How do they know where to go?

I was just thinking. Animals in the ocean have so much space. What guides their travel, and what "choices" are they making?
I understand the Earth's magnetic field, food, and maybe predators. What else is there?

Passed down knowledge, at least for killer whales. The southern residents pods were captured in Penn Cove in the 1970s and L pod decided to re-enter the cove after 54 years last year.
