Akbar and Jeff duh. It ran in the paper I devoured and later worked for, the L.A. Weekly in its heyday. I had to deal with Matt Groening here and there. He was a dear.

I moved to the Bay Area in 1984 and got my "Life in Hell" fix from one of the weeklies up here. Does anyone recall whether it was in the East Bay Express, the SF Weekly, or both?

I loved the LA Weekly, especially the music listings and recommendations. It was our bible for finding the best shows in the 80s and 90s. I also loved the comics in the back--Life In Hell, The Angriest Dog In the World, and especially Ernie Pook's Comeek. Lynda Barry is a genius and her comics are both funny and heartwarming.

A while ago I found a way to access old LA Weekly issues going back to the early 80s and would just scan through the concert listings and kick myself for not having gone to more shows (in my defense I was a poor college student working multiple jobs). So many fantastic shows though.

I tried, for YEARS, to get a job there (Graphic Designer). Then I ended up working with 3 alumnus from L.A. W at another paper, and they told me how bat-shit crazy the management/staff were and how shoestring everything was there. Though they all seemed to be remembering it fondly.
