Okay, be honest. How many times are you getting up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom?

Used to be up once or twice a night, then I started mouth taping at night. Game changer. I need to pee far less often and my sleep is better according to my tracker. Apparently breathing through your nostrils modulates the hormone that controls diuresis. Look it up!
McBernes@reddit
I'm 51, I never have to get up at night to use the bathroom.
Weekly_Push2499@reddit
I used to get up 3–4 times every night and thought it was just ‘normal aging.’ What surprised me was that small evening habits (like timing water, salty foods, and screen use) made a huge difference. I actually wrote everything down in a little nightly log because I kept forgetting what worked — funny enough, some people found it useful too.

I just gotta say, I've gone at least a year without having to. Read this post last night and sure enough about 2am I had to get up and pee like a racehorse. Thanks for that, OP.

Illustrious-Low3948@reddit
Have you ever been tested for diabetes? 25-30 pees a day is not normal.

Since I basically stopped drinking beer later at night, basically never. Just sucks I can't exercise in the evenings anymore (I drink A LOT of water when I exercise).
Any-Concentrate-1922@reddit
Maybe once in a night, but not every night. I used to have a dream that I was in a building trying to find a bathroom and then wake up and have to pee. My brain is very literal, I guess. I had to pee, so it conjured a dream that I had to pee. I had a fear that I'd find a bathroom in the dream and wet the bed!
Calm-Tree-1369@reddit
Between 1 and 3. I drink a lot of water in the evenings after work instead of binge-eating like I used to, so it's to be expected. I've had tests and there's nothing medically wrong with me.
twobootsranch@reddit
Once at least, sometimes twice.
gatorsmash14@reddit
I woke up 4 times to use the bathroom last night, doctor did all the tests and they can't find anything wrong with me. I stop drinking and liquid 4 to 5 hours before bed, and when I wake to pee throughout the night it's clear and like I have held it for hours.
I have a specialist appointment with internal medicine in December 😮💨
OllieFromCairo@reddit
Do you work a desk job?
gatorsmash14@reddit

OllieFromCairo@reddit
You may have fluid pooling in your lower body. Have your tests been with a urologist? If not, that would be worth doing.
gatorsmash14@reddit
I have not seen a urologist yet, my family doc suggested internal medicine before a urologist.
I have tried compression socks, they make no difference. Thanks for the comment though! I'm so burnt out because I have not a full night's sleep in months.
OllieFromCairo@reddit
I had the same problem. A urologist helped me get it under control, which is why I ask. I wish you the best.

I’m 85% convinced I have sleep apnea. Any advice on how to get tested/diagnosed?
small___potatoes@reddit
Just mention you’d like to be tested for sleep apnea at your next physical or family dr appt. For me, I just wore a monitor overnight at home. Didn’t have to do the sleep study somewhere else.
I found out I was average 27 “arousals” per hour (not the good kind). After CPAP I’m averaging 0.7 per hour. Sleeping much better.
Objective-Dust4795@reddit
I did the at home test. And showed I had mild. I got a dental device and it fixed my snoring and sleep apnea. I really did not want a CPAP and I’m in the lucky few who can use the dental device to fix mine.
ThePicassoGiraffe@reddit
My spouse has one of these (and it sure does work!) but he complains about jaw pain, do you get that too?
Objective-Dust4795@reddit
I did and the dr told me to try without rubber bands. It still works and my pain is more of an annoyance than the previous pain for the entire morning.

If I force myself to have a partched mouth, maybe twice (once an hour after I fall asleep and again around 5am, sometimes). If I get even the slightest half of an ounce of water to wet my whistle, then I'll have to pee 90m later like clockwork.
throwback842@reddit
For the first time in my life I’m hydrating properly. At least a gallon of filtered water a day, plus tea (quit coffee and sodas). I get up to use the bathroom on average 2-3 times per night.
neogrinch@reddit
That's about how much I drink a day as well. I've always drink a lot, though even when younger. Always found it strange that some people have to force themslves to drink enough! my pee always has SOME light tinge of yellow in it, so i'm clearly not overhydrating (completely clear pee).
PilotC150@reddit
That’s not normal. Might wanna ask your doctor about that.
mnfimo@reddit
I dunno why you’re getting downvoted. Multiple times a night is not normal and you should definitely go to a doctor. Might be a sign of diabetes
JamesMattDillon@reddit
Because everyone's body is different. 2-3 times is okay according to their doctor. And I don't see where they asked for anyone's input
mnfimo@reddit
No, it’s not normal, you don’t need to defend that person, no one was being mean or rude.
JamesMattDillon@reddit
Well since my doctor said the same thing, after seeing the x-rays and everything. They did say if I have to go more then that, to go back. But since you know more than my doctor about my lab resultsand my body, go off I guess
mnfimo@reddit
Where did I claim to know more than your doctor? I’ve not said anything other than waking up to pee 2-3 times is not normal, go see a fucking doctor. I’m saying this from experience. Why are you so bent out of shape on this?
Healthy-Neat-2989@reddit
Yeah, they specifically asked for output, not input. 💦
WinterYak1933@reddit
Is that the same as diabeetus??
Dear-Union-44@reddit
or a prostate issue.
Ambitious_Jelly8783@reddit
Question. What if you drink 1 galon of unfiltered water?
Masterweedo@reddit
WinterYak1933@reddit
eLishus@reddit
Good for you getting proper hydration. I drink about a gallon a day, too, so I’m usually up 1-2x/night. However, I’ve noticed that what I eat for dinner can heavily impact that. If I have a big meal, or something that’s heavy on meat and salt (like a gyro), then I get incredibly dehydrated and need to drink more during the night. I’m less getting up to pee than I am getting up to hydrate. But because I’m drinking more water through the night, definitely peeing more. This is why I’ve found vegetarian meals a little more appealing as I age: they’re easier to digest and I tend to sleep better.
Ok_Kaleidoscope_6442@reddit
So don’t quit coffee and sodas is what I’m hearing
JamesMattDillon@reddit
Don't you just love how they do that. They know more about your body, then your own doctor. Like you, I also go up to 3 times a night and my doctor said the same thing
neogrinch@reddit
I started CPAP therapy this year for sleep apnea. I went once or twice a night before that. Now I still occassionally wake up to pee, but I actually sleep through the night quite often nowadays. I thought it was normal ot wake up once or twice to go to restroom, but apparently, its not.
Entangled-again@reddit
Twice on average. I watch a lot of baseball and jeopardy and see ads suggesting I may have a condition called benign prostate enlargement.
Nope. Just a lady who drinks too much water.
OutcomeLegitimate618@reddit
😂 I pee a lot at night, but every time I get up, I drink more water because I am always thirsty, so I wake up 1-2 hours again. Rinse and repeat, but I refuse to stay thirsty. I thought maybe it's a diabetes thing, but I had my fasting blood test and my doctor said nope.
Entangled-again@reddit
I do this too! I was tested for diabetes a ton in my twenties but apparently it's a really minor syndrome that makes my eyes and mouth dry.
OutcomeLegitimate618@reddit
My eyes are dry when I wake up too! I wonder if I have the same.

Happy_dancer1982@reddit
Once, most nights, but I do drink a lot of water. I started getting up at night to pee during pregnancy at 39 and continued after giving birth.
GonnaGoFat@reddit
It depends on when I sleep. When I go to sleep at 10 or 11 pm I tend to wake up at least once and it’s sometimes twice now.
But when I go to bed at 4 or 5 am I sleep uninterrupted.
I think part of it is that I’m a night owl and that when I go to bed at 10 or 11 my body would much rather just stay up. Also I’m sleeping lighter as I’m afraid I’ll end up sleeping in and be late for work.
When I go to bed at 4am it’s a time I’d rather sleep at and also since I don’t need to go to work for hours I sleep deeper as well.
RoboJ1M@reddit

smokiechick@reddit
None. But I don't get enough sleep and I'm paranoid about wetting the bed after an incident 20 years ago. You know that dream where you have to pee really badly, but stuff keeps happening and so you can't, and then you finally get to relieve yourself in the dream and wake up in a puddle? We still have a waterproof mattress pad on the bed at all times. The absolute last thing I do before going to bed is pee. Even if I did it before I brushed my teeth. Only getting between 4-6 hours of sleep a night also helps.
sundayfunday78@reddit

skinflakesasconfetti@reddit
I have to a take a massive pee every morning at 5am, like clockwork, which is kind of great because I have to take my thyroid pill at 5:15, so I'm usually trundling back from peeing right before it. Then I asleep for another 2 hours before my day starts.
I used to pee 2-3 times a night until i started limiting my caffeine in the afternoon and evenings.
caryn1477@reddit
Sometimes once, but I swear I pee like five times before bed just to try to prevent this.

Too many.
But let's be honest, once it's too many.
In my case it varies. I would say at least one or two days of the week, zero times. And then probably one day a week, I'll get up three times. The rest of the time once you leave between 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. . My typical night time nowadays is 10:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.

It used to be at least once or twice for me. Then my wife got to the end of her wits with my snoring keeping her awake and convinced me to look into a cpap. The Dr explained to me that when you have sleep apnea you don't ever get into full deep sleep, which means your body never completely shuts down it's systems and continues to produce urine (among other things). She told me to expect less trips to the bathroom throughout the night while using the cpap, and she was right! There are still nights when I get up once, but never more than that, and many nights I sleep all the way thru. And bonus, my wife is much happier!

The only thing I can point to is that I’ve made a conscious effort to hydrate more throughout the day, so maybe my body’s overall ability to make use of liquid has been increased and I’m less likely to just purge it? It’s the only theory I’ve got.

I saw a sleep scientist talk about it and waking up a little bit isn't too bad for you.. it's sorta built in like "hear a noise look around, we good? yeah we good. Go back to sleep"
Honest_Flower_7757@reddit
Once, maybe twice. Heavy hydrator in general and I also run at least a few miles every day but I would rather have too much water than not enough.

Some of ya’ll need to get checked for Diabetes.
Prestigious_Kale5546@reddit
Was 2-3, but now just once. I met with an NP about a month ago and she put me on BC for me endometriosis and also recommended I take Melatonin Extended-release. Once I’m done with the bottle of melatonin, I’m going to try Cherry juice. It was recommended by a pharmacist. You drink about 4oz twice per day and it’s supposed to help with sleep.
TK1129@reddit
Once a night a few times a week. I’m 41 and drink a lot of water and a few cups of coffee a day so that’s probably it
Careless_Lion_3817@reddit
1-2 x a night. Female. Been this way for decades…as soon as I made sure I was drinking a ton of water (but I also exercise a shit ton). I feel like given my age and liquid intake…1-2 times a night isn’t bad
Independent-Win9088@reddit
2 to 3 depending on water intake that day.
burnitdwn@reddit
Sometimes I wake up after 3 hours with abdominal pain and can't get back to sleep at all though. (Thanks metformin, grrr)
tragiccosmicaccident@reddit
I was there as well, unquenchable thirst and nightly trips. Put myself on a glp1 and it got a lot better.
tragiccosmicaccident@reddit
Once a night, maybe twice a week. I like drinking water at night, sometimes I overdo it.
Patient_Character730@reddit
At least once, most nights twice. I find that exercise makes me sleep deeper so I am less likely to wake up, but even with exercise always once.
YouHadMeAtFacts@reddit
I used to get up at least once, but once I got my CPAP, I sleep all night.
Spartan04@reddit
None, unless something else wakes me up and then I'll go. Even though liquids tend to go through me pretty quick when I'm awake I've thankfully avoided having that issue at night so far.
AcadianTraverse@reddit
Yeah. It's maybe once every couple months here.
CBakIsMe@reddit
Usually once. I have been trying recently to not drink anything too close to bedtime, and that seems to help me sleep through the night.
HildeFrankie@reddit
Once...or twice. Mostly because I am horrible at remembering to drink water during the day and I have a bad habit of chewing ice right before bed.
Taskerst@reddit
Between zero and one
Squirrel_Master82@reddit
Usually, I sleep through the night. If I forget to go before bed and I drink too much water, I'll wake up like an hour or two after falling asleep and have to go. But it's not a normal thing. Maybe a few times a month.
NotRadTrad05@reddit
Normally 0, 1 if I drink.
TheHoodieConnoisseur@reddit
Zero. Bladder like a camel.
JollyJeanGiant83@reddit
Once about 2/3 of nights. About 5 minutes before my alarm the others. I take a pill that causes dry mouth and the mouthwash isn't very effective for me, so I drink a lot of water with Mio.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Anywhere between none and three. Probably averaging around 1.

Almost never if I am asleep.
Platt_Mallar@reddit
Once, sometimes, twice if I drink something just before I go to bed. If I get a migraine, I might have to pee several times though. I dunno why.
primabelladonna35@reddit
Generally none. Sometimes once if I drink more than a few sips right before bed.
Racacooonie@reddit
Zero or once, usually.
tremendousbrunette@reddit
Usually one time. I stopped checking the times but I tell myself it’s only midnight to make myself think I still have 5 hours of sleep!
One_Market_9335@reddit
4 or 5 😣
Fun-Preparation-4253@reddit
80oz minimum a day. Once a night. 44m
xenniac@reddit
None tbh. I stop drinking liquids excessively a couple hours before bed and just have some sips. I pee right before I turn off my lamp (11ish) and sleep through until I get up to feed my cats at 5. When I also chug water and pee. I drink a metric crapton of water during the day, but this works for me.
saltybruise@reddit
I drink a shit ton of water every day and play beer league hockey late at night which means I chug water at like 10-midnight 3/4 nights a week. I get up to pee at 4 am pretty often. If you're peeing more than once a night talk to your dr.
