I bet it outperforms the kingfisher.

Looks like RCAF roundels on there. Crazy Canucks.

I think that unofficial title is normally reserved for their maritime helicopter crews. I mean, these are the guys who invented the beartrap after all.

How the hell else are you going to get away from weaponized Naval Moose?
righthandofdog@reddit
I'll see your friggin sharks with lasers on their heads and raise you a friggin jet powered sea moose gun platform
Extra-Dimension-276@reddit
Small correction but its actually a canso under canadian designation

Bring back the Flying Rocket Boat Yacht

Hey, I'll take one based on the Japanese US-2, the only seaplane still in military service (and it's a recent design!).

Thanks I love it

I think the Chinese are still operating their flying boats https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harbin_SH-5
Late-Application-47@reddit
Oh cool. It's a South China Sea thing, I guess.

Interesting - not sure why it'd be necessary, unless they were trying to take-off overweight, or perhaps get a plane out of a body of water that they somehow landed on that was too small to get up to speed to leave from?
Nuclear_Geek@reddit
When you need to go slow, quickly.
Jessie_C_2646@reddit
The RCAF used Cansos as search and rescue aircraft. There were times when they absolutely had to take off overweight and the RATO helped with that.
NavyShooter_NS@reddit
Makes sense!

A couple of guys hanging around the hanger having a few beers, "We should get rid of those old JATOs that have been in the backyard storage. Bob looks over at the Catalina. Hey, I've got an idea! Wouldn't it be funny..."
Duckbilling2@reddit
could be in high seas you need to get off the deck in a hurry to be able to take off at all
if you bury The nose in a swell going 40+ knots it's all over
AnarchistPilot@reddit
Perhaps to increase the maximum take off weight (more fuel).
66hans66@reddit
Because taking off in a swell requires all the power you can get.
Grumman Albatross had RATO as a standard feature.
