So four of those clunkers lumbered into the sky. Which means they had 9-10 planes in total involved when given the F-35s availability rate.
DrumminJ219@reddit
Fighter pilot here: It's simple. #4 is the hardest position to fly, and it's usually the new(er) guy/gal flying it. They are just pumped full of adrenaline, trying to hold on, and over-correcting in what is likely their first or one of very few flyovers. It's not easy.
Also it's rare to even fly this formation with a 4 ship these days, so very few hacks at it for practice, without the added adrenaline kicker of being on TV.
Kaos2800@reddit
Formation Pilot here. As @DrumminJ219 said. #4 hard, #2/#4 typically less experienced. Also, you can see he’s super tight on #3, notice their wing is directly behind #3, this is called overlap and has a number of effects. A) you’re literally flying through #3’s right wing vortex which makes holding position harder. B) The wake causes your ailerons to feel super heavy…probably not an issue on a fly by wire system, but definitely is on a push rod type, you can feel it and what are usually small connections because significantly harder.
humoristhenewblack@reddit
Ignorant not-pilot here: Why are you putting the rookie in the hardest spot?
DrumminJ219@reddit
#1 and #3 spot are flight lead qualified (basic fighter tactics pair up 2 or 4 jets, so a 4-ship formation can split the #3 and #4 jet off meaning #3 needs to be a flight lead.) That leaves #2 and #4. Typically those are both wingmen (lowest of the quals hence new(er) pilot) It's likely both #2 and #4 here are wingmen only. That being said, I've seen plenty of high time guys still struggle with the #4 spot.
lloydeph6@reddit
How much do fighter pilots get paid annually and what jobs are out there for you guys when you retire?
I’m guessing just new recruits?

DrumminJ219@reddit
It's under the same officer payrate that any US Military officer would get, with some added incentives like flight pay (averages anywhere from an extra 200 to 1000 a month based on years of experience). And then there are retention bonuses if you've served long enough to get out, those can be anywhere from 15K to 50K a year to keep you in for 1-4 years or so.
Most fighter guys go airlines / cargo. Also know a lot that went wildly different routes like getting MBA's or government contractors (sim instructors is a big one).
There are some overseas jobs as well, usually instructing or sim instructing, and always with a country that we are typically very friendly with (still has to get approved by the state department after all).

Hadrollo@reddit
I've absolutely no experience with aviation, but from reading this I'm not overly surprised to see they look a little bit like Trail Names.
Trail names are a bit of a tradition on long hikes. You can make your own or be given one, and it's not uncommon for the reason you get one to be less than dashing circumstances.
Anyone with the name Chuck, Woodchuck, or Woody has probably projectile vomited at a campsite. I met a guy called "Brownie" who had a cup of coffee before a particularly difficult ascent and met a fate similar to the one in the article. Other names are more endearing or heroic; "Bearfoot" survived a bear attack in his younger days and was left with a nasty scar on his foot, "BMW" is Bavarian Man Walking, but then you find that the petite young woman affectionately called "Pea" got her name from her tiny bladder.

During the excellent PBS series "Carrier" they talked about callsigns, one of the pilots had the callsign "Dahigi" because he worked a lot of "side deals" and would always say "Don't ask how I got it." :)
Rowing_Lawyer@reddit
Not a pilot question, I’m assuming they already have a call sign, can they get another one?
birwin353@reddit
Absolutely, if you do something even stupider or more funny than what got you your current callsign, it’s gonna get changed. But i think you don’t have to worry about that now do you Crash!
Bulletsandbandages44@reddit
Usually new wingmen don’t get callsigns until they’ve been fully mission qualified for a while. So if this person is new-er, they may still be un-named, and this event would absolutely be ammo for a naming.
There are rules, but the answer is yes, you can have a hostile re-naming. Units often protect your name against a hostile re-naming once you drop live weapons in combat.
Abbygirl1001@reddit
Makes perfect sense in a combat role. I would have thought though, that for something so public facing as a flyover a little more thought and preparation would have gone into it.

Because the experienced pilots are flight and element leaders who lead their respective wingman, and thus need to be in front. Imagine that formation but significantly farther spread apart which is where they would usually operate.
It’s basically the result of combat formations being shrunk to parade size

Key component to a lot of military training - trust the guy behind you to do his job
A lot of nuances to that, but it’s one thing I miss the most since getting out, knowing that (in general) you could trust people to be actually trying and they were trusting you to do the same.
3 isn’t concerned with 4, just doing his job as well as he can so 4 can do the same
Sorry for rambling, but thanks for letting me ramble. I miss my old career and enjoy talking about it :(
PLAYTZ2@reddit

DrumminJ219@reddit
#1 is focused on timing. That can be tough as well, especially when national anthem starts early/late or drags on (sometimes a pilot in the stadium with a radio will try to help with this)
Everyone else is flying off of #1. So...#2 and #3 here are just flying off #1.
#4 on the other hand, is flying off #3 who is flying off #1...so usually you'd want to just try to fly off 1 and not bite off on what 3 does (without hitting him and keeping spacing). But low time guys will usually focus on being in position with 3 still, and they end up "on the end of the whip", having to make bigger corrections. The pro move is to sorta look through 3 while keeping spacing on 3.
As for the sandwiching comment, #3 isn't looking at the #4 guy, so it's not adding anything to his plate being in-between them (other than hoping his #4 doesn't hit him).
bad_dazzles@reddit
Can confirm. I've been #9 on the end of echelon for a photo shoot and I've never done anything scarier before or since.
fountainsofvarnoth@reddit
End of the whip!
stevestevetwosteves@reddit
Talk about riding the whip, I can't even imagine
Isssaman@reddit
Agree with Drium. What makes it hard is amplification. A ripple unseen from the ground by lead is amplified by three {element lead) becomes visible with four. This is fingertip, Even worse if lead signals echelon where two slides over like you would do on initial to land. That makes the pitchout be in order.
natneo81@reddit
Question: why do you find 4 the hardest? I play a lot of Falcon BMS, an F-16 sim, (making myself cringe sorry) and personally I always struggle being the 3 man. The mix of element lead responsibility, while still having to deconflict with 1/2 seemed to me like a difficult position. For example, obviously the 1 man has flight lead responsibilities, but other than flying the correct heading/speed/altitude, you’re not really required to maintain formation, everyone is formed on you. Isn’t the 3 man responsible for sensor awareness and more “heads down” work, as element lead, as well as maintaining formation with 1 or 2?
I guess I’m also wondering what makes 4 a harder role than 2? I guess maybe in fingertip, 4 only has 3 next to him for reference, making it harder to keep formation? Whereas 2 has 1, but is also abeam 3? Dunno.
Again, just a nerd who likes playing fighter jet, so forgive my stupidity. Would appreciate your insight!
Disastrous-Run-3963@reddit
Thanks for the insight. Why do I have to scroll through like 15 nonsensical gobiligoop before getting a straight answer? It seems like it happens every post.
Uncabuddha@reddit
Kinda hard to see 2 but 3 and 4 look too close to 1. So 2 is out of position and 4 is running himself out of fuel cobbing the throttle. They don't fly much 4-ship these days? WTF? How do you set up a "wall of Eagles" with only a 2-ship? (ex-Eagle guy)
EagleDriver009@reddit
4 is too tight to be putting that amount of correction into the controls. If he/she would slide out a couple of feet, they’d match 3 & 2 and could relax a little. Look through 3 at 1 and fly and stable jet. 4 should have plenty of experience in that position if he/she’s getting selected to do a flyover. They don’t fly 4-ship fingertip that much anymore? What has the AF come to? (also ex Eagle guy here)
Uncabuddha@reddit
Well, from my experience, that video is gonna warrant some serious ribbing from his squadron mates and a good ass chewing from 1. (if ass chewing is even allowed anymore, I dunno)
DrumminJ219@reddit
The spacing here looks ok. It's just #4 over-correcting. Wiggle those toes some bud and relax that deathgrip.
I meant they don't fly up initial in fingertip all that much, usually tactical recoveries, or if going to/from airspace it's tactical offset container, or trail ect... Wall tactics still valid, and much farther apart than fingertip (or parade for you navy types).
tcannon521@reddit
Interesting, I assumed a pilot would have to log a lot of hours in other planes before being placed in any latest generation stealth plane.
In my mind, those pilots would be the most skilled and most senior in the armed forces.
--AnAt-man--@reddit
Not a fighter pilot here - but, are you sure they weren’t waving to their SO in the audience?
Femme_Werewolf23@reddit
Do you guys not train yourselves to find "the zone" at will?
I don't have flight experience but I have a lot of motorsport experience. It's very commonly known that nobody in the world performs well under an adrenaline rush, so the thing you have to do is learn how to perform with your life on the line, with out having one. Otherwise you are entirely locked out of the higher echelons of human performance.
Its also commonly known to back off and take it easy if you scare yourself. Like its super common to watch somebody miss their breaking zone, gather the car up, then throw it off the track 1-2 corners later with a stupid mistake because the driver tried to keep their pace up with a head full of adrenaline.
Im just floored that you guys and gals are given multi million dollar machines to operate and guy in a $15,000 spec miata might have a better handle on their psychology. Say it ain't so!!
Environmental-Block1@reddit
Did you just propose that a tuner in a clapped out Miata is a finer performance example than an F-35 pilot?
Anyone who has a couple bucks, access to Craigslist, and a tweaker friend who’s dad has an awesome set of tools can go drop FOD on the local road course.
The bar for entry is a tad bit taller for a 6th Gen fighter slot. Also, probably best to read the room beforehand.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.
YummyJuice@reddit
Yes fighter pilots do train to be in the zone but as I’m sure you’re aware of from your motorsports experience, some people have it and some people don’t (not saying the wobbly #4 doesn’t, he wouldn’t be flying that jet if he didn’t have it).
What is different between motorsports and flying a fighter jet (and specifically to this formation) is that there is no chance to “take your foot off the gas”. Unlike a race track, flying #4 in this formation means you don’t get any “straights” to lower your adrenaline, you need to be on the ball from the start to the finish, no questions.
What has happened here is that #4 has over corrected off #3. Now if we relate it to a race track, one correction from #3/#1 could represent one corner of a race track. In this formation those corrections are happening continuously at the millisecond level and the #4 pilot needs to respond to those corrections. So back to the race track, the pilot in #4 is essentially doing continuous back to back cornering (but in 3 dimensions + time), and any motorsport enthusiast knows that stuffing up corner 1 means the following corners are also affected. This multiplies massively when you factor in the third dimension + time delays.
The best analogy I can use for this (at least how I used to think about it when I was doing this) is imagine a piece of string from #1 to #4, where a wave (originating from a correction/change in movement from #1) is propagating along that string and the amplitude of the wave increases exponentially the further you get from #1. This means that #4 at the end of the string is receiving a huge wave and therefore they need more corrections to correct (nullify?) against the wave.
As stated above, a more experienced/or better close formation pilot “looks through” #3 to #1 and bases their vertical and forward/back movement off of #1 primarily and then bases their horizontal (lateral distance) position off #3. This essentially boils down to having a rapid eye scan continuously between #1 and #3 and being able to basically predict the next 3 seconds or so of their movement based off what you’re currently seeing and then making your correction such that after you make your correction, in 3s or less your aircraft will be back in position and stable within the formation. And don’t forget that a jet engine has a delay between power selection on the throttle and the selected power being actually output due to turbine spool up delay.
Again, no straights or chances to relax when you’re old mate in #4. It’s happened to the best of us and always will at the worst of times.
Back to your in the zone comment, try recomposing yourself in 3D space + time in a fighter jet and keep perfect positioning with another fighter jet less than 10m away at 420kts. Whilst managing your own aircraft, radios, etc. There’s a reason why only a very few people in the world are selected to be fighter pilots and that’s one of them.

do F-35´s also go through Wake Turbulence? or are they on another level that that doesn't affect them?
fmr_AZ_PSM@reddit
As a control systems engineer (not avionics though) I would expect the fly by wire to help calm that oscillation down. Be able to outright prevent it too. Does it not do that?
That's bizarre to me. That kind of thing is bread and butter of modern digital control systems in other industries. It's a "new" (since the mid 80s) capability that's a big driver of replacing legacy analog/electromechanical systems. Half of the money I've ever earned has been doing that work.
yarrums1@reddit
Fly by wire in a fighter doesn’t necessarily calm oscillations caused by the pilot himself. This is a PIO (pilot induced oscillation). 4 is putting a larger correction in than needed then has to immediately counteract it with a correction, but it’s too big, so 4 overcorrects the other way, and the cycle continues.
This is why u/DrumminJ219 stated that 4 needs to wiggle fingers/toes because it’s a way that we relax pressure on the stick, so to speak.

Unless they do it differently in the USAF generally in a Vic formation 2 is on lead’s right and 3 is on lead’s left. 4 would be Line Astern but in this Finger formation they’d be on either side of 2 or 3.

Reminds me of a story in my short lived flight school. Guy was getting his sign off on a helo solo, but kept losing focus on the downwind turn. Upon landing, the onwing asked what was up, and the student pilot's wife was kicking him out, he lived under the pattern, and he was just trying to inventory what was on his front lawn.
pickled-pilot@reddit
That’s a good reason not to fly.
Ecthelion-O-Fountain@reddit
I don’t know if the military is like that. I think they kinda just expect you to go all the time like you could say no but they’ll just kick you out of school.
Lawdoc1@reddit
I can't speak of how it's handled now, but I recall some of my comrades that were flight crew (not pilots, but crew chiefs, etc...) being removed from flight status when they were dealing with personal life issues.
I also recall a lot of my pilots (I was a medic for a Marine Air Wing and several squadrons) being unwilling to discuss those difficulties for fear of being removed from flight status.
I also know that has been an issue among airline pilots.
pickled-pilot@reddit
That’s wild. Private pilot training involves checking your mental state before you fly. This guy was not in the proper mental state.
Now perhaps, being in the military, he needed to recognize and check that mental attitude. In this case he failed to do so. Losing focus while flying will cost lives.
waytosoon@reddit
No it's not. They're literally either trying to kill, or trying not to be killed. They need to be able to maintain the mission no matter what. War is stressful.

pickled-pilot@reddit
Any possible answer to him finding out while in the pattern involves him not paying attention to flying the pattern.
ExpertTrain5820@reddit
Not at all. Deciding that you arent fit to fly on a particular day is drilled into any prospective pilot as a responsibility like any other. The training squadrons and military aviation as a whole practice operational risk management, and constantly balance the risks of a flight vs the potential payoffs. If the risk (greatly increased posibility of mishap) outweighs the benefit (completing a T&R code) the flight is cancelled. Full stop. The trainee in this situation absolutely should have decided he needed to take time to get his personal shit taken care of.
Realistically though, they wouldnt cancel the flight. His partner would just be getting 2 codes that day instead of one. Hope he studied ahead lol.

In an aircraft context, "horizontal tails waving to crowd" is a metaphorical way to describe the movement of an aircraft's elevators and horizontal stabilizers during certain maneuvers. This is not a literal gesture, but rather a pilot's use of flight controls to appear to salute or wave to people on the ground. How it works The movement is performed by the pilot and involves two parts of the aircraft's tail, or empennage: Elevators: These are the movable control surfaces on the trailing edge of the horizontal tail. Pulling back on the yoke or stick moves them up, while pushing forward moves them down, controlling the aircraft's pitch (the up-and-down movement of the nose). Stabilators: In some aircraft, the entire horizontal tail surface is a single, all-moving piece called a stabilator. The effect is the same, but the entire surface pivots as one unit. To create a "waving" effect, a pilot rapidly pitches the aircraft's nose up and down. This causes the horizontal tail surface (and its elevators) to repeatedly move up and down in a motion that resembles a wave. Context for this maneuver This kind of maneuver is most commonly performed in the following contexts: Airshows and military demonstrations: Pilots of fighter jets or demonstration teams often perform maneuvers like this as a form of theatrics at the end of a performance, as if waving goodbye to the spectators. Celebratory flyovers: Military and naval aviators may execute this as a playful, informal salute to people on a ship, airfield, or on the ground below.

Complete waste of money! Multiple AD departments, like Utah's, spend thousands-of-dollars to do this each time. The money can be better spent, like how about putting in towards lowering ticket prices. The cheapest price for a nose-bleed seat at Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium is $75!
Hdaana1@reddit
They count as training hours and the Military doesn't receive any money for them.
Intelligent_Entry576@reddit
That was the case until about 2006! Before then, the military would field requests, approve them on a case-by-case basis, then write them off and log them as pilot/air crew flight time.
In '06, the AF changed its policy. They would still mostly do the big events in a similar fashion, such as the Super Bowl, World Series, etc., but otherwise, there became a cost and bill attached, which would then be paid by either the league, a specific team owner, conference, or AD!
BettyWhiteOnBlack@reddit
Reminds me of a story about the time I was delivering furniture to a stunning cottage in rural Wales UK, it had a stepping stone path that went over a little stream etc. Anyway as I was talking to the home owner about how good a job she did renewing a rundown home a fighter jet from the RAF flew over and it was loud! So I said wow that's cool! Home owner then told me the jets used to be a lot lower as nobody lived there for years, and she wrote a letter to the RAF saying how noisy it was/rattling windows etc.
Then afterwards one day, she said a harrier jet passed and did the wave (I can't remember if she said it was hovering or just going 'slow'), as a sign to say "sorry...we got you", and from that day on they flew higher. Pretty cool I thought.
thejt39@reddit

Waving at the camera. The sensors on the f-35 might be strong enough for the pilot to see that.

WLFGHST@reddit
You know what he means, looking down at the stadium and not locked in on the jet next to him.
gefahr@reddit
In the F-35s they can see "through" the plane via the helmet right? That would be entirely too tempting to peek at for me.
WLFGHST@reddit
tempting yes, but in a fighter jet flying in formation you are trusted to have a level of professionalism and common sense to remain focused on not hitting another jet, its basically texting and driving, but in the air a few feet from another jet going hundreds of miles per hour.

Always have this question, who is paying for flying US Airforce jets, often the fancy / expensive ones, over the stadiums for the commercial sport events? Are these flying overs counted as recruitment costs for the military, or paid by events organized?

Possibly wake turbulence and the pilot possibility of the pilot not being used to flying in close formation like that. Who knows, but everything is practiced including these flybys.

You aren’t getting meaningful effects of wake turbulence or exhaust in this position, he’s just overcontrolling

That's what I'm thinking.
