1980 Ferrari Pinin by Pininfarina

1980 Ferrari Pinin by Pininfarina • A four-door Ferrari that didn’t make it, the Pinin celebrated Pininfarina’s 50th birthday and was powered by the 5-liter flat 12 from the 512 Berlinetta Boxer. Shown at the Turin Motor Show, the positive reaction to the concept precipitated rumors that it might make it into Ferrari’s showrooms, though it never did.

The front looks like a person with a leafblower blowing in their face; it reminds me of a Chrysler Concorde.

This car being from 1980 is wild. I could buy 1988, it looks very 1988, but if it debuted in 1980 that means there’s a very good chance it was technically designed in the ‘70s, and pretty much every aspect of the design philosophy would have been a decade ahead of its time.
And I know that part of that is that I’m American. Composite headlights didn’t become a thing here until the mid ‘80s and didn’t become universal until the ‘90s. And boy were the American car industry’s first attempts at those ugly and awkward-looking. And of course aerodynamics started to become a consideration in a lot of European design in the ‘70s while America didn’t really start experimenting with that until the ‘80s, and again it didn’t become the norm until the ‘90s. But even compared to European cars from 1980 that already had composite headlights and smooth aerodynamic touches this car looks wildly ahead of its time.
Personally I don’t really like it. I mean obviously it’s better than any designs from the 2020s, but when discussing what looks “good” it’s best to just ignore the 21st century altogether, otherwise it throws off the curve and compared to anything made in the past 30 years an Edsel is beautiful and elegant. Compared to cars from the 1970s and 1980s it just doesn’t do it for me, the front end is impressively ahead of its time but really ugly and the overall proportions aren’t quite right. I mean they’re not far off from the proportions of the 400, but that’s a grand tourer, not a sedan. In my mind I think I’m comparing it to either a luxury car like a Mercedes S-Class or a sleek and futuristic sport sedan like the Lagonda, whereas the overall shape of this car gives off early ‘90s midsize commuter sedan vibes.
But the interesting part is why I don’t like: because it’s so generic and bland. But again, the impressive part of this car is that it’s from 1980. It wouldn’t have been generic or bland when designed, it would have been the only thing ever dreamed up that looked anything remotely like it. That’s kind of crazy to think about. It looks like a lazy and unimaginative copy of cars that came ten years later. The front end looks like a copy of the later Cadillac Cimmaron and the overall shape reminds me of the ‘90s Seville (or countless other ‘90s sedans). The tail lights scream Cadillac Allante, which makes sense because that car was also designed by Pininfarina and the thing about Italian design houses is that they don’t design you a Ferrari or a Cadillac, they design you a Pininfarina or an Italdesign or a Bertone, so their designs for different brands often end up looking similar to their current house style. But we keep coming back to the 1980 thing, this design predates the Allante by almost a decade so it was a very early attempt at that translucent tail light treatment that was so trendy in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. And the “concept car” roofline with those flush side windows that can’t roll down and glass-covered pillars was super trendy in the late ‘80s well into the 2000s (you still occasionally see concept cars like that nowadays) but this has to be the earliest example I’ve ever seen.
It makes me wonder just how well known and influential this car was. I know I’ve seen it before, although I never knew the year was so early, but was this a super popular and well known car in the early ‘80s? Did it heavily influence all those later cars that it looks like a bland knockoff of? Or was it just ahead of its time, a minor blip on car enthusiasts radar that didn’t influence much but foresaw so many future design trends? I guess regardless of whether this particular car was influential Pininfarina definitely was, and like I said they did like to reuse a lot of design themes so even if this was one of the earliest examples of all those design cues Pininfarina probably kept reusing many of them throughout the ‘80s on other designs.

Well at least I know where the Vauxhall Opel Senator got it's face now.
RasilBathbone@reddit
We didn't get this because a 4 door sedan wasn't "Ferrari" enough. And now they're selling SUVs, and calling it "the result of 75 years of leading-edge research and the culmination of Ferrari's strategy since its beginning."
ZeePirate@reddit
I think it’s a nice looking car. But it’s not a nice looking Ferrari
Lukeeeee@reddit
What does this even mean
ZeePirate@reddit
It doesn’t look like your typical Ferrari. So I don’t think it’s a good looking Ferrari.
It’s overall a nice looking car but just not “on brand”
Lukeeeee@reddit
Honestly didn't think ferrari had a consistent language to interpret that way. In comparison to Lamborghini or Porsche i guess
IlluminatedPickle@reddit
Tbh, I saw this and said out loud "The fuck?" because it doesn't look like a Ferrari at all to me.
RasilBathbone@reddit
Have you ever seen a 412? Because it "doesn't look like a Ferrari" either.
Clear-Ad-9405@reddit
Opel Senator front was clearly inspired by this one
Roboomer@reddit
Are those Cadillac alliante taillights?
Haluux@reddit
We are worse off for this not being produced. What an absolutely beautiful car.
wasabi1787@reddit
Disagree
Haluux@reddit
Please elaborate.
wasabi1787@reddit
I don't like it. Looks are inherently subjective
MarcusBondi@reddit
Have you seen a 400 in real life? They are very different than in pictures. Very low wide and tapered; sensational looking 4 seater.
wasabi1787@reddit
That's a better looking car
Haluux@reddit
Fair enough. What is it you don't like?
wasabi1787@reddit
The grill gets a bit too close to an angular 80s Cadillac for my taste. The lines are a bit generic. Back end is okay tho
Haluux@reddit
I see what you mean. I think for me, its simplicity is more, but as you say, style is subjective.
butterfunke@reddit
But the Toyota Crown does exist
sexarseshortage@reddit
At the time Ferrari were completely against producing a sedan. It would have gone against everything they stood for as a brand.
They were dragged kicking and screaming into the four seater market with the fxx. The new SUV is something they said they would never make.
JackTasticSAM@reddit
I’m on board with this take. I love it.
shwiss@reddit
At least we got the 400i. Which I think is an overall prettier car.
Pudim_Abestado@reddit
Looks like a random car from the 90s
oily76@reddit
Seeing a bit of the Alfa 164 in that.
Sad_Thought_4642@reddit
Front reminds me of an Opel Senator.
oily76@reddit
Yes, the curved grille!
the_jeby@reddit
Yeah, Pininfarina reused part of the concepts in the Alfa
SimonHJohansen@reddit
So THAT is why it looked so familiar...
lasskinn@reddit
Its very forward looking.
Redlion444@reddit
Looks too much like a Ford Crown Vic.
PsychologySpecific16@reddit
Ah yes a Vauxhall Senetor that some body squashed
nd4spd1919@reddit
I mean, its a fine looking 80's sedan I guess, but it doesn't scream 'Ferrari' to me. If you told me this was a late 80's concept for an updated Cadillac de Ville, I'd believe you.
MGPS@reddit
That thing is sweeet
Competitive_Sell2177@reddit
I'll take it..where do I sign?
coyotepickeldbob@reddit
I want it, it's giving cadillac allante vibes which I love but I want ut
SameArtichoke8913@reddit
Well, at least the world got the Bitter SC Sedan from Germany... ;-)
Anach@reddit
That's a nice looking sedan, but I feel when they designed it, they reached the rear, and gave up. It needs twin round tail lights.
guisar@reddit
Is that a 400? Only Ferrari I ever actually wanted....
cat_prophecy@reddit
I'm honestly surprised this wasn't a Giorgetto Giugiaro or Italdesign work.
CodewortSchinken@reddit
The front must have served as an inspiration for the Opel Senator B.
skeptical-speculator@reddit
do something different with the grille, it looks like a chrysler 300C in a bad way: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chrysler_300C_.jpg

Leonardo Fioravanti (designed this and a bunch of other 80s/90s Ferraris) speculated that Ferrari's resistance to producing the car was due to the production quality of any resultant vehicle.
"Faults" were accepted in sporting cars, but with the Pinin Ferrari would have been competing against the quality of experienced luxury sedan manufacturers, including BMW & Mercedes.
The interior is pretty sweet.
That split-level dash continuing on to the doors is a pretty dope touch, and I've seen the cockpit instrument panel elsewhere, but this one actually looks good.
Would have been interesting to see what the market was for a 4-door Ferrari in the 80s.
We know now with the success of the PuroSUV that people would buy anything with that 🐎 on it.
winchester_mcsweet@reddit
Looks like the bridge of the Enterprise D from star trek

Saw that and thought it was the 2000 SUX from the original Robocop movie.

Is it just me, or are the wheel spokes twisted like propellers? If so, this reminds me of an amphibious spy car.

Looks like they ended up using a similar taillight design on the Cadillac Allante.
