refers to three gold diagonal bands inside the crest. It’s an unfinished piece. Hope that helps haha.
sykemavel@reddit
Cheers, guess my language recognition wasn’t that great. Congrats on your solo!
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Close enough for me, and thanks :)!
Marioaloje@reddit
congrats!
Wonderful_Virus_6562@reddit
Nice hat and shirt
Worldly_Koala5163@reddit
Congratulations! I vividly remember my first solo even though it was years ago. Without the weight of my instructor in the cockpit my angle of ascent was so steep all I could say was, " Here I come God."
Imperial_Citizen_00@reddit
No $hit, as I was taxiing to the run up, all that was going through my head was “What the hell am I doing?!”
Followed shortly after that, when the wheels were off the ground by “Well hell, now I HAVE to land this thing on my own, I’m up here now…”
Worldly_Koala5163@reddit
Before I took off, my instructor said make 3, touch and go landings and then pull off. After my third landing he waved me on to continue. He did this several more times and I would have sworn that my landings were impeccable. But I started to worry that I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. When he finally pulled me off, I asked what I was doing wrong. He said wrong! You were doing so well I didn't want to stop you. What self-confidence.
Imperial_Citizen_00@reddit
lol that’s cool, very nice!
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
This made me giggle hahah- like Jesus take the yoke!
Itkillik@reddit
Dude, congrats! I’m currently sitting at 40 and no solo, so want to let you know you’re not alone. Hey if you live in a vacuum and solo at 10 hrs or whatever good on you. I tore my ACL, did reconstructive surgery, and mom got diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and died in two months. It’s just gunna happen the way it does. You’re an incredible inspiration for sticking with it like this - and like you said, being safe
coldnebo@reddit
I’m sorry for your loss.
I lost two parents the past two years, and that was after a year medical deferment for surgeries in 2020.
it’s taken me 30 years to get to 15 hours 😂 so maybe I’ll beat you to solo?
“make them tell you no” is something I heard a military pilot advise about training because the urge to self-select out is strong.
Itkillik@reddit
Omg both in 2 years is brutal. My dad lost both his siblings in 6mo and loss like that is unfathomable to me - my heart truly goes out to you
Wishing you all the best with your training as well! We’ll see it to the solo and beyond :)
coldnebo@reddit
thanks! best to you and all of us students!
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
I’m sorry for your loss, and I genuinely feel for you about everything that’s happened in your life. All I really know at this point is life does not and will not stop for us. We must move with it or it will run us off the road (our journey). The only way out is through. So that’s what I’m doing-seeing this through to the very end. Thank you for your words, did not think that I could be so inspiring for soloing but hearing that truly means a lot. Be safe and well friend!
Itkillik@reddit
You’ve got a kind heart <3 thanks for the kind words. You’re so right, big lesson this year for me has been that time is my most valuable asset and we have zero idea how much time we have left. My mom was young - 66 (well, 67, barely hit her bday) and had SO much she was still planning to do. So I feel you - finally started this and want to see it through as well! Wishing you wonderful weather, and the ability to collect all those life experiences!
estantonfantastico@reddit
Hey I soloed at 60 or 90. I dont remember. But I do remember how time stopped when I was solo first time on final and I did everything right. Stabilized approach, pitch and power, and the chirp of the tires on landing. When it's time, it's time. Every hour in your log book is an hour of experience , not a record of how long, but a record of how prepared you are. Good hunting!
jetfueljunky@reddit
It took me around 40 hours to solo and I felt really discouraged beforehand but the second I took off for the first time by myself all that feeling went away and I loved it!
TOADflyer@reddit
Congrats!
ConsultingStartupEU@reddit
Congratulations!! 🥂
Sidenote: that 172 looks huge!
KBL_1979@reddit
Kudos! I remember my first solo. 43y.o. Cessna 152. I've just found my logbook entry. 21h 54m. Whole PPL(A) took 52h 53m at exam start. Didn't fly before my PPL training. Took 6 months, while working full time job.
Thedoc_tv@reddit
Out of curiosity, why did you take so much time?
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Answered this within the comments on this post-it’s a summary of my experience and some drawbacks not too detailed but check it out if you want to know more.
IPickedUpThatCan@reddit
My CFI was an old cowboy Vietnam F4 pilot. That man solo’d me at 7 hours. I did fine but what the hell man.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Sounds like he might have told you “Back in the day I did my solo at 4 hours, you’re ready at 7-buckle up” haha 🤣.
IPickedUpThatCan@reddit
Since you just started soloing, with all the money you spend on flight training already, think about investing in Microsoft flight sim and a yoke/throttle and running through your planned solo routes in the sim first so you visually recognize them. That’s what I did!
IPickedUpThatCan@reddit
I never ran a checklist with him. He just had me memorize everything and when I asked about the dangers of spins he was like let’s do some. I miss that guy.
peterept@reddit
Congrats. I’m at 40 hours and getting close to solo.
I don’t know how people are all able to do it so low, I feel like I’m just getting the basics right.
Plus demonstrating all the maneuvers and getting through the pre-solo 10 page test - there’s just so much to learn!
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Keep pushing through and then crush that Solo! It’ll be here before you know it.
It’s crazy to see some of the low hours people do their solo at, like it’s amazing and good for you if you solo’d at 10 hours but in my mind I’m like I absolutely would have not wanted to be left alone in a plane at 10 hours lol!
There’s always much to learn! It feels like we are studying out of a never ending book.
Mysterious-Engine166@reddit
Congrats!
LordOfTheHodors@reddit
congrats!!!
PrettyNetEngineer@reddit
Congratulations!!🥳🥳
MexicanGuey@reddit
Great job! Did my solo @ 43 hours. (Late 30s and work full time too)
Had a hard time with my landings. Couldn’t get the round out and flair right consistently. One day I would round out perfectly, but my flairs were bad which resulted in hard landings, other days my round outs were too high and some days I had smooth landings
Eventually it clicked and landings are buttery smooth. Getting ready for my first xc solo!
Gusearth@reddit
sounds exactly like me right now haha. landings have been the hardest thing to learn and stretches of bad weather keep resetting progress
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Thank you, and congratulations yourself!! Go crush your xc solo!!
Imperial_Citizen_00@reddit
Just wait til you Solo XC, you haven’t had fun yet up until that point! Easily the most fun experience I’ve had in my training so far
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Thank you! Also solo XC is something I’m looking forward to-not trying to get too ahead of myself though :)
Not in MA, but pretty familiar with MASS. I visit typically once a year out towards the Boston/Cape area. So no stranger to east cost.
Imperial_Citizen_00@reddit
Congrats! I remember hitting this milestone, I was terrified and exhilarated at the same time, every solo after that got even more and more fun!!
You actually in MA? Fellow Mass-hole here! 👏🏻
Like_A_Minkx@reddit
Just had my solo today too! Congrats! What a thrill huh?
7-Colored-Puppeteer@reddit
Congrats! How does JD handle with that STOL kit on it? It was just the other day when I was calling your school to see if they'd let me rent, but they aren't accepting that at the moment unfortunately.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Thank you!! JD handles great, especially at slower speeds with the STOL kit. I thought all the planes in the fleet were available to rent but might be different now that the school purchased JD from the original owner.
7-Colored-Puppeteer@reddit
All school aircraft are unavailable to non-students, and I train elsewhere. Sucks, since I'll be in San Marcos in a year and none if the schools there offer rentals lol
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Will you be living in San Mo? Do you plan on getting into a mom n pop part 61 flying school?
7-Colored-Puppeteer@reddit
Yeah, I'll be there living in a dorm for uni. Ill have my PPL before then, though
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
You planning on attend school at TxSt? I think coast has a program through that school.
7-Colored-Puppeteer@reddit
I am, but I'm not going into aviation as a career, so the program isn't necessary. I'll have my private within a month or two, and dont intend tk get further certificates
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Makes sense, that’s awesome! If you’re looking for friends in the area it would be fun to get together! Always nice to know people in the aviation world. I’m based in SA, but I fly out of San Mo.
7-Colored-Puppeteer@reddit
Honestly that would be amazing
Fuzzy-Landscape661@reddit
Can I ask how it took so long?
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Answered this within the comments on this post-it’s a summary of my experience and some drawbacks not too detailed but check it out if you want to know more.

Congrats! It's a memory you'll never forget!
Affectionate_Pay5051@reddit
Congrats can you message me I have some questions
NYC_Traveler_@reddit
That is some hard work and dedication!
CookDesigner9733@reddit
Well done, it took me 88 hours
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Love to see it- more hours means more exposure!
YIKUZZ@reddit
I made the mistake of wearing a black shirt, I still hung it on my wall but you can barely see what’s about, in my next life I’ll wear a light blue light green shirt
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
I’m envisioning your next life for you now haha. Green shirt green green, light blue shirt light blue light blue!
geoffbutler@reddit
Congrats! For a couple of reasons, I soloed at 50+ hours as well. The upside was that I had zero nerves, I felt completely confident.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Let’s go 50+ hours twins!!
swagredditor6@reddit
Just curious but how tall are you
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
A big ol 5 feet and 1 inch - I am living proof shorties can do it too!
Comprehensive_Run588@reddit
5' AGL or 602' MSL Congrats on your solo! I got my license in that same plane!
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Thank you!!
And no way like this very plane or do you mean same make/model and year?
Comprehensive_Run588@reddit
Exact. same. plane. Aspen display and steam gauges, STOL kit, engine STC, hangared at KHYI. Does the glove box still have a dice as the knob?
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
YES! Then it’s the exact same plane. Small world huh?
schminkles@reddit
Nice work. I just slide the seat all the way forwards and crank the height all the way up. I still have to watch the dg to keep runway heading on climb.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
I do the exact same thing except I have a little seat cushion I put behind my back and it does the job. Can see everything over the cowling and it gets me to the rudders.
schminkles@reddit
Best part is once you get a license you can buy a c150 because you will fit in it just fine.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Seems like the perfect plan to me! Just a girl with a plan!
coldnebo@reddit
or a J3 Cub when you want to pick up that tailwheel endorsement! 😍👍
congrats!!🎉
Hazel-Beom@reddit
Nvm this answered my previous question but which seat did u buy. I also want to buy it
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
It’s called the pilots elevator cushion-sportys sells it. It’s a bit expensive but it’s worth it. Thankfully my school provides them so that I can use it.
Hazel-Beom@reddit
Do you use a booster seat? And can you see the nose of the plane
estantonfantastico@reddit
Awesome!!! Good going! Be safe and keep learning!
amansus@reddit
Nice got mine at 45! Keep it up!
texas1982@reddit
51? The hell? Is this common now?
ValuableJumpy8208@reddit
That’s what I’ve wondered for a long time. I see so many posts with people talking about not soloing for 50, 70, or 100 hours. I feel like they’re getting milked or just approached training the wrong way. By 50 hours I’d already flown a half-dozen passengers on my certificate (checkride at 43 hours).
texas1982@reddit
I had 40 hours or something when I soloed, but I also stated flying at 14. I had to wait until my birthday. I was ready to solo at 15 hours.
50 with no limitations is nuts.
ValuableJumpy8208@reddit
I did mine my senior year of college, so I was 21. I usually flew 3 days a week and sometimes had lessons at 6AM to fit them in before class.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
In all fairness I’ve been through the trenches like a war soldier.
Redneckish87@reddit
Nice job! It’s always exciting to turn the corner like that when it all starts to come together!! It all starts to get easier from here once you’re able to build a bit of confidence and see some results! I will caution you about your metaphor though. Tom Brady once said football is much like being on a military deployment and caught a bunch of grief for it. Comparing flying in a Cessna to being a war soldier might rub some people the wrong way. Im hoping that you just take that as friendly advice from an old guy that wishes he was still flying.
The day of your first solo is a great day, I hope that you’re celebrating well!!!! I remember my first time up solo. The accomplishments that you’re going to have just get better and better! Congrats and enjoy the ride!
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Thank you!! I will definitely be celebrating this small win.
Also thank you again—I never really thought about how that joke might fall on the possible receiving end in that sense. I appreciate it. Even though I definitely know flying and being in war are nothing alike and non comparable in any way this makes me more aware about saying such so I appreciate the kind words.
wildblueyonder_00@reddit
Congratulations
True_Context7058@reddit
The day you stop feeling like a passenger and start feeling like a pilot. You’ll remember this one forever
phoenixofsevenhills@reddit
Go Sox!
redditthrown123@reddit
Without zooming in, it looks like you're doing the Ricky Bobby interview after his first race. First or last! Well not in a plane now that I think about it.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
This is so funny I’m cracking up. Going to frame my photo with that scene from Ricky Bobby haha!
redditthrown123@reddit
Ha thats great! Maybe with the caption of "I just wanna go fast." Would be perfect for that since he says that line in that scene 😂
EndOfTheKaliYuga@reddit
I just took up my first discovery flight and my first solo seems impossibly far away lmao. Gg
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Time and patience are going to be your best friend in your flying journey-at least that’s been my experience so far. Welcome to the aviation community a discovery flight is a great way to start. Good luck!
Prestigious_Gear9564@reddit
Awesome! Congrats I can’t wait to solo! So happy for you!!!
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Thank you! It’ll happen before you know it-good luck and crush that solo!
GG135LR@reddit
Well done! I did my first solo in June ‘95, I’ll never forget that day. Savor the memory, it only happens once.
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
As a fellow Bostonian, now Californian, it's nice to see the time honored tradition of doubling up your Sox logos is alive and well!
Congrats! My wife just soloed two weeks ago!
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
I have officially reached the right crowd haha!! I thought I might look a little goofy for doubling up my soxs shirt and hat but hey I must support.
Thank you, and congratulations to your wife!
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
Haha. I tell people wearing a Boston Red Sox hat doesn't really count, as that's just part of the staple Bostonian outfit.
I got called out for it one night at a bar in Upstate NY, many many years ago... I'm talkin' to this girl and she's like "yeah I could tell you're from Boston, you're triple Sox logos" (hat, shirt, wristband) Damn, blew up my spot lol.
One day I hope to make it back there to the old neighborhood and fly my GA plane around. That'd be fun.
Cheers, good luck in the rest of your PPL training.
Reaver_XIX@reddit
Congratulations, it is a great achievement and fantastic feeling!
Brave-Elephant9292@reddit
I remember when I went solo in a glider. My instructor was dead quiet for the whole flight while I was mentally chastising myself and correcting small errors. We landed and my instructor cleared his throat to talk.....I thought, here we go!... A lecture on what I did wrong... (An air force club, so no word mincing)" You are getting too dangerous to fly with".........So why don't you fly by yourself for a while"... All through that flight I could hear his voice in my head. Watch the drift. Check your airspeed..... I was still grinning even after the ice water shower I received after getting out of the glider....I have over 3000 hours in both power and gliding but still remember that day like it was yesterday and still get a thrill when the rope goes tight/ the wheels start rolling.....congratulations for joining a very small and tight community. Your a pilot now and have safely navigated an aircraft into the air and returned by yourself. Feel proud!......👏

My wife soloed about 30 years ago. To this day she says it was the most exciting thing she’s experienced (and I still laugh at how that reflects on me). Congratulations and best wishes for the many years of safe flying ahead of you.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
This made me giggle haha! But thank you thank you!!!!
goblazers123@reddit
Congrats! Probably going to be in the same path as you. How many lessons a week did you do ?
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Thank you! Currently I am doing two flights a week. I started off on only weekends but worked something out with my 9-5 to be able to get out earlier and go in earlier some days so that I could get some flying in during the week and not only on weekends. I like to spread my flights out like I’ll fly Tuesday and then Sunday. Good luck!
goblazers123@reddit
Thanks! How much studying did you have to do in between your lessons?
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
I chair fly once a week typically between my off days from flying. I also live on YouTube and watch anything aviation related for flight maneuvers, emergency procedures, instrument knowledge etc just about daily. I try to throw in some Sporty’s lessons here and there to keep that written info active somewhere in my brain. I have yet to take my written because I really wanted to get my solo down, but now that I have the written will be the next step.
Truth be told I don’t think I study enough and aim to study more than I do, but it’s a process I am still trying to perfect. It’s a give and take situation. Find out what works best for you.
Just-Sea3037@reddit
Congratulations! Don't worry about the hours, being confident and safe are what's important.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Thank you! Starting to feel this in my bones. I’m ready when I’m ready-I played it safe and felt it was time. The day came and it was well deserved!
Mid_Atlantic_Lad@reddit
I did mine at 45 hours. Just means that you’re that much more experienced.
KiwifromtheTron@reddit
Hours don't matter, its the journey that matters. Take time to enjoy leaping this small hurdle along the path, but now you owe it to yourself to carry onto your PPL and possibly beyond!
CaptPizza3@reddit
Congrats. Don't focus on hours. Just learn at your own pace.

Norwood?
0DSavior@reddit
My initial thought as well, haha.
bhalter80@reddit
I was wondering if it was KOWD one of the Boston area airports
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Ahhh that’s what I thought. Googled Norwood and kept getting a suburb in Massachusetts. The Boston shirt and hat would make one assume I am a Bostonian, but I am actually out here in Texas. The state where everything is bigger!

I still have my father's shirtsleeve from his first solo ages before i was born. By the time I got mine done the tradition was out of fashion where I lived, so I didn't cut mine off. Missed opportunity.
Congrats and enjoy the skies! (Also, who on earth does a first solo in a 180? Thats rad!)
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
That’s unfortunate to hear, regardless good to hear you have kept your father’s shirtsleeve. That’s sentimental and that never looses value.
This is my favored plane in the entire fleet at my school, I guess they’re not worried as long as someone’s willing to pay for it haha!

Maclunkey4U@reddit
Good job, and go Sox!!
NewYork-Paki@reddit
I'm not judging just curious, but why did it take so long, and would you have done anything differently?
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Well there were multiple things that held me back but I’ll list the few.
First and foremost I encountered issues with my first instructor-I made another post on my Reddit regarding this so I won’t go too much into detail if you want to check it out it’ll give you the nitty gritty. However this resulted in about half a year of trying to reach 15-20 hours. Which was a set back for me truly. After I realized I was going to get no where with my first CFI I switched to another CFI and due to the small mom and pop school I’m at they are booked on their calendars about a month in advance-I had to go about a month and a half without flying at all once I swapped CFIs.
After I got my new CFI I had to relearn a lot of things-weed out the bad habits and form good ones, things started improving a lot for me and around my 35 hours I was solo ready again, but my second CFI told me she was going to the airlines-I had to get a new CFI again. Honestly at that point I was very in my head about everything and feeling very down about my flying and having so many hours and not having solo’d. My mindset caused me to plateau a bit do to my negative thinking.
If I could recommend anything it would be - don’t be afraid to switch CFIs, and your thinking/mindset is everything. If I was down about anything my flying reflected that. I had to stay positive through dark times and I started noticing my flying improved.
NewYork-Paki@reddit
Similar things happened to me. I had to switch instructors three times and finally passed my PPL after a year and about 103 hours.
lonelyistheroom-@reddit (OP)
Happy to know I’m not the only one who’s gone through this, regardless you did it and congratulations on doing so!! What an accomplishment to push through the thickness of it all to see the reward at the end.
