Can someone explain the Tampico Motel?

I see a lot of “IYKYK” comments about the Tampico Motel. Looking at it on Google streetview, it definitely looks shady, but I would like to know the history/rumors/gossip from some Dallas natives.

I just know my parents (born in the 40s in Dallas) used to joke about the Como Motel on Central. Called it No-Tell Motel.
FlatulentGnostic@reddit
There was also a famous murder involving infidelity at the Como ... well, famous for 15 minutes. There was a dark joke going around afterwards about not being allowed to eat Candy at the Como. Another IYKYK.

Candy Montgomery? Yeah that was W I L D

My parents worked at a the Dallas TI plant not far from there. Said it was a very popular spot for lunchtime coworker meetups and reportedly it had hourly lunch rates.
BigJTex82@reddit
I was stabbed there once

I am 52 - I had a party there when I was 17, and it was sooooo shady then - hookers, dealers, just bad. I can’t imagine it has gotten better.

Hey, I was at the Tampico 35 years ago. I parked my van there while I was working on the air conditioner in a room. You must be the a$$wipe that ran into my van. Thanks for nothing. LOL
AnotherAnonymousA@reddit
35yrs ago means almost all statues of limitation have expired, so...what happened at your party?!?

Asking the important questions

Well, we bought some drugs from the drug dealer, drank a lot of Strawberry Hill, and as the night went on the residents of the hotel started to congregate around our door. One of the hookers kept knocking on the window, and we freaked out after a while (we had also brought our own LSD). I got in my car to leave, and as I walked to my car, a hooker walked along with me saying stuff like “I bet that white dick is so clean, lemme see, baby” and “come on, I know you a boy, we will make you a man - I’ll grab my girlfriend”
I hopped in my car (a blue bug) and reversed it and gunned my way out of there - hitting a van with my passenger taillight and smashing the light and denting my bumper. Someone started yelling at me and I peeled out of there. I actually had a spare taillight in my frunk, so I stopped on the way home and smashed it. When I got home i parked the wrong way on the street (broken taillight out) and sprinkled the broken parts around the fender. I went in and went to bed, knowing I would get an “I told you so” from my dad for parking the wrong way.
I got away with it, and he took me to the junkyard that day and we bought a full set of rear fenders and lights for my car - they were orange, and the car was blue, so it kind of looked cool.
That’s my Tampico story

anyone else get scared this was a tree fiddy for a second lol.
Hussar85@reddit
This is the kind of story I come to Reddit for. Thank you.

Now that is certainly worth a IYKYK. Great story.
JPhi1618@reddit
Now I’m curious- did anyone call it a frunk back then, or is that a modern term? (Great story btw)
custermustache@reddit
I did.

I used to live near by, it has a shady reputation. Since 2010 there have been a couple of murders and a fatal fire.
I understand that the folks who own Ruibal’s - the plant nursery next door - have tried to buy it but the motel owner doesn’t want to sell. It’s been a troublesome neighbor for them to have.
When I first moved to Dallas it was pink, then sea green, but its exterior paint job is a little more subdued these days.
I’d love it if it became a cool neighborhood hotel - like The Belmont once was for West Dallas and Oak Cliff.

This sounds like a classic case of IYDKYDK

Sign uses the same font that Han Gil used; it's like the official Shady Motel Font

In 2005 after road trip tired and needed sleep. Took room. Shady but no street walking or dealer presence. It was dawn. Turned on tv no hbo but porn was playing multiple channels . I could not sleep , I felt millions of bedbugs eyeing me. I just took off and slept In car. Desk clerk was polite
Glad_Celebration4475@reddit
I had a friend who lived in those apartments across the street.
He said it was a hooker hotel.
Hozay_La15@reddit
Exactly this.
AbueloOdin@reddit
This is why I hate the "IYKYK" crap. No. I don't know. So why don't you freaking tell me!!
It_Has_All_Been_Done@reddit
Speaking to the last 15 years, there have been multiple homicides, including one that involved arson, I believe.
Ok_Annual_2630@reddit
The Google reviews are great! “This place is haunted.” “This place has bedbugs.” “This place is haunted and has bedbugs.”
foppishmanabouttown@reddit
I used to live on Coronado, so I drove past it almost everyday. It’s been sketchy since 2008, but you’ll see some decent cars parked there. You should read some of the reviews online. Not horrible and kind of funny.
Dick_Lazer@reddit
I lived close to it and shot some videos of it about a year and a half ago. Didn't seem like much going on tbh, but I wasn't going inside the rooms.
Appropriate_Zombie21@reddit
Do they still have valet service?😛
Matador972@reddit
Has been around for decades. And has been allegedly sketchy the entire time. Specifics? I have never heard of any. It seems really out of place on that stretch of road.
noncongruent@reddit
That road is State Highway 78, it used to be a main travel and commercial route between Dallas and parts of Oklahoma. US 75 has largely replaced it in the last century. The road itself dates back to the 1920s. Busy highways just outside of city centers are great places for hotels.

Stayed there the other night for pregaming before walking over to The Lodge. Seemed fine.
The close vicinity to strip club city makes me suspect it's probably used for illicit activities
dchirs@reddit
You likely stayed at the Buzen Suites.
McKinneyCumsultants@reddit
No, it was Tropicana. My bad 🤣
crblack24@reddit
Interesting post and comment history here... you'd think this wouldn't be a mistake they made.
Dragonicity@reddit
Think you may be mixing up names. Tampico Motel is over by Grand in Whiterock area and like over 10 miles from The Lodge.
McKinneyCumsultants@reddit
O yeah, my bad. That was Tropicana
OddS0cks@reddit
Surprised it’s still there considering the location and value of that land
crblack24@reddit
It is shady. An eye-sore for the neighborhood.
