Americans living near the Mexican border, have you encountered any problems with illegal immigrants, smugglers or drug cartels?

I’ve lived in Arizona for pretty much my whole life. Half of my family is from a border town, the other half is from Tucson - about 70 miles as the crow flies to the border. I live in Phoenix. The short answer is: No. Despite what the hype around the media would tell you, cartels usually stick to themselves and don’t stir shit up on this side of the border. Don’t get me wrong, they’re active but they don’t want to draw the attention because, for lack of a better phrase - it’s bad for business. Yes smugglers exist (both drugs and people) and yes the border patrol has discovered tunnels and seizures of a ton of drugs and busts of cartel adjacent/affiliated gangs doing drug deals, but it’s hardly ever in the public eye. My uncle was a narcotics division police officer (among other things) in Tucson for 30 years, most of it during the height of the war on drugs in the 80’s and 90’s. He’s got mountains of stories you’ve never heard of regarding the above, because hardly any of it was ever in the public eye. Another uncle lives on a ranch about 30 miles from the border. He’s never encountered illegals cross his land (that he’s aware of, I’m sure it’s happened) nor any issues with coyotes (human smugglers) or general cartel activity. I’ve likely interacted with thousands of illegal immigrants living here. 99.99% of them are ordinary people who wake up, go to work, and go home.
