Which country would you rather live in?

Australia🇭🇲 or New Zealand🇳🇿? Think about everything. Distance, wages, lifestyle etc.
Mikeytee1000@reddit
Spain, planning to retire there in about 8 year’s time
Breakwaterbot@reddit
Where you looking at? My folks have a place about 10 miles south of Torrevieja and love it. They'll be moving out there full time soon. I fully intend to do the same in about 20 years time.
Mikeytee1000@reddit
Maybe Alicante or Malaga area and it could be as soon as 6 years time.
Fair-Interest4930@reddit
Whats the visa process nowadays?
Mikeytee1000@reddit
I’ll need to obtain a Non Lucrative Visa annually which means you can’t work and prove you have €32,000 per year to live on and then you pay their taxes which are higher than ours, but the cost of living is cheaper and there is no council tax, well there is but it’s about €200 a year.
Fair-Interest4930@reddit
Thanks for that. Might see you put there in 15 years time 😁
Fair-Interest4930@reddit
*out
BlackJackKetchum@reddit
South Island NZ or Tasmania. Similar-ish climate to here and rather less crowded.
Fair-Interest4930@reddit
You are looking for a similar climate????
coffeewalnut08@reddit
Yes. Our climate is great.
carolethechiropodist@reddit
crazy! Now lived half my life in Sydney, by the beach. Perfect weather 8 months a year, 3 months too hot, 1 month cool. New Zealand is cold as Scotland in the south. Tasmania is Somerset. Sydney is Barcelona, Valencia.
valoigib@reddit
Sydney has double the rainfall of London and is definitely not a Mediterranean climate.
Status_Accident_2819@reddit
Yeah because sydney gets a solid 2 weeks of non-stop rain in the winter the rest of the time it's sunny. It's more California climate wise than Mediterranean. (Have lived in both and the UK)
carolethechiropodist@reddit
Thanks for the clarification, and also the rain is not freezing as in London. A tepid shower on full power. It's pouring now. But I went swimming.
BlackJackKetchum@reddit
Since my chance of getting residency in either place is roughly zero, this is all very abstract. Anyway, I'm not very good with the heat and I rather like the temperate English climate.
edison9696@reddit
Not everyone likes very hot and dry weather.
St2Crank@reddit
I agree with them, not about hot weather.
Fair-Interest4930@reddit
Each to their own. The climate of UK is probably the number one of only a couple of reasons i’d want to leave. Definately planning to be outside of UK for every winter in retirement.
sparklybeast@reddit
Ideally I'd be looking for a colder climate, but NZ is closer to ideal than Aus which is WAY too hot.
coffeewalnut08@reddit
New Zealand. Prefer the climate and geography there, it would be more familiar coming from England
I’d also appreciate the quiet lifestyle and how everything is closer by being a smaller country.
Wages in NZ don’t sound great but if everything else is decent then I’ll put up with it.
Shitelark@reddit
Did an asteroid hit us or something?
SneakyCroc@reddit
I've lived on three continents, including time in Australia. I'm happiest, and will from here remain in, the UK.
Zr0w3n00@reddit
Probably better to ask on NZ and Australia subs. I’d say 95% of people here haven’t been to either, let alone know what it’s like to live in them.
BrotherDesperate3959@reddit (OP)
But make a guess
zka_75@reddit
NZ.. less scary creatures (and I'm not just talking about Australians lol).
BrotherDesperate3959@reddit (OP)
But new zealand is near to australia. If there are spiders in Aus, there are spiders in new zealand too😄
ChrisRiley_42@reddit
"Non lethal creatures of Australia" is a pamphlet, not a book... all it says is "Some of the sheep, we think...."
zka_75@reddit
I don't think that's how it works 😆 They need a certain climate.
eluuu@reddit
no
rye-ten@reddit
Wouldn't even know how to answer. Have no knowledge of either
minadequate@reddit
Having lived in far flung countries there is absolutely no chance anyone will visit me if they have to take more multiple flights to get there… and I’m not talking 3 flights to get to Europe. NZ has a better sense of humour.
I might accept Auckland otherwise I’d really not be up for either (as someone who actually had to consider a move to Dunedin not that long ago).

MakoDrifter@reddit
Neither. I want to live in China :(
Electrical-Curve6898@reddit
America
MakoDrifter@reddit
What state?
LudicrousPlatypus@reddit
Honestly, I would prefer New Zealand. (I’ve never been). However, I’ve heard Australia has many more jobs and opportunities.
xneurianx@reddit
Never been to either, but on paper everything about NZ seems better suited to me.
scrotalsac69@reddit
Honestly, neither. Both are so far away from family. Aus is great to visit but I really don't like the idea of having to fly 5 hours plus just to get out of the country and into a different culture.
Not be to nz but have kiwi friends who prefer it here and don't intend on going back. I understand their reasons and it would be the same for me
Mama_Mush@reddit
Pretty sure the minerals, liquids, birds, and beasties in Aus want to usher you into the next life so I'd go for NZ.....
Maximum_Scientist_85@reddit
Yep - I'd prefer the "stay in the UK" option, but of thse 2 I think NZ is a less hostile environment in terms of climate and things that could kill me.
AdRealistic4984@reddit
I’m pretty sure NZ has a worse wage/rent cost of living crisis than the UK — and no jobs — whereas Australia you can can actually make money
thesaharadesert@reddit
That’s all well and good until you find yourself being hunted down by a certain Sackville-Baggins, intent on relieving you of all your teaspoons.
PossibleGlad7290@reddit
Even with all its faults, I’d choose the United States in a heartbeat.
Willywonka5725@reddit
Honestly either, probably pick Australia because Id like the banter it would bring.
hooligan_bulldog_18@reddit
I've been to Oz & never again. Too far away from civilisation. I feel like its perfect if you're older / near retirement or a young outdoor adrenaline enthusiast - besides that, the UK is better thanks to its location.
wtf_idk_maybecheese@reddit
Too far from civilisation? You do realise there are cities in Australia right? Its not all outback
hooligan_bulldog_18@reddit
Yea, mate, I travelled while there. It's isolated AF from the rest of civilisation.
Kent_biker@reddit
I almost emigrated to NZ after a 6 week holiday there and absolutely loved it, the scenery, the people and the way of life. Unfortunately there were too many barriers to cross, not least that I was too old (by a year) to get a work visa. 😐
SaluteMaestro@reddit
Neither
G01ngDutch@reddit
New Zealand, it’s ridiculously beautiful. I don’t care if it’s boring. And the people are just the best. Never met a Kiwi I didn’t like. Aussies are often a lot of fun, but I’ve met some very racist and misogynist ones too.
amanset@reddit
New Zealand because in Australia everything is trying to kill you.
BrotherDesperate3959@reddit (OP)
But they are near so if there are spiders in aus there are spiders in nz too...
importantmaps2@reddit
I've always liked the idea of buying a ranch and keeping horses somewhere in maybe Canada.
Or moving to Amsterdam just cos'
NewCarob9279@reddit
New Zealand
Forest_Ancestor_7@reddit
Neither. Never had any desire to go to either one. So far away from home.
JCDU@reddit
NZ is like a more relaxed Britain or a less depressing version of Wales, Aus is a sweltering place where everything wants to kill you and they're nowhere near as relaxed as their image suggests.
DropDeadDigsy@reddit
New Zealand on a farm
WeRW2020@reddit
Ideally neither, but New Zealand looks safest in the event of World War 3
Professional-Day6965@reddit
New Zealand or Canada for language purposes but far too far from the UK to pop back.
Scandinavia & the Netherlands would be good, but I'd want to learn the language.
I'll split the difference and pick the UK
EeveeTheFuture@reddit
Germany. I've always wanted to visit but I've not yet had the opportunity. My wife has been to Germany and she loved it.
Ergophobe470@reddit
Not been to either (yet), but if I had to choose I'd say New Zealand. It's not as hot and there are less snakes and spiders.
BrotherDesperate3959@reddit (OP)
But there are spiders in new zealand too. Because australia is very near to new zealand😄
Breakwaterbot@reddit
Great to see how many people here are answering the question 😂
Southernbeekeeper@reddit
My friend lives in New Zealand and it looks great but the lack of culture would put me off. Australia probably has more going for it in terms of things to do bit I think if I was to mive there I would be going to get away from everything.
DevelopmentLow214@reddit
Depends on your attitude to possums. If you like them, live in Australia where they are a protected species. If you dislike them, you may prefer to live in New Zealand where they are a pest and you are encouraged to run over them and squash them.
Maximum_Scientist_85@reddit
This is the perfect answer :)
dph1953@reddit
Any Scandinavian country, preferably Denmark. Consistently tops the polls as the happiest country, has a fare tax system that supports generous social care.
mearnsgeek@reddit
Norway or Denmark
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit
Australia. Just to see Root get a thousand runs later this year 😉
OkRace5965@reddit
Either Italy or Spain
edison9696@reddit
I spent a fair bit of time travelling in both countries quite a long time ago whilst in my 20s.
Admittedly things have probably changed a fair bit since but my overall impression was Australia was quite similar to parts of the USA whereas NZ felt a lot more like the UK.
A lot might depend on how old you are. I can imagine younger Brits would probably prefer Australia due to the economic and cultural lure of cities like Sydney and Melbourne plus the whole beach culture and better weather.
Personally I preferred NZ - people were friendlier, there wasn't the casual and not so casual racism that I experienced in Australia and I wouldn't fancy living in a country as hot as Australia.
luffy8519@reddit
I would say NZ, I've never been but it feels as though the culture is similar to the UK, but more chilled out.
QuirkyImage@reddit
I don’t know so many countries have issues these days compared to when I was younger thinking about this.
poshbakerloo@reddit
If I had to live in Europe I'd pick Spain as I love the country, such a nice culture, stunning landscapes etc. Outside of Europe it would be Eastern Canada or NE USA.
AdEmbarrassed3066@reddit
Why are you asking? You've been asking about Czechs, Dutch and Ethiopians moving to Australia in other threads... what are you trying to learn?
Bellimars@reddit
Sweden or Denmark.
nasted@reddit
Neither thanks. I’d go to Canada.
RobbieRobbieRobbie02@reddit
New Zealand has a more similar climate to ours so would be easier to adapt to
plimso13@reddit
The distance between the UK and Australia or NZ is negligible. Wages/costs are generally better in Aus, lifestyle is subjective. What do you want?
Trick_Highlight6567@reddit
I currently live in Australia and would not consider moving to NZ. I already find Australia to isolated, NZ is just too far from anything to be a place I could put down roots.
