I would expect it from a religious fundamental group. I love it when a pastor or priests mentions Linux, and not only do they know what Linux, but they use it as well.
“If your child has a computer program that does something you don’t understand, call the police, and we’ll send government thugs to harass and traumatize them, without even bothering to check whether what they did was actually illegal in any way. Please help us protect freedom and democracy in Europe.”
To be honest if a child has Kali Linux that is indeed sus. Should have a conversation to understand what they are doing. You don't want the FBI to show up at your door some day because they were following an nmap tutorial.
If I knew a kid interested in using Linux, I'd probably suggest a "boring" distro like Ubuntu or Fedora, or tell them to check out one of the gaming OS ones like Bazzite.
I feel like Kali would not only have way too much stuff they could get themselves in trouble with, but it would be a bad way to get them started with Linux in general if all they ever use is a tablet.
You assume that the government won't throw the book at them to "make an example out of them".
Better to make it into a career as a professional white hat or pen tester then it is to set them up with a criminal record they can't drop without significant legal help and time.
That's why doing it as a kid is the best time to do it. Their criminal records are typically sealed. So it doesn't affect them. Plus they'll usually only throw a book at a child if it's a persistent pattern not once or twice. So they can experiment away until the first time they get arrested safely.
Yeah, Kali specifically is pretty sus when there are a million other easier distros who's primary features AREN'T shipping with metasploit, aircrack-ng, rainbowcrack, John the ripper, et al OOTB.
The problem is that people who write nonsense like those posters can barely turn a computer on. It's like all the other moral panics, created by adults least knowledgeable about said topics.
Well if I see a child using typical hacking software without a clear educational context and active parenting control is gonna look sus and I would probably get worried.
There's plenty of cases of children and minors playing with hacking stuff they find on internet without knowing what they are doing or where are they getting on
If a kid wants to learn how to code or do ethical hacking is totally fine! A lot of us started that way, what I'm saying is that as a parent you need to know what your kid is doing with a computer and give the support needed to learn a ethical use of code and software
This exactly. Not all roads are the same. The roads available in high school are vastly different. Some schools have excellent computer science teachers. Some have very poor ones, where even an average student knows more than the teacher, and parents who know even less.
"Clear educational context" is a construct here and doesn't represent reality for children.
Myself included, when I was little i used to break a lot of things trying to learn how they work and is okay but also a lot of times i could fuck it up really good lol I think I was lucky to have that security sense of not getting in trouble.
But also i've encountered a lot of not so lucky cases in my work, mostly kids getting in trouble by using hacking stuff without knowing what they are doing and also is irresponsible for the parents perspective.
I'm just asking parents to be more aware of what their kids do with a computer, cellphone or internet
The US as a whole is sheltered puritanical hellhole, and the last thing we need is more parents putting more GPS trackers on kids. That's why they end up messed up, with mental health issues, shooting up schools and the such. But that's my opinion.
Either they're trying to be hackers or they're little whistleblowers/journalists that are terrible at choosing Linux distros. Either way, not a good look!
Like, are there people that use Tor for dumb chatrooms and that's it? Of course! Are those people teenagers? I doubt it.
Well, we’re now a few years down the road from the creation of this poster, and the tech community in the UK are now very worried about teens installing Tor…
because we just pushed a law where every platform from Reddit yo Bluesky to XBox is now asking for selfies or uploads of Government-approved IDs if you want to access ‘adult’ content.
Not sure. I saw a comment from another Redditor who claimed they installed Tor Browser, connected to it and were somehow served CSAM while searching for porn. No fucking way am I going to risk trying that to confirm or deny!
You think teens don't do that? You would be surprised lol I work fixing computers and also give security advice and a lot of times see a lot of weird and crazy things in teens and family computers like tor and encrypted files with sus names or ddos software or keyloggers installers
I made the mistake of using Kali instead of the usual Ubuntu WSL to run some AWS commands once. AWS GuardDuty looked like a Christmas tree lol, only because some innocent commands were coming from a Kali distro

It is a distro menat for pentesting. I actually aggree with the NCA here. It is a little suspicious if someone has it on itheir desktop. I'd fully expect anyone who has it as their daily drive to be a script kiddie.
ITT: very smart Redditors get upset at a poster that is clearly intended for the attention of non-techies that actually makes reasonable points for the context, like “if your teenager is running Kali Linux they’re probably a script kiddie”
Also ITT: people act like being a script kiddie is a beneficial learning process for bright children rather than a complete nuisance
Controversial opinion I think this poster is a good idea if implemented properly. Other than discord, these tools are actually a little odd for a kid to have on a computer (I say this as a discord-using guy who we first distro was Kali on a VM). If a kid actually has all this stuff, it’s probably a pretty good indicator they’re interested in cyber security and so this is actually a great way for governments to find kids with latent talent to develop into professionals.
I know the UK is a bit of a meme right now but they aren’t gonna charge a kid with hacking (and win in court) just by virtue of them running Kali.
Moreover, there’s an argument to be made that parents should be aware of this stuff to nip it lest their child actually does do something illegal on the family computer and all of a sudden they have police knocking at their door.
Kali Linux is also useful if you're extra security conscious.
All but Discord are useful I you try to protect your privacy.
Also, hacking, as the term was originally used, could also mean understanding your system of choice well, writing cool software for it, and is still frequently being used to talk about kernel development.

I'd say it's pretty suss to see a kid using it, but it doesn't mean they can't use it or shouldn't be using it.
Any kid using it is likely interested in network security, and their primary target will be their guardian (in the best of cases) if they're doing anything beyond educational purposes.
In the same way that I'd only let a kid play with a set of lockpicks in a controlled environment, I'd be wary of (and show interest in) their activity if they were interested in network security.
It is a distribution designed for that purpose after all.
Discord and, often, virtual machines are very popularly used for mundane things. Like anything a child is using, it's still a good idea to know how they're being used, as much for their safety than anything else.
While the others on the list aren't *necessarily" concerning, they should at least raise an eyebrow.
If the teachers know their students pretty well, most should figure out the geeky ones who are into Linux aren’t necessarily hackers…
We’re probably talking one maybe two kids in a school year of 250 - 300 depending on the size of an average UK high school (typically ages 11 - 16, our secondary schools are more like Middle and High schools combined from an American perspective).
Discord's main purpose is not for hacking (we all know), yes there are many servers for hack, porn, scamming, but what if that kid using discord just for communication with hus friends in game??
Also, If my child would wonder anythjng about Kali Linux, why would I report this?
"Well when you take an image, you put this image up, and you say 'here kids, don't be like that, don't take them red pills, kids.' They didn't even know there was red pills, until you said 'now you can say no, you can say no.' Then they say 'I can say no? I didn't know I could say yes.' - Charles Manson
The meltdown they'd have if they saw my network 😂😂 I have all of those and more... it's even funnier when you find out they were all required programs for my classes🤣🤣
All of these things on a child's computer is definitely suspicious.
And please don't defend Kali. When someone mentions using it, you know they are not a professional security expert and never become one. Yes, it had it's uses, but wh whenever it's mentioned on Reddit, you know it's a script kiddy.
This is the opposite of "think of the children". This kind of unnecessary paranoia and fear by authorities is what got me kicked out of high schools for being interested in hacking and security.
I don’t know why this is controversial. If a child had all of these on their machine you are right as a parent to question them. If you already suspect your child is breaking the law but don’t know much about computers this would be a helpful guide.
Right, but it states “any of these”. I wonder how many kids who play games have Discord on their computers? West Midlands Police better be ready to field a high volume of called in tips! 😂
Help them to collect bounties when they discover vulnerabilities. Teach them how to report the vulnerabilities correctly (don't share publicly, provide proof of concept if possible, ...) Tell your child about Hackaton.
The child has fun going around security, he'll learn that it is a skill and that it isn't inherently wrong or bad.
Like everything, ethics is what makes something good or bad. They'll get a lot of fun from ethical hacking and will develop a strong moral foundation from the ethical distinctions of hacking.
They will learn an extremely valuable skill and that skill may earn them a very good salary in the future.
You first statement has nothing to do with the second. You said:
If your child is hacking, they are no longer a child.
Not only is that silly and patently false, it demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of hacking. Hacking and cracking are not synonyms, except for technologically stunted people.
Going on the dark web goes far beyond having fun doing ethical hacking.
Going on the dark web is neither cracking nor hacking, and there are people doing it for ethical reasons. Further, thinking that there are no legitimate or ethical reasons for going on the dark web further makes me think the person uttering that is technologically stunted.
TOR is used by reporters and activists in countries where dissidence and free reporting are illegal.
No that very naive. 4chan may have dark content, but it's at least legal. The dark web holds content that no one should ever have to see.
You're characterizing what's on there without having an idea what's on there. It's certainly more questionable for a child to be there, but the dark web is absolutely legal and has its value.
This sounds like the same verbal diarrhea we had to put up with 25 years ago when people were saying cryptography should be outlawed.
I've never actually been to the dark web, but I feel like it's probably similar to visiting 4chan.
It's probably gonna be cooked, nothing great can come out of it, and you might want to consider why the kid is doing it because there's probably some bad influence involved.
Oh no I'm aware that the dark web is worse, just that 4chan is probably part of the internet iceberg that shouldn't be breached by kids even if there's some comparatively safe parts.
The dream, if I find out my kids use/know half of those I'd be so damn proud. That stuff gave me a job AND a passion. Having a knife at home doesn't make you a murderer it's what you choose to do with it..
If I ever have a child that's into any of that. I'd try to cultivate that into something positive immediately. Security researchers and ethical hackers can write their own meal ticket. Literally.
My grain of salt is, just let them learn. There are lessons that only life can give you. Plus, security research is way better as a learning experience than doing the nth guide from tutorial hell.
I feel like the majority of "hacking" stuff isn't gonna be picked up by kids unless they have computer savy parents or a legitimate interest in technology.
I would think the majority of the time they're trying to cheat at a multiplayer video game or get around a web filter.
Keep an on your kids computer, don’t just let them install shit
I monitor the hell out of my kids’ pcs because of the atrocious nature of the internet- they can’t install a goddamn thing without me entering my password which they don’t have and need my yubikey too
This poster is so old now, the NCA responded that it was done without their knowledge or consent. It was a third party who created the poster for a school. Here's an article from 2020: https://www.zdnet.com/article/uk-police-distance-themselves-from-poster-warning-parents-to-report-kids-for-using-kali-linux/
Of course it is, it's meant to be used solely as a penetration tool/device, that's what the devs recommend. You wouldn't be.... Daily driving it, would you?

lynchingacers@reddit
oh nice they give you a dissidents shopping list take notes
CrossyAtom46@reddit
Wtf???
Discord's main purpose is not for hacking (we all know), yes there are many servers for hack, porn, scamming, but what if that kid using discord just for communication with hus friends in game??
Also, If my child would wonder anythjng about Kali Linux, why would I report this?
Michaeli_Starky@reddit
Kali on the child's computer? And Tor browser?.. yes, suspicious.
snowflake37wao@reddit
Hello Professor, want to play a game?
dagbrown@reddit
Windows is also an operating system often used for hacking.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
jr735@reddit
There are many Windows trolls in this sub, absolutely.
werewolfshadow@reddit
"Well when you take an image, you put this image up, and you say 'here kids, don't be like that, don't take them red pills, kids.' They didn't even know there was red pills, until you said 'now you can say no, you can say no.' Then they say 'I can say no? I didn't know I could say yes.' - Charles Manson
bbt104@reddit
The meltdown they'd have if they saw my network 😂😂 I have all of those and more... it's even funnier when you find out they were all required programs for my classes🤣🤣
TomDuhamel@reddit
All of these things on a child's computer is definitely suspicious.
And please don't defend Kali. When someone mentions using it, you know they are not a professional security expert and never become one. Yes, it had it's uses, but wh whenever it's mentioned on Reddit, you know it's a script kiddy.
GavenJr@reddit
There's REAL brain dead people actively making, designing and approving this kind of BS.
Let that sink in.
MrScotchyScotch@reddit
This is the opposite of "think of the children". This kind of unnecessary paranoia and fear by authorities is what got me kicked out of high schools for being interested in hacking and security.
StrictFinance2177@reddit
If my kids used this stuff, I'd be proud.
ConfectionForward@reddit
This screams north korea style overwatch. Snitch on friends, family, neighbors, but it is worse it is your own children!
Tomicoatl@reddit
I don’t know why this is controversial. If a child had all of these on their machine you are right as a parent to question them. If you already suspect your child is breaking the law but don’t know much about computers this would be a helpful guide.
gracchusmaximus@reddit
Right, but it states “any of these”. I wonder how many kids who play games have Discord on their computers? West Midlands Police better be ready to field a high volume of called in tips! 😂
cyberworldghost@reddit
Only if hacking was that easy !!!
mguinhos@reddit
Wtf
Sapling-074@reddit
If your child is hacking, they are no longer a child.
codeprimate@reddit
WTF.
Subject-Leather-7399@reddit
Nope, your child just has special interests.
You should encourage them to do what they like.
Sapling-074@reddit
Going on the dark web goes far beyond having fun doing ethical hacking.
jr735@reddit
You first statement has nothing to do with the second. You said:
Not only is that silly and patently false, it demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of hacking. Hacking and cracking are not synonyms, except for technologically stunted people.
You're characterizing what's on there without having an idea what's on there. It's certainly more questionable for a child to be there, but the dark web is absolutely legal and has its value.
This sounds like the same verbal diarrhea we had to put up with 25 years ago when people were saying cryptography should be outlawed.
atomic1fire@reddit
I've never actually been to the dark web, but I feel like it's probably similar to visiting 4chan.
It's probably gonna be cooked, nothing great can come out of it, and you might want to consider why the kid is doing it because there's probably some bad influence involved.
Sapling-074@reddit
No that very naive. 4chan may have dark content, but it's at least legal. The dark web holds content that no one should ever have to see.
atomic1fire@reddit
Oh no I'm aware that the dark web is worse, just that 4chan is probably part of the internet iceberg that shouldn't be breached by kids even if there's some comparatively safe parts.
tomedwardpatrickbady@reddit

I was that one weird classmate who was playing minecraft on Linux
My mom thanked me for showing her Tor to access blocked online libraries (she's a passionate reader)
ParadoxicalFrog@reddit
Well yeah, it's a ready-made pentesting kit, not a daily driver.
el_lley@reddit
Are they recruiting or just scholarships?
InsanityCore@reddit
Seems like a how to hack starter kit.
Arsenicks@reddit
The dream, if I find out my kids use/know half of those I'd be so damn proud. That stuff gave me a job AND a passion. Having a knife at home doesn't make you a murderer it's what you choose to do with it..
opdrone47@reddit
100% of hackers breath oxygen. If your child is breathing oxygen...
viking_redbeard@reddit
If I ever have a child that's into any of that. I'd try to cultivate that into something positive immediately. Security researchers and ethical hackers can write their own meal ticket. Literally.
Virtual_Revolution82@reddit
They're trying to recruit the most they can in their ranks.
homudoka@reddit
i don't even think the people that would be afraid of this stuff would even know what linux is, let alone kali 😭
ruvasqm@reddit
My grain of salt is, just let them learn. There are lessons that only life can give you. Plus, security research is way better as a learning experience than doing the nth guide from tutorial hell.
KnowZeroX@reddit
If you reported every kid who uses discord, the police station would be overrun with reports.

There is no way this is legit. That whole sheet is absolutely ridiculous.
Fresh-Toilet-Soup@reddit

ChimeraSX@reddit
if my child is hacking, I'd be proud. Lots of demand for ethical hackers in cybersecurity.....or they could do unethical, the system is a mess anyway
mfnalex@reddit
Hello police, a child is hacking.
haykeminyan@reddit
Do the same about web-devs please ;) you work with browsers? You are creating json's and serializers => find a health job 😂😂😂
StuffedWithNails@reddit
JSON? Sounds like hackercode.
atomic1fire@reddit
I feel like the majority of "hacking" stuff isn't gonna be picked up by kids unless they have computer savy parents or a legitimate interest in technology.
I would think the majority of the time they're trying to cheat at a multiplayer video game or get around a web filter.
ConanTheLeader@reddit
If a child had kali Linux that is definitely suspicious. It's 100% not work related.
mrnoonan81@reddit
Chair: Hackers use these for long hacking sessions

Ads like these will only make kids abuse Kali Linux ~~drugs~~ more. I hope they are too lazy to read books and just rely on YouTube videos 🤪

Keep an on your kids computer, don’t just let them install shit
I monitor the hell out of my kids’ pcs because of the atrocious nature of the internet- they can’t install a goddamn thing without me entering my password which they don’t have and need my yubikey too
ApplicationMaximum84@reddit
This poster is so old now, the NCA responded that it was done without their knowledge or consent. It was a third party who created the poster for a school.
