Climate change is real that is all
Bear-Upper@reddit
We should definitely get used to these storms as the planet gets warmer and the air holds more water. Thunderstorms will continue to get more extreme. Heavier rains. Oh yeah, and more turbulence too.
Notaseriousperson26@reddit
50 years ago they were worried about global cooling…
Curvol@reddit
50 years ago, Microsoft became a thing.
PlayfulOtterFriend@reddit
In the 80’s I read about global warming and climate change. I am mystified as to why it is still being debated now.
mic_crispy@reddit
Prepare how?
justplainndaveCGN@reddit
Less carbon emissions. Maybe actually starting to take cars off the road in favor of better public transportation. Leaning into electric vehicles. Renewables.
mweyenberg89@reddit
How will that make us better prepared for storms? Humans have experienced bad weather for thousands of years.
justplainndaveCGN@reddit
We would probably have less severe weather if we didn’t warm up the planet
Original_Initial_501@reddit
Stuff it greta
mic_crispy@reddit
Our cities are simply not designed around public transportation, it's that simple. Our EV by % is high no? Although I guess the argument is if those things would still actually change things, or if the earth gets warmer regardless?
Blanche_Deverheauxxx@reddit
They said improving public transportation and 50 years ago. Yes, much of modern infrastructure could be retrofitted to account for and expand public transit. That would require investing in public goods/services and spitting in the face of car and oil/gas lobbies. Not a lot of will there.
mic_crispy@reddit
You're not going to retrofit millions of miles of winding neighborhood streets etc. We have suburbia like no one else. Places where public transportation works have way more population density and vastly different zoning. Public transportation working in mass here would require a titanic population migration.
Blanche_Deverheauxxx@reddit
There are not millions of miles in Dallas. And again, the premise rests on what could have been done starting 50 years ago to adapt.
mic_crispy@reddit
Well you're also not going to solve the issue with Dallas alone. I was speaking of america as a whole. But Dallas is a great example of suburban sprawl. Sure yes 50 years ago if someone could have convinced the entire population of Dallas to build central and up rather the out sure. It didn't happen though. So that's my original question to OP, what does adapt now mean.
Blanche_Deverheauxxx@reddit
Even with regard to America, building more robust transit systems in densely populated areas and having some sort of train service to more rural areas is also not outside the realm of possibilities. It's also not a question of scale if countries larger than the US manage to have better transit systems or are currently investing in improving their public transit.
mic_crispy@reddit
It's not about actual population size. It's where people live and how they choose to live their lives. 4 million people live in greater Tokyo and they have an amazing Transit system, because people don't mind living on top of each other and that's how the city was designed. IN your scenario you can add all the train stations in major cities you want but people still have to drive to those train stations, because there's not going to be a nearby stop in their neighborhood to get them there. Almost every city in America was built like this. Neighborhoods and strip malls. The ship has sailed.
Blanche_Deverheauxxx@reddit
China, Brazil, and Indian. All geographically larger and all taking initiatives to invest in public infrastructure. The US doesn't lack ability to do so, it lacks the will to do so.
mic_crispy@reddit
Those three countries are not great examples of good infrastructure, lmao.
Blanche_Deverheauxxx@reddit
You need to reread what I wrote.
justplainndaveCGN@reddit
We may have been able to change more to make them more friendly to all of that 50 years ago though.
Now it’s too hard. Or rather, they don’t want to put the money into it and we make bank on oil. Oh well. It’s our own fault.
Bear-Upper@reddit
Better infrastructure made to handle said storms. Smart Flood management.
Anxious-Library-964@reddit
this is the first time in a while i actually turned off my pc and tv in fear
mrsjrc86@reddit
Dumb question maybe … but why? Should we unplug stuff? I have a brisket on the smoker 😬
mouthfullamochi@reddit
Your shit can get cooked if it’s plugged in during a storm and lightning strikes your house or anywhere near. ask me how I know
mvarnado@reddit
Invest $20 in a good surge protector, friend. Cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
mouthfullamochi@reddit
All my appliances were plugged into well researched surge protectors. They didn’t do shit when my house was struck.
mvarnado@reddit
No kidding? If you had a real surge protector, it came with a protection guarantee. You can write the company with the loss you suffered and probably get compensated.
DIY_SelfHelp@reddit
Ugh, I was hoping to sleep but it's just getting near me.
mvarnado@reddit
That wasn't really a thing, dude. Anyone remember the twister that ripped up royal lane? Or icemaggedon? Or the wicked downburst that flattened trees all over upper greenville? This was a gentle squall. Hang in there.
JewDiCious@reddit
This the coolest summer we’ve had in a while. Something’s up, but don’t look up.
Smurfeggs42@reddit
With the summer like this i fear another snowmageddon happening
permalink_save@reddit
And wet, they just happen sometimes, give it another couple of years and we'll be back to weeks straight of 100F+ weather. Enjoy it while it lasts.
jamesdukeiv@reddit
Hell, I expect next summer will be a scorcher
permalink_save@reddit
It might. I think these things go in cycles so it might be relatively decent again. The few years prior were unusually hot, so I am enjoying the relief.
Cryptex410@reddit
iirc if you compare averages across the last couple decades this is still in the top 25% warmest summers
Ichgebibble@reddit
This was the third coolest summer in Texas history
smoke_inyoureyes@reddit
Doesn’t feel like it lol but you’re probably right. Just still humid as a mf
CajunReeboks@reddit
It's been the most humid summer in quite a few years, but I don't even recall us breaking 100 this year yet. Maybe once or twice?

aguynamedbrand@reddit
You are right climate change is real. The climate has been changing for as long as the earth has existed. We are well overdue for the next ice age.
Queasy_Invite_2678@reddit
everything’s gnarly
Plus_Debate@reddit
Fuckin… first storm? That was weak AF.
Plus_Debate@reddit
Didn’t even threaten to drop a twister. Cool light show though.
watermunch@reddit
Didn’t see or feel anything really, why is everyone saying it was bad?
emeryldmist@reddit
Because the world exists beyond what you can see from your window.
We lost 2 huge branches (12 & 14 inches in diameter). One fell a foot behind my car and one a few feet away from the side of the house. We were very lucky. It looks like we only lost 1 shingle, probably due to a small branch on the larger limb.
A storm is never uniform in all the areas that it touches. If you looked at radar, there were plenty of dark red spots in that storm last night and a lot of general green. You were in the green area. We were in the red. This is how storms work.
sarahkazz@reddit
I think certain areas got hit harder than others based on the flair I’ve seen on the subreddit
TheGringoOutlaw@reddit
yep the storm knocked over my trash bins and dumped 3 inches of rain at my house.
Jrag538@reddit
im in mckinney and we had 2 really strong wind gusts, the iron table/chair set i have in my back yard that weighs 80-100lbs get blown 30ft into my damn fence and an umbrella with a 50lb base got thrown into my pool, branches down, saw a tree down too, was definitely a strong few gusts!!
scribequo@reddit
Had the worst pollen allergy attack last night just cuz I was walking my dog at around 7-8 before the storm came. Got 2 hours of sleep because I could not breathe regularly.
Fearless-Mention-765@reddit
Was camping during the storm, need to get a new tent now haha. Gnarly storm but cool to watch next to the lake
ExtraMayo567@reddit
I slept right through it lmao
