Can someone explain who Charlie Kirk was?

I just learned about Charlie Kirk because of the news of his death. In my country this hasn’t been covered much, and American media assume the reader already knows him. Wikipedia feels too specific and don’t really explain how was he seen by American people. So I’m hoping to hear directly from Americans. Who was Charlie Kirk, and why was he considered important? PS: I'm not sure if this is allowed in this subreddit. Sorry if not. I juts want to make clear that I’m not looking to debate politics, I just want to understand more about who he was and his importance.
