No shade, but does anyone else find DFW boring? There’s nothing fun to do.

I (28F) don’t like DFW, but I’m stuck here for business. What is there to do? Doesn’t seem like many options besides sports, eating, and drinking. I’m from LA so I’m used to being able to do pretty much anything during anytime of the day.
I like surfing, music festivals, hiking, industry parties, etc…
Beginning_One1134@reddit
I moved to DFW from Connecticut lol. There’s more to do in Dallas itself and there is the entire state of Connecticut… You’re just not looking hard enough or you’re just a boring person. There’s lots to do!
PokeMeRunning@reddit
Oh this will go over well.
FreeDaemon@reddit
“I can’t surf or go skiing! What’s wrong with DFW?!”
arlenroy@reddit
So, I am a forced transplant, about 25 years now, I didn't choose to come here but I decided I'm going to make the best of it. I came here to be with my daughter. I'm originally from Northern California, far north, close to Nevada. It was nice being able to walk out your back door and snow board into town, but thats not one of the available hobbies in DFW, and thats ok because there's just as much fun stuff to do if you look for it. It's not even that hard, a quick Google search, and 20 minutes later, you'll have a full day of fun shit, like have y'all seen all the cool shit at Grandscape? They have a bar/restaurant thats a game show! You register online for the different games you play and what "show" you want to do. There's that adult jungle gym, a waterpark-ish place with a ton of little saltwater pools you can lounge around in. We might be landlocked with no snow, but you can find some entertaining shit.
royalooozooo@reddit
People in TX really struggle on how great the outdoor life can be in other states.
There are some great outdoor areas in TX but they aren’t around DFW.
people will get defensive and tell you to either try Buc-ee’s again or move out.
txnewsprincess@reddit
I mean, you can even surf here (albeit not in an ocean), but GoodSurf does have people watching, too: https://goodsurf.co/
Hiking: https://www.dmagazine.com/guides/ultimate-outdoor-guide/
Music festivals - those aren’t going to happen every weekend, but you can kind of create your own by heading to specific areas of town and doing a little bar hopping.
The key is to be curious and poke around. The Observer has good suggestions, I curate an events listing with the team at D Magazine, and we also create a ton of guides for the city.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Eh, that’s not the same
txnewsprincess@reddit
I did give other suggestions.
Bottom line, I’ve found that people that don’t actually want to be here can find a way to not like it, and there isn’t much anyone can do by way of suggestions to make that change.
Fun is here. You just have to want to have it.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Yeah this city sucks, nothing changing that I guess. Thanks for nothing.
moogle15@reddit
Thanks for making the rest of us Californians here who are decent people look bad.

You moved to Dallas for what?????
challahbee@reddit
also from LA, have lived in DFW since 2017 and you're absolutely right, even though you'll catch a lot of flak for it. a lot of creatives that tour or curate events tend to pretend DFW doesn't exist, and when they do come here, it's rarely. there is an art scene but is harder to find and access. the music scene is largely disappointing. hiking exists but the landscape is too flat and similar to be interesting. camping is about the same. night life after 10pm (when it exists)is abysmal and unchanging.
i think a lot of people that are from here don't realize what it's like elsewhere. my wife is from here and was taken aback when she went out to LA for the first time, at just how much there was to do basically all the time, and the sheer variance in stuff to do. we find stuff to do here but it really doesn't hold a candle to other cities.
you're not alone or crazy in feeling this way!
FreeDaemon@reddit
The people here know what is in here. That's why you don't find them saying "why is dfw different from my previous city which has x, y, z?!" Such a boring city should discourage people from moving but they keep coming ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Thank you, I got all the locals crying in my notifs as if I just slapped their Mama.😂
challahbee@reddit
we are on their turf lol so it makes sense! north texas can't help being geographically kind of boring (central texas is much better for camping and hiking tbh) and it's fair, i get it. my hackles go up when people complain about LA being dirty or fake. but i can also admit that LA can absolutely be dirty and fake, too - it's just that the good far outweighs the bad. here, i'm not so sure i can make that same argument.
and that's without touching the politics, which - aside from the obviously bad effects of the conservative policy and legislation that dominates texas - i would argue also have a dampening effect on creativity. idk. i'm always willing to be proven wrong and have an open mind, but my opinion hasn't changed yet.
truth-4-sale@reddit
There's probably thousands of private parties going on in the metroplex. You just have to be invited.
azwethinkweizm@reddit
Los Angeles is fucking boring but you're gonna come over here and call the kettle black? BIOYA.
Drewness326@reddit
Rage bait.
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
Everyone is taking it too, sad to see. If we could embed images on this sub I’d use one of the classic “you call this bait?” memes
GeekyTexan@reddit
So you moved to Dallas with plans to surf. Brilliant.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
I will never move here
mypoisoneddream@reddit
Then what’s your problem? You could look for something local to do instead of coming onto a local forum and whining. “No shade” then straight to negging with a prove me wrong attitude.
No shade, just pointing out that your attitude could be the problem.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Wow y’all locals really are butthurt
mypoisoneddream@reddit
Ok troll.
AdDiscombobulated623@reddit
What’s the point of your post then? Just to shit on the city?
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Basically
AdDiscombobulated623@reddit
Nice man
wgardenhire@reddit
Pinky swear?
GeekyTexan@reddit
Ah, I get it. You are commuting from LA.
ElizabethBarbara@reddit
Good.
TexasBaconMan@reddit
What do you mean industry parties?
ARealHumanMaybe@reddit
He works in the service industry, a host at a restaurant most likely.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
She works in the music industry
ARealHumanMaybe@reddit
Yeah, I’m sure. If you’re worth anything in this supposed music industry you work in, you wouldn’t be in a city you didn’t want to be in. My advice to you is do better and you won’t have to come to places like this.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
God forbid I travel for money 😂
ARealHumanMaybe@reddit
It’s giving broke escort vibes. Get your coin girl, but stop trying to be something you’re not and hating on people that are happy just cause they live in a place that brings up your trauma that you’ve worked so hard to create this fake persona in your mind of a girl with a successful music career living her best life in LA.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
I don’t have trauma, don’t project babes.
ARealHumanMaybe@reddit
So let me guess….he paid you for the whole weekend, flew you out here, but after one night with you he couldn’t stand it, so now you’re stranded here till your return flight tomorrow night
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Lmao I’m not finna play with you 😂
ARealHumanMaybe@reddit
I knew it! Stop being mean and take your ass to Club Dallas and enjoy all the fine amenities it has to offer. It usually gets packed around 2 after the bars close. Round Up might have some lime or other country dancing going on before it switches to full bar mode. Highland Park village and Northpark has good shopping.
ARealHumanMaybe@reddit
Honorable mentions because I have a feeling these are your kind of places: new fine arts, and Paris bookstore
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Those places are for men…gay men….Im a lady!
ARealHumanMaybe@reddit
Maybe try some of the bars in the m street area, I think that’s where most SMU kids go out. I’ve heard the bar at the Virgin Hotel is a swingers bar, but I’m not a swinger so I cannot confirm.
ARealHumanMaybe@reddit
Well club Dallas is very inclusive, but to be honest I don’t have any trans friends in Dallas so I don’t know where they congregate
TexasBaconMan@reddit
Good luck. I hope you find what you’re looking for.
4-ton-mantis@reddit
But has never heard of the song "Look at me now"
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
I don’t listen to abusers
Gal-Incognito@reddit
She should go back to LA if she enjoys vapid industry parties. Yikes.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
You wouldn’t know. You’re hating from outside of the club😂
4-ton-mantis@reddit
How can someone even do that, they can't even get in?
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Google it
4-ton-mantis@reddit
I was paraphrasing the introductory line from a pop song from some years ago. Don't like the first in the song but i like the other two.
Did you not know they was a song like this?
Gal-Incognito@reddit
Are you asking for ways to meet more men to sugar baby for? Or trying to run into surgeons while you’re here? Go tuck yourself into a booth at The Crescent to prowl for men you can lie to and get off Reddit.
redditmyeggos@reddit
Massive arts district, great museums, nature reserves. If you can find anything to do, that’s on you
4-ton-mantis@reddit
I can tell you Maine has some really nice beaches. It also has Stephen King.
I'd suggest a trip to Ogunquit. Op can afford it.
redditmyeggos@reddit
Yeah, OP who is posting about how they can’t keep a job and don’t want one but they’re rich because they’re “from LA” seems really great and not at all like an insufferable loser
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
You locals so mad, get off my dick
Plastic-Interest8525@reddit
I can vouch for the museums. There are a TON of museums (especially art) in DFW.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
None of that shit sounds fun sis
UnholyTrashPanda@reddit
Sounds like a you problem
moogle15@reddit
I'm from the LA-ish area too and initially also thought DFW was boring, but there is a good amount of stuff to do, especially if you're only here temporarily.
Some general suggestions:
- Cedar Ridge Preserve (maybe once the weather improves)
- Sixth Floor Museum/Grassy Knoll
- Fort Worth Zoo
- You could try going to Austin for a weekend.
- I'm too antisocial to attend music festivals, but I think the Toyota Music Factory, American Airlines Center, and Eventbrite are good places to go for concerts/info about concerts.
moogle15@reddit
Also if you are still in the area for it, the State Fair is truly a must-see for out of towners (not speaking sarcastically; it is genuinely fun to attend when the crowds and weather cooperate).
4-ton-mantis@reddit
I did recently hear that living in uptown provides aa good time. But apparently the rent is insanely expensive.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Dude I’m from LA I can afford it lol
Gal-Incognito@reddit
Wow, you are insufferable. There are cool places to go, but I don’t want to see you there so…
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Sweetie you couldn’t afford to be in the same space as me
Gal-Incognito@reddit
I mean, that’s probably true but I’d take being broke over being a stuck up bitch any day.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
🤭
Gal-Incognito@reddit
That said, I can afford a plane ticket to LA. Can you?
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Have fun in economy 😂
Gal-Incognito@reddit
Have fun on the private plane of some creep who only sees you as fulfilling a kink 😘
4-ton-mantis@reddit
Alas, i was making an oblique nod to a post i saw here yesterday whinging about how rent in uptown was getting too too high but he(?) Wanted to stay living in the area bc he works in Addison and more importantly, is proximal to going out drinking with his friends. On many levels, that post had not been well received.
So my comment is more of a meta snark type. Sorry for the confusion.
ARealHumanMaybe@reddit
Wow dude you seem so cool. I can’t believe someone like you can’t find something fun to do. Hopefully you’ll be back home in California soon to go to your industry parties. Fkn wannabe 😂
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)

I’m sorry your current hobbies don’t match DFW. I would love for there to be a ski-able mountain within 2 hours of Dallas. Unfortunately there isn’t; however, DFW is a world class market with MANY things to do. You just have to seek them out. Pick a hobby you want to try and there will be a place to try it in DFW.
Sports leagues, clubs, organizations, and social events is where I would start if I were you.
StaminanSparkEnjoyer@reddit
Deep Ellum has concerts most days of the week, and they aren't even the only area of metroplex with music venues...
Music festivals do take place here too, they might not be EDM, but we got them.
Don't you have any hobbies whatsoever that can be social? Sounds like you lack a real hobby.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
I listed some of my hobbies
StaminanSparkEnjoyer@reddit
And I answered regarding music, but I would hardly consider being in attendance at a concert/festival a hobby. That's just being part of an audience.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
I’m not gonna argue with you. Music is a hobby.
StaminanSparkEnjoyer@reddit
Took a look at your profile. If you haven't been around long enough to hear about Oak Lawn and all the clubs there, check it out. That's the gay district with LGBT clubs and bars. S4 has drag shows you can check out.
StaminanSparkEnjoyer@reddit
If you play an instrument, definitely. Then the answer becomes "find other musicians to play music with".
We don't have an ocean to surf, but we got lakes. I know people kayak in North Texas.
Neither_Ad5267@reddit
not going to lie, I lived in Dallas for 15 years and there is a huge lack of community events that are big and central that is special to each city. I mean wylie has a miniature state fair carnival each year and a couple other events. however, this is on the higher end compared to other cities. we need more things such as the Christmas tree at Galleria Mall. we need something that gives change and spices things up. six flags is always going to look the same. grandscape is always going to look the same. we seriously need something new that is seasonal or yearly. there is a lack of creativity in design of the city. we don't have enough places such as the K town in Carrollton or Legacy West in Frisco which is why majority of areas in Dallas seems like there's nothing to do.
and let's be honest only the boomers/millennials like hiking and nature anyways. they like to recommend things that do not fit in Gen Z environment
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
Thank you
CatteNappe@reddit
It may be the problem is not DFW, the problem may be the narrow definition you have of what is "fun". Surfing isn't really a thing here for obvious reasons. I'm sure some industry of some sort has a party going on any given night, but I guess that depends what industry you are in vs what industry the party is for. As to the other items on your limited list, there are more options for music than there are nights available to go see the performances - including the occasional festival; and hiking folks likewise have quite an assortment of choices in, near and not far from the city.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
I never defined fun or listed everything I found fun. You clearly missed the point so move along.
csonnich@reddit
Coming to North Texas looking for surfing and industry parties is on you.
That said, have you been to Waco Surf? Apparently it's legit.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
I never said I was looking for surfing, I said I enjoy surfing. Y’all cannot read lol.
rwhockey29@reddit
Plenty of stuff to do on the weekends within a couple hours. Camping, racing, off roading, hiking, fly fishing, etc.
Although if you lead off hobby is surfing, dallas was definitely an interesting choice to move to.
georgebroussard49@reddit (OP)
I don’t live in Dallas, I live in LA
DallasMetalHead68@reddit
There is a surfing place that just opened in Deep Ellum, hiking trails in Dallas(and places within a few hours drive), and live music venues of all kind here. Sure, we don't have the variety that LA offers, but there are definitely plenty of options here.
Gusdabus214@reddit
The Trinity River has some gnarly waves 🌊
TexasBaconMan@reddit
There some hiking options in DFW, better options 1 hour drive, great options 3 hr drive.
