Early plastic kit build was an RF-101, and saw a RCAF Voodoo at St. Louis, and it was well washed and waxed! Always liked the aircraft!

Man, the tuner scene has gotten outrageous with their rear spoilers…

Google AI lied to me and told me they were restoring a Voodoo in Abbotsford. I got pretty excited I had never seen one fly and wondered if any were air worthy. Turns out it was an April Fools joke.
Gg AI.

I wonder why there aren’t any flight capable F-101s left? There’s a large number of survivors
There’s airworthy phantoms in private hands so it can’t imagine it could be some sort of legal prohibition
quietflyr@reddit
The Jet Aircraft Museum in London Ontario has a CF-101 Voodoo, and the guy giving the tour told me they plan to restore it to airworthiness...
... But I walked around it and a cursory look showed massive amounts of corrosion on all kinds of structural components, to the point I became a little uneasy being underneath it. I can't imagine what they would find when opening it up. So I think they're a little delusional.

Probably a mix of things. The two biggest customers for the J57 engine, the B-52 and KC-135, were both quick to abandon the engine in favor of the TF-33. So there was never a big stockpile to draw from for parts if the 101 ever moved into the hands of private collectors. It's also a pretty big aircraft compared to the more popular Saber.
Rich_Razzmatazz_112@reddit
It could also be that the Voodoo was an underpowered, unloved airframe that's still known mostly as a gate guard. _I_think they're cool and kinda handsome. History hasn't been as kind.

Best looking Century series. Not loved enough to have a flier…

I've always liked the delta dagger and starfighters better. The dagger they built more of than the voodoo and no flies are left sadly.
At least they built so many starfighters and they stayed in service so long several have survived.
None of them are as sexy as the B-58 though. If I was ultra rich I'd have a copy made as my private jet lol.
Professor_Smartax@reddit
The starfighter looks like a missile with a canopy as an afterthought.
The Delta Dagger always looked sharp to me too--and I suspect it was the inspiration for the Vipers in Battlestar Galactica.
Apexnanoman@reddit
There is a book by a guy named Ben Rich that talks about the starfighter in one chapter. Ran the Skunk works at one point.
Absolutely amazing book if you haven't read it and like the golden age of American jet fighters.
The damn thing was designed by a small team in like 6 months. From design to first flight was barely 24 months. Always said if I hit the lotta I would buy one of those and a Mars flying boat.
Erikrtheread@reddit
That book is full of outlandish concept->insane time frame->flying prototype stories, such a good read.
Apexnanoman@reddit
Yeah it's a great book. And Kelly Johnson was a genius madman.
flightist@reddit
The two seat Bs were lookers, the single seat variants all have odd looking proportions to me.
Apexnanoman@reddit
Could push up close to mach 2. Wasn't that under powered. But the design was a stopgap until the 102 came along.
Lot of compromises and such from what I understand.
Professor_Smartax@reddit
Wasn't the 102 slower?
Apexnanoman@reddit
Yup. The 101 had plenty of power. It just wasn't as maneuverable from what I understand. Someone who is much more of an expert will probably tell me I'm an idiot but that's fine lol.
Professor_Smartax@reddit
When I was a kid in Portland, Oregon, they were the interceptor stationed at the ANG base until I was in high school. It seemed like it could go pretty fast at takeoff.
Diogenes256@reddit
Eh, 2 x 17k lb thrust in afterburner. I don’t think it would feel slow.
Sickinmytechchunk@reddit
probably a mixture of things: only 800 built, retired in the early 70s, maintainers are probably well into their 80s now and as another commenter said it wasn't a loved aircraft like the F100 or F4. Could even be something similar to the English Electric Lightning which won't get air worthiness certificates because it's electric systems aren't safe yet lots of surviving air frames have tons of hours left on them.
Plump_Apparatus@reddit
There is at least one Voodoo in private hands looking at wiki, and I'd imagine more if searched around. The type was retired from service across the board over 40 years ago.
The Phantom is still in service in Greece, Turkey, and Iran. It was only recently retired from South Korean and Japanese service. It was still flying for the US around a decade ago as the QF-4 target drone until the last of them were expended. Less than a thousand Voodoos were built, over five thousand Phantoms were built.
Despite those differences there is a single Phantom in private hands that is flyable.
Starfighters International, who flies F-104s, was in the news recently for attempting to acquire ex-South Korea Phantoms. If anything actually happens there who knows.

I can't see anything. Must be a ghost of some kind.

This was my first model aircraft as a kid
iamalsobrad@reddit
Introduced in the late 50s and was a a contemporary of the MiG-21 and the Blackburn Buccaneer.
It's amazing to think this was only 40 years since WW1 where aircraft such as this were in service.

Too close for missiles, switching to guns.
Radioactive_Tuber57@reddit
I imprinted on these as a little kid in the Kate 50’s. We lived off the departure end of an Air Force base when I was 4. Dad and I’d run out into the back yard and watch them climb out on afterburners. Feel it in your bones kind of roar. ❤️👍😎
BrianWantsTruth@reddit
My dad had a model Voodoo back in the 80s, I think it was the first plane I knew by name. A lot of nostalgia there.
Notchersfireroad@reddit
A Voodoo getting saved?! It's the twin seater with the t tail and big motors too.
