The 1969 Italian war film “Eagles Over London” has the RAF flying Hispano HA-1112s and the Luftwaffe flying Spitfires.

honestly the hispano with raf colors looks kinda nice

We would almost have German Hueys for Black Hawk Down, because the DoD wasn’t very fond of the script.

Still more accurate than Braveheart.

Somewhere there's footage produced by the US Army that edited Japanese markings onto Dauntless dive bombers.
I first saw it in some documentary and figured the documentary folks had done it but later saw it as part of a genuine US government-produced film. i wish I could remember enough about it to find it.

It’s not like after the war they could get much footage of real Zekes or Oscars, forget a Kate or Val.
YumWoonSen@reddit
I'd think after the war it would be easier than during the war, but you raise a good point - IIRC the film made by the gubmint was made during the war.
Although in reality a good 95% of the people out there wouldn't even notice - or perhaps care - if footage suddenly changed from a P47 to an Me109.
My gal and her son don't even notice when footage switches from a single engine to a twin. I don't think much about it, they couldn't care less about planes so they just see an airplane. Much like I am with their poke-shit lol.

They had one job.
Honorable mention to this Texan playing a Stuka.
HolyCowAnyOldAccName@reddit
I mean the Hispanos... with a Spitfire paint job... from afar... on 1960s film... if you have nothing else...
So be it.
But if there is one outstanding feature of the Spitfire. One that every child going through the I-like-airplanes-phase knows. One that makes the silhouette alone identifiable from miles away. It is the elliptic wings.
Especially weird considering that everyone around \~35 back then would've consciously lived through the war.
ToeSniffer245@reddit (OP)
The Hispanos are actually meant to be the Hurricanes flown by 303 Squadron, hence the “RF”. Somehow worse.
Poagie_Mahoney@reddit
Well maybe they were truly thinking about the actual history of the Battle of Britain, even if the thought was minimal. Afterall, didn't Hurricanes bring down way more aircraft throughout it overall than Spitfires? Meaning they were the actual workhorse?
Lironcareto@reddit
They didn't even get right the underwing roundels... 🤦♂️
mcm87@reddit
The Hispanos did play 303 Squadron hurricanes in the Battle of Britain film. There weren’t enough airworthy hurricanes to fill the “repeat please” scene so the Hispanos filled the background rows.
ToeSniffer245@reddit (OP)
Well at least those weren’t front and center like this film.
RatherGoodDog@reddit
35 years back was 1990 buddy.
HolyCowAnyOldAccName@reddit
= most people who saw that film in 1969 have actually lived through the war, with high chances of actually seeing those planes with their own eyes
Lillienpud@reddit
A very un-German silhouette.
Erikrtheread@reddit
Ugh, and the Texan is well known for convincing paint jobs, at that. honestly just lower the landing gear and it's 100% better.
rtgconde@reddit
Omg that’s a bit of a stretch.
TheManWhoClicks@reddit
Ha we have 4 of those with these markings standing around at Van Nuys airport. (Playing bad boys for air shows I assume)

Can AI in out time do any worse? LOL
YumWoonSen@reddit
Can AI in our time do any worse? OMG watch the trailer.
It's 56 years old, what do you want? It predates any kind of CGI and predates the first Star Wars movie and its OMFG-at-the-time special effects by 8 years.

First off, all the Sten guns at Dunkirk really pissed me off! A simple fix. But they had some rubber Sten guns so they just decided to hand them out. Who would know or care?
So I tried to watch it. I started to fall asleep right about the time the babes with their '60's hair and tight sweaters started showing up. So that perked me up for a bit. But still the movie is such a dog I did not come close to finishing it. Maybe another time.
All they had to do was paint the Buchon's like Bf 109's, and leave the Spitfires alone. They made much more work for themselves the way they did it. They did not need to have Hurricanes in the movie at all. They could have done what the producers of the Piece of Cake mini series did. In the book they are Hurricanes. But in the mini-series suddenly they are Spitfires. Done.
YumWoonSen@reddit
If the wrong era props in a B movie piss you off then son, you got issues.

Just Plane Wrong.
Joe_Bob_2000@reddit
Wishful thinking.
Rebuking them for their inability to defeat the Royal Air Force (RAF) and gain air superiority, Göring demanded to know what more they needed to secure the elusive victory. The young German ace Adolf Galland responded rather cheekily, “A squadron of Spitfires!” – an answer that could not have greatly pleased Göring.

stuart7873@reddit
Galland would have approved.
xerberos@reddit
Apparently this was done by the pilots and ground crews because they knew the director had no idea what he was doing.

Meanwhile in an alternate timeline...

Ok this is cursed.

What about “The Battle of Britain”, which I remember seeing in 1969?
RockApeGear@reddit
"Look how they massacred my boy!" -Literally everyone
wrenchandrepeat@reddit
Kind of like how McQueen stole a German "BMW" for his escape in The Great Escape but it was really a Triumph TR6 Trophy, lol
HMS--Thunderchild@reddit
Why??
12lubushby@reddit
I have never seen the film but i would assume the story needs the German planes to pull a maneuver that the spitfire could do but the Hispano could not. Still it makes me mad
CrazedAviator@reddit
...WHYYYYY?????

Well it is Italian.
