I think I may have a few too many retro laptops…..

20 years of collecting retro machines here
There were at one point 500 machines in the collection but massively downsized
PS there are probably another 30 on top of this in another set of drawers
386-Pentium 4M machines running DOS to XP
DonManuel@reddit
This is terrible just because of all the battery mess you have to manage. Trying to get rid of most laptops from my collection just because of that annoyance. Enough work dealing with capacitors for me. Only I envy the little storage space needed for one system compared to towers and desktops.
Lukeno94@reddit
NiMH/NiCad and modern LiPos are the only things you need to 100% remove/replace as preventative measures; most lithium coin cell and lithium ion batteries are generally OK in storage as long as they're not physically damaged.
istarian@reddit
NiMH or NiCad batteries are unlikely to catch fire or explode, though, unless they're installed in a machine and the charging circuitry fails in an unsafe way. They're far more likely to leak/corrode and damage the machine.
Lukeno94@reddit
Generally the lithium batteries are only going to do that whilst charging. In storage, they're fine. Unless they're modern LiPos, which will eventually swell and wreck things.
nmrk@reddit
Yeah that was my first thought too. Downthread he says he removed NiMH batteries etc. so he's aware of the risks. But I hope he has a fire detection and suppression system too.
Oh crap I just realized, I have a few dead batteries in a stack, that I intended to recycle. One of them is an old, bulging Macbook battery that I replaced for a friend, I better get that fire hazard out of here.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
All Ni-Mh have been removed… Half still charge and are charged semi regularly
DonManuel@reddit
Great commitment, really impressive collection!
raindropl@reddit
Playing devils advocate: this is much better than collecting full size vintage computers with CRTs. You can pack them in parallel, very efficient
istarian@reddit
The CRTs are really the killer since they're large, heavy, and at the greatest risk for damage when being moved.
Dotanium@reddit
Are you not worried about the batteries in the Laptops?
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Nope….all stored correctly
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Ni-Mh removed, and Li-ion are in storage

Nice I've been wanting one for a while

Got any ibm 1482 (type 2621-482) laptops in there?
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
God no those I series weren’t thinkpads, they were IBM branded acer garbage
flyguydip@reddit
I worked at the help desk while attending a university that gave each student a laptop. Each person got a 1482 with a xircom modem/ethernet pcmcia card. They weren't terrible machines, but the hinges were definitely hot garbage and IBM fought us all the time about replacing them claiming it was always user inflicted damage not covered by warranty. Either the hinges were too tight and broke the plastic around them or too loose and lids/displays were damaged when they slammed shut.
I would still like to own a fully functional one someday for nostalgia, but I'm not sure any survived the last 3 decades intact. Honestly, I think I just miss the "Thinklight" that appeared on a handful of that series of laptop.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Most thinkpads from 1998 on had the thinklight, thinking around the Thinkpad 600 era
Lukeno94@reddit
Was later than the ThinkPad 600 era - it's when the T series came out that the ThinkLight started to appear.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
You are right, checked my 600 and it was around the T30 looking online
flyguydip@reddit
Absolutely, I even have an A22m that has one, but not all the 1400 series laptops had them, is all I was saying. At least according to https://macdat.net/laptops/ibm/thinkpad/i1400.php
W0CBF@reddit
You can never have too many!
retrogamingxp@reddit
Now it makes sense I can't find anything interesting. You have all of them smh
RocksandClouds@reddit
They seem rather cozy
Cinemiketography@reddit
WOW thats awesome
istarian@reddit
You have my sympathies, collecting laptops is very tempting.
Privileged_Interface@reddit
It's what comes after running out of room from towers, desktops and of course, servers.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Don’t talk to ma about servers…
3 x DL360 Gen9 2 X R730XD 48Tb 2 x R730 1 x R740 1 x Chenbro (2 x 4114 and 256Gb RAM 48Tb) 1 x MD3820i SAN (44Tb)
All in my cupboard
TechIoT@reddit
You need a Gen 1 DL360
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
I threw a load into recycling from a customer refresh, a server room had been abandoned for near on 20 years, to I threw it all out
TechIoT@reddit
Damn, and here's me wanting to start a server rack of old
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Haha we actually have one at work, filled with 20-25 year old servers and SANs it’s used for UPS load testing
Aggravating-Exit-660@reddit
Good lord
istarian@reddit
Heh.
I have exactly one rack server (HP DL360 Gen7) and it's mostly collecting dust because it was a bit intimidating and I got distracted.
Cool as they are, though, those things are heavy chonkers and a little awkward to set out without a proper rack.
Privileged_Interface@reddit
Jeez
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Yeah I know
Interesting_Walk_747@reddit
We have ceiling fans so why not ceiling laptops?
istarian@reddit
You don't have to actually run out of room for those things first.
The only necessary step is realizing just how many towers, desktops, etc you actually have, right before giving in to a similar set of impulses on laptops.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
That’s the problem 🤣

Communism is surely a joke, but what does that have to do with a shelf of laptops?
wdesportes@reddit
Look like you have the DELL Latitude C810? Is it with ethernet or modem? You will need to open the small cover
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
It has both…!
wdesportes@reddit
Both holes yes, but the card does both? What reference is it? I am struggling to find a card to replace mine that only does RJ11
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Yes it has both RJ11 and RJ45
wdesportes@reddit
No need, there is a one screw access to the network card. Could you check inside please? Or from Windows what is the network card? Sorry to ask, there is no resource about it on Internet
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
It’s a C800 not a C810 as first thought, I threw the C810 away
wdesportes@reddit
Oh.. Okay, thanks for the chat
NIILO27@reddit
Nah it's not possible to have too much of those
ChestNok@reddit
Terrific. Do you agree that the pinnacle masterpiece of that era bad boys was and is M4800?
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Far too new for this as that was a 2013/4 machine and these are 1992-2004 mainly
ChestNok@reddit
Yes, no doubt, but that Precision series that definitely have that old chunky vibe. So I immediately thought of that.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
That’s actually the newest machine in there and only for the fact I like the chunkiness 😂
ChestNok@reddit
M4800 is a daggnabit AK47 of laptops. I think it would survive even on Mars. Something got burnt once in a blue moon - just swap a component from China. Infallible
Chicadelsol-@reddit
Which Precision do you have? M40? M50? They're both quite rare.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
M4300 I think from memory
Chicadelsol-@reddit
M4300 is indeed the Precision based on the D830
po2gdHaeKaYk@reddit
God, I had a laptop around the 2004 era. What crap.
I wrote my entire PhD thesis on a little 13" MacBook! What a trooper of a machine.
Anyways, I think the best era of laptops was around 2011 (and before). My 2011 MacBook Pro could have so many components modded and improved. After 2012 and beyond, it's all been soldered-in crap.
istarian@reddit
The Precision M4800 is a lot newer, but the PrecisionM6400 shipped back in 2008...
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Yeah those are gone now, moved house and sold them

Catlittersnackcakes@reddit
Looks like you have room for more to me.
BroomClosetJoe@reddit
Can I have one?
This-Requirement6918@reddit
You want a 486 with vinegar syndrome, brittle plastics and seized hinges?
BroomClosetJoe@reddit
Does it run
This-Requirement6918@reddit
Yeah. Hard drive needs a smack to get the heads to seek though.
BroomClosetJoe@reddit
Let me think about it, I'll get back to you on that.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
lol 😂
ay_lamassu@reddit
Love it. You can have one hell of a LAN party!
IllusionXXI@reddit
Lol at some point I had 6-7 laptops laying around, most that I got in a lot. At some point, I said nope and started selling them off. I'm still keeping a Latitude D610 for WinXP and another Centrino with i865 chipset for Win98 though.
This-Requirement6918@reddit
Do you watch them for vinegar syndrome? I had one take out 2 others recently. They were 486 machines though and these don't look that old just yet.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
I live in the uk so it’s not a problem, if I was back in FL it would have killed these by now, room is kept comfortable and has airflow
Corpulete@reddit
I also have like 25 of then but what worries me are their batteries. Can they be a problem?
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Not if stored correctly
Corpulete@reddit
Can you expain that a bit more? Every laptop i have has a battery and all of them are stored as yours. Shoulf i remove their batteries or IS It safe like that?
This-Requirement6918@reddit
Yes, disassemble and remove the RTC --and-- Standby batteries if equipped! They may leak and destroy the motherboard.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
It’s safe but for the most part I store the batteries separately especially if nimh based
This-Requirement6918@reddit
Yes, watch the screens for vinegar syndrome! I recently had one take out two others, one being a Texas Instruments 4000M that was in pristine condition with the dock.
TxM_2404@reddit
Having too many retro computers is impossible.
This-Requirement6918@reddit
When one gets vinegar syndrome and takes two others with it, yeah, it's definitely possible. Especially when they have brittle plastics. 😭
dillingerdiedforyou@reddit
AGREED?
BoysenberryFinal9113@reddit
I see some old Compaqs in there. My first job in county IT dealt with those. Fun times.

reconcile@reddit
I wonder if some of the older ones predate state actor "persistent backdoor" threats from firmware hacks in the same vein as Equation Group from 2015.
There are researchers tackling the overall problem at Columbia University who might be interested. Shoot, I might be, if ~1990 or earlier with good output peripheral support.
Brianshoe@reddit
Any IBM T22?
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Yup! In another cabinet
Brianshoe@reddit
Nice!
thatvhstapeguy@reddit
Man I recognize way too many of these. 3rd photo, 4th-ish from right is a C or D series Dell Latitude, perhaps a C840.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Precision model based off the D830
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
Yeah C600/610/840 I have a load more from a UK naval station in another cabinet all Pentium 3 (840 is a P4…)
Chicadelsol-@reddit
I think they meant the C series stacked sideways in the bookshelf
Illumenatrix@reddit
I just consigned the bulk of mine off to the thrift shop. I spent way too long staring at them doing nothing, waiting for that perfect project that never materialized. I'm also watching my 80 year old Aunt try to figure out how to clean out the house she's spent the past 60 years in and its not pretty. Just trying to clean out my uncle's electronics is becoming a terrible chore I don't want this for my kids.
po2gdHaeKaYk@reddit
It's tough isn't it?
Out of curiosity what kind of projects were you imagining?
Illumenatrix@reddit
retro gaming, weather station, Apple 2 and/or pc dos emulator, photo frame, kareoke machine, just off the top of my head, besides anything that"might" pop up. But I just don't have the oomph for it anymore, and all that stuff is easily accomplished with newer tech, that has come into its own, real leaps in ease of use and reliability and cost.
obi1kenobi1@reddit
That’s probably not much more than how many I have. I’m primarily a Mac collector, so it felt weird reaching the point where I had all the old Mac laptops in my collection, the only ones missing were the super rare and expensive ones like the 2400 and the Macintosh Portable.
I tried pivoting to PCs but that’s basically a black hole that I would never escape from, each manufacturer had ten times as many laptops as Apple at any given time and even just sifting through them to figure out which ones would be interesting to collect would be a full time job. And of course the few that I did try to seek out are basically unobtanium because they were weird quirky models that didn’t sell and unlike Macs nobody thought to save them so they were thrown out after they were obsolete. I’ve had a saved search for the Sharp Widenote for over a decade and never got a single hit despite TV and magazine coverage (as well as a few photos online) implying that it really was a product that made it to production (and it doesn’t help that Sharp reused the name a decade or so later for a mainstream line of laptops).
But one of my favorite things about collecting laptops, apart from them always being at the cutting edge of technology and industrial design, is that they’re so small. That’s a lot of laptops right there but just imagine how much space they’d take up if they were full size desktops with monitors and keyboards…
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
That was the black hole I fell into, I picked the main retro brands Compaq IBM Toshiba etc and went mad….
wavemelon@reddit
I have about 5/6 laptops, core2duo up to 8th gen i7 - thanks for making me feel a bit less “hoardy”

Maxstate90@reddit
Can you stack them like that? Won't it damage them? Also do you have tips for how we're best to keep them? I take it you remove the batteries?
istarian@reddit
I personally feel that it depends on the systems in question, because some have more awkward shapes and older ones much heavier than newer ones.
Most-Community3817@reddit (OP)
