What’s your go-to hidden gem spot in Dallas that you almost don’t want to share?

I think this could be handy for newcomers (and honestly even for folks who’ve lived here a while)
Curious what spots y’all swear by but hesitate to spill

La Spiga - great bakery and the best value lunch in the city. Hidden gem by the Addison Airport.

Doe's BBQ. Get the 4 meat potato...
othersymbiote@reddit
there’s this place in richardson, i think it’s called long john silvers? yeah… that’s it long john silvers.
East-Canary-538@reddit
I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic because people love to hate on long John silvers but I actually get lunch there like once a week lol. Next to the worst Taco Bell in Richardson.
othersymbiote@reddit
hahahah i mean it isn’t a hidden gem, is all. i love LJS and will always love it! the richardson location is just the closest one to me, after they’ve seemingly gone extinct.
i’m also a fan of captain d’s! i’ll help keep LJS open with you! hahah
East-Canary-538@reddit
Hell yeah. I also don’t know if there’s any other locations around.
othersymbiote@reddit
no but in all serious, it’s not hidden, it’s very out there, in fact. and very busy during the right times (aka whenever i am available bc i work usual hours “adults” work.) but mcrae’s american bistro on garland road. great place.

I mean, Pepe and Mito’s always satisfies… and the Gold Rush Cafe!
Responsible-Pass-657@reddit (OP)
Never tried either of those.. but i will. Pepe & Mito’s has been on my radar though. And Gold Rush Café, What’s the move there, breakfast?
jalapenos10@reddit
I didn’t get the hype about Pepe’s. I had been looking forward to it after I thought I found a hidden gem but was super unimpressed when I went and since I’ve seen people raving about it on Reddit
DustbowlDarrell@reddit
Being from west Texas and having an eye for the best Mexican spots I wasn’t terribly impressed, but it was definitely decent. I don’t have anything bad to say about it but I also think it’s overhyped
jalapenos10@reddit
Yeah that’s fair. It wasn’t terrible, I just wouldn’t go back
PurpleQuantity6688@reddit
Are you fishing for social media content?
GlossyBuckslip@reddit
Gold Rush is an institution. Breakfast is served all day, the lunch/brunch stuff is pretty good. George and family are great people.

Pepe’s! Legendary

OohDoTell@reddit
There’s a No. 1 Plus Chicken near the corner of Belt Line and Jupiter Rd. in Richardson, if you’re looking for another location. I haven’t eaten there yet but wanted to share.
Raider03@reddit
Heck yeah. I need to get up there more often.
Rit_Zien@reddit
It is so very Dallas that every answer is a restaurant 😂
springbluebell1@reddit
I was wondering if I missed the part where they asked about restaurants. So Dallas.
HoneyIShrunkMyNads@reddit
My mind goes to restaurants too but there are actually a lot of untalked about places in DFW like Oak Cliff nature preserve, the Trinity Audubon (which is really cool), Goat Island, Jefferson Ave, a lot of places in Fort Worth.
Feels like 90% of this sub lives in north dallas or the northern burbs but there's some nice stuff near 30.
springbluebell1@reddit
I was unaware of goat island. Thanks for the tip!
Responsible-Pass-657@reddit (OP)
Sooo true 🤣 Not gonna lie, i do like it lol
Csharp27@reddit
Hidden gems around here usually refer to restaurants for some reason.
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
Wow, it really is.
pboysen1310@reddit
For pizza? Bona at Lovers and Lemmon. Also have terrific Greek food. For a dive bar? Strangeways. Coolest draft beer selections in the city and there aren't any windows. It's Smiths themed on the inside.
Ruggerx24@reddit
Cosmos in Lakewood. A dive where everyone thinks pizza is their signature. But the low-key have the best Pho in Dallas Proper.
extraordinaryevents@reddit
Was hoping cosmo’s would not be mentioned on this thread
jesuisunvampir@reddit
It's not a hidden gem... last time I went everyone looked old, tired and with a drinking problem. Service is ass too
Ruggerx24@reddit

jhkayejr@reddit

subhawk737@reddit
Everyone talking about the pho. It's great, but the Cosmos gem is the kimchee cheese tater tots. Come on!
firstsecondanon@reddit
Reading this at lakewood landing lol
30cents2Transfers@reddit
Why would you share it!!!
18waystoThursday@reddit
But why does this place always smell like raw sewage every time I go there??
Artistic-Artichoke-4@reddit
That oxtail PHO!!!!!
darkpaladin@reddit
Dinner/drinks at Cosmos moving on to Lakewood Landing for a BLT and more drinks and finishing the night at Buzz Brews across the street was a staple of my 20's.
casiepierce@reddit
Speaking of Buzz Brew's, what's going in that building?

dirtyjordanones@reddit
Loved Cosmos until I saw a rat crawling up the fireplace wall and watched the owner try (and fail) to set traps to catch it. Hopefully they’ve taken care of this by now (was in 2022/23) but it still gives me the creeps.
MacRapalicious@reddit

Thank you very much guys, i'm adding a lot of these recs to my list.
For me, and for something outdoorsy, Cedar Ridge Preserve. It feels like you’ve left Dallas completely, but it’s just a short drive.. it is one of my favorites
LurksForTendies@reddit
While it's certainly a gem, it stretches the definition of hidden when the line of cars waiting to park stretches over a half mile on weekend mornings.
Current_Wrongdoer513@reddit
While true, I’m also shocked at how many people I talk to have no idea what Cedar Ridge is. Still, like you said, you gotta get there early or else the place is mobbed.
Virtual_Influence339@reddit
Would you suggest going just as early on weekdays? I work weekends, but would love to do this on a random Thursday.
Current_Wrongdoer513@reddit
I’ve never been on a weekday, but I’m sure it’s way less busy then.
Responsible-Pass-657@reddit (OP)
True. But my point when i say "hidden gem" is "a place that a few realises how nice it is" I think it is more about Opinions
abzagailz@reddit
We live three minutes away and love it! However, it does get packed. If you haven’t looked around, there’s quite a few other hiking options nearby! Big Cedar is right across the street and has loads of trails. Lester Lorch, Dogwood Canyon, Windmill Hill, and Kingswood Park are in the Cedar Hill/Duncanville area and all have trails that are beautiful and less crowded.
Responsible-Pass-657@reddit (OP)
Thank you for the insights.. I actually didn't know all of this about the area ! I'm into Biking, any specific trails you would suggest? If you have an idea Thanks again
abzagailz@reddit
Big Cedar would be my number one. It’s primarily biking trails that are hiking friendly. Twists, turns, and even an area with a little pump track hidden in the trees!
Shearay752@reddit
Look up DORBA (Dallas Off Road Bike Association). There's tons of trails. I personally like River Legacy in Arlington and I absolutely HATE Arlington. Arbor Hills in Plano and Erwin in McKinney are pretty nice too.
ToscasKiss32@reddit
Can one get there reasonably with DART (&/or foot or pedal power)?
ToscasKiss32@reddit
Just looked on iPhone map—mostly around 2 hrs each way, from Walnut Hill DART station. Might be worth it.
GoGoSoLo@reddit
I love it! It’s one of the only decent nature trails in the metroplex.
peepeight@reddit
Del’s burgers in Richardson!
Snobolski@reddit
That place is fire!
(too soon?)
peepeight@reddit
Haha it’s only funny because they are ok!
Mr1277@reddit
Well, I'm about to move out of town so here it goes.
Sushi - Masami - Richardson
Bar Food+ - The Whistling Pig - Richardson
Oysters & Seafood - Rex's Seafood - Dallas Farmers Market location on a weekday night.
BBQ & Craft Beer - Intrinsic - Garland
Fancy Pizza - Fortunate Son - Garland
Distillery & Food - Lockwood - Richardson (coming soon to Garland)
The point of the three above was go check out downtown Garland. They're doing great things and open container is legal on the square.
Wish I could put a burger place on here but I'm sick to death of "Smash Burgers" Where's the beef? Goodfriend (Dallas) used to have a hell of a burger menu.
Educational-Truck-21@reddit
Lived in Richardson for a few years and found they have a lot of hidden hole-in-the-wall restaurants that were very good.
Virtual_Influence339@reddit
Love a good Richardson recommendation
rando_in_dfw@reddit
During 2020, Garland was a life saver. Friends and I would meet there, grab beer and food to go from intrinsic and do the social distancing thing while still being able to hang out
Felt the closest to normal in a very weird time
Snobolski@reddit
Skip the crowd at Masami and have some Thai at Bangkok at Beltline, two doors down.
SadatayAllDamnDay@reddit
Yeah...Masami is great, but one annoying party can ruin the atmosphere fast.
Pepi119@reddit
That was my wife and I's go to whenever Masami was overflowing. Them and Tom Yum Thai further down Belt Line have some of the best drunken noodles in the metro.
LiveFreeFinn@reddit
Masami 100% amazing
MatyasDoktor@reddit
Masami is fantastic. Have a friend who knows the chefs and they are wonderful people too.

abzagailz@reddit
Sam’s is my favorite! The vibes are so good and the pizza is solid.
Crunk_Kookaburra@reddit
What do you think about Mo's in CH? I like it slightly better than Sams
But Sams has given me tons of free slices since im always alone and look sad.

The Maza Platter at G&G is my usual weekend lunch choice. Listed as an app, but gets the job done for lunch.

Csharp27@reddit
Ah shit I forgot coming up with great titles is my curse. Thanks bro😂.
extraordinaryevents@reddit
I made a comment like this once on a similar thread and it was probably my most downvoted comment ever. People saying I was the reason it could go out of business
ocultada@reddit
Yeah I've been here for over a decade, I dont care about the internet points. I'm going to speak my mind.
smokybbq90@reddit
Why are you scared of your favorite place getting some extra business during a terrible economic time for restaurants?
sun_nny28@reddit
Frankly, I don't think gatekeeping is the problem. The problem is that people do not have the disposable income to spend at their favorite local restaurant anymore. It's just less and less and more mindful of where the money is spent. Not because someone on reddit didn't want to share their favorite place.
smokybbq90@reddit
And the original comment will be downvoted into oblivion as well. It's a weird opinion to have. The restaurant economy is terrible right now and people don't want their favorite spots to get a little extra business.
smokybbq90@reddit
And then it goes out of business
Responsible-Pass-657@reddit (OP)
sorry; i don't agree!

The GOAT. Your neighborhood blues bar. Cheap booze, Karaoke, sad drunks, Lakewood richies that ask where you live. Leslie the bartender who takes no shit. Questionable pizza right next door. Pretty good crowd all in all
boopernickel@reddit
Mr. Sushi in Addison. I didn't go for years because the name made me think it was just an average shopping mall sushi place, but I happened to get invited by a friend a few years back and wow - it's a gem. Middle of the road pricing (not too high where it feels silly for the portion, but not low enough to put it in a cheap category), Japanese owned and ran by the same family for over 40 years, fantastic quality with regularly rotating specials flown in. Seriously, it's my favorite and I would take it over Uchi or Nobu any day (though I have enjoyed my meals greatly when I've been at both, I just like Mr Sushi better).
SadatayAllDamnDay@reddit
Mr Sushi is probably the best value for sushi in the area I've come across.
slappythebeaver@reddit
Tupinamba is an excellent Mexican restaurant at 75/Walnut Hill. When I moved to Dallas I lived in the apartments directly behind the restaurant. I’d walk down there a few times a week to eat… it’s so good. My girlfriend and I have a tradition where we eat here a few days before Christmas and then drive around looking at Christmas lights afterwards. We love about 25 miles away now but won’t let the tradition die.
Someone else mentioned Rex’s Seafood for which I’ll add two enthusiastic thumbs up. My girlfriend and I lived in the apartments across Turtle Creek (Renaissance at Preston Hollow) and waited with high hopes while this was being built out. I think we were there opening night and went many times afterwards. Haven’t been back since we moved to Carrollton a few years ago, but this is a can’t miss. My mouth is watering thinking about their lobster roll.
Anaya’s Seafood is also excellent. I’ve been to both the Plano & Frisco locations. It’s really good seafood at half the cost of Pappadeaux and I’d say a better meal overall with a less pretentious ambiance.
Steve Fields Steakhouse in Plano is incredible. We go there when we’re feeling fancy. It’s a little more expensive and is a little more dressed up than the other places I mentioned, but it’s damn good. Can’t go wrong with their pork chop or prime rib. Go for your birthday and they’ll bring you a massive piece of incredibly tasty chocolate cake for free.
Not sure any of those are hidden gems, but they’re really good meals at (mostly) affordable prices.
sun_nny28@reddit
Anayas Seafood can go suck a dick. The owner's stole the concept and recipes from a restaurant they used to work for.

Although not technically in Dallas, Time Rift Arcade. In the evenings they are are 21+. No rugrats to fuss with. The staff is over the top nice. I've got an unusual one, it's my favorite Rangers parking spot. It's the office building at 1250 E Copeland Rd in Arlington, and is a 20 minute walk to the new ballpark. They charge for big games, it was $15 the other day for the Astros, but usually there is not an attendant for regular games.
The beautiful part of this is it feeds directly onto the I-30E frontage road you can get outta dodge real quick. We parked in one of the official stadium lots a few weeks ago and while it was a nice easy walk in, it took 45 minutes to get out onto the highway after the game.
morgre7@reddit

La Duni, Poor Richard's, and basically the entire stretch of restaurants from Lovers to Lemmon west of the Tollway
Rakebleed@reddit
If we’re talking La Duni you have to shout Latin Deli. Started by the executive chef. Same quality (maybe better?) at an awesome price point. It’s the actual hidden gem in a very unassuming spot.
darkpaladin@reddit
I did not know that. I've said this before but I'll die on the hill that Latin Deli's chicken sandwich is one of the best sandwiches in DFW.
Veronica612@reddit
Latin Deli is very good, especially for the price.
smendyke@reddit
I thought it was East Hampton in the Crescent
deer_ylime@reddit
Oh is La Duni still around?!
Littlecat10@reddit
La Duni has a weird operation in the design district now; it’s mostly their bakery, with limited hours for the full menu. Back when it was on McKinney Ave, I wouldn’t call it under the radar. Neither is East Hampton for that matter. And the only Poor Richard’s I can find on Google is in Plano?
Responsible-Pass-657@reddit (OP)
Now that’s range .. fancy desserts, old-school eats, and NBA trade news over sandwiches. Only in Dallas haha
I’ve definitely gotta give that stretch more love.. Thanks a lot

I believe in the last (Wow, 7?) years since I moved from Uptown to Oak Cliff this has changed significantly but Griggs Park used to be an absolute treasure. It was almost always close to empty, even on absolutely beautiful Saturday afternoons.
I used to take a blanket, my dogs, a book and a water bottle full of wine, lay on the berm with the gorgeous view of Downtown for hours.

Nova in Bishop Arts. Cool mid-century vibe. Try the chicken fried pork loin. Chefs kiss.

I occasionally go out of my way to shop at Roosters or Elliots. Both have staff that know their products in and out. They've even done in store tutorials to help me with a basement bathroom project I had.

There was one of these off Lover's Lane I remember eating at when I was a child (30 years ago) & they had the best steak oh man they're still around?? Delicious!
Also, Two Guys From Italy.

I really love the grapevine bar, but a big part of that is i can always park and while it has a decent amount of people, it's not too much. Like I know I can go during the busiest time and I'll still find a spot to sit inside, and it's usually on a couch
captainn_chunk@reddit
Rip original location.
It’s no longer a dive in that new place.
SirUpper3587@reddit
You talking about the Grapevine in Oak Lawn? I thought it closed down recently?
smokybbq90@reddit
It moved
naked_avenger@reddit
That location did, but they moved to another location a year or so ago. Still has the same vibe and bball court.
