Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash “Shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die”

He shot a man in Reno, but ended up in a California State Penitentiary. How?
View on Reddit #65818848

SeaRevolutionary1450@reddit

Folsom is a maximum security prison. States that don’t have their own maximum security prisons send their prisoners who require it to other states. I think Californian had them before Nevada and Folsom is one of the older ones
View on Reddit #66255639

thatrightwinger@reddit

It's possible that some states have taken in others' prisoners under certain circumstances, but I can't find that Folsom did that specifically. Folsom was built to take in prisoners when San Quentin was full. I looked up the song itself, and according to wikipedia: >When photographer Jim Marshall asked Cash why the song's main character was serving time in California's Folsom Prison after shooting a man in Reno, Nevada, he responded, "That's called poetic license."
View on Reddit #66261980

SeaRevolutionary1450@reddit

Fair. I don’t know much about Folsom taking out of state prisoners specifically just a guess based on a couple other things I do know. Probably reading too much into a song that’s not meant to be exactly like a documentary.

thatrightwinger@reddit

Reno is right up against the California border near I-80, so my theory is that the singer was in Hallelujah Junction, sitting a bar. Hallelujah Junction used to be tiny town up until the 1970s, when the California bought it out for the highway. So he shot the guy in the bar, on the California side, but close enough to Reno that he just tells his jailbird buddies that's where it all went down.

*Don't Stop Believing*, because it mentions a supposed neighborhood in Detroit that does not actually exist. This does not stop locals from shouting "Detroit" along with Steve Perry when the song is played at hockey games and the like.

Anything Seger or White (Jack or Stripes) for Michigan or Motown for Detroit specifically. Lose Yourself by Eminem is a great one. If that is not specific enough, I’d go with Detroit Rock City by KISS, even though I am not much of a fan, the song indeed rocks. The state is a giant hit factory. The Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Canadian waters and left Minnesota. Lake Michigan is mentioned once and he talks about the service being held in Detroit. I don't think that song is about Michigan
View on Reddit #65737225

sto_brohammed@reddit

Whitefish Bay mentioned in the song, where they were headed for refuge, is in Michigan and the ship sank just inside Canadian waters next to Michigan's territorial waters. 15 miles away from Whitefish Bay as old Gordo helpfully tells us. The Great Lakes shipwreck museum is in nearby Paradise, MI for that reason. What you're really not getting though is a cultural thing. The Lakes are important symbols of identity to Michiganders. Not just Lake Michigan and not even just the 4 out of 5 Lakes we touch but all of them. If you ever noticed that the Michigan quarter has Lake Ontario on it this question of identity and symbols is why. Many depictions of Michigan are stylistically done showing Michigan as essentially a negative space inside the Lakes like this popular [car window sticker](https://imgur.com/a/V7UIVtu). It shows a bit of Ontario but that's fine, we like them. Anything that waxes poetic about the Lakes is going to attract Michiganders and we're going to claim it.

California has an official song! I listen to a punk version of it, makes me tear up because I don't live there anymore. “I Love You, California” Lyrics by Francis Beatty Silverwood, Music by Abraham Franklin Frankenstein I love you, California, you’re the greatest state of all. I love you in the winter, summer, spring and in the fall. I love your fertile valleys; your dear mountains I adore. I love your grand old ocean and I love her rugged shore. Where the snow crowned Golden Sierras Keep their watch o’er the valleys bloom, It is there I would be in our land by the sea, Every breeze bearing rich perfume. It is here nature gives of her rarest, it is Home Sweet Home to me, And I know when I die I shall breathe my last sigh For my sunny California. I love your redwood forests, love your fields of yellow grain. I love your summer breezes and I love your winter rain. I love you, land of flowers; land of honey, fruit and wine. I love you, California; you have won this heart of mine. I love your old gray Missions, love your vineyards stretching far. I love you, California, with your Golden Gate ajar. I love your purple sunsets, love your skies of azure blue. I love you, California; I just can’t help loving you. I love you, Catalina, you are very dear to me. I love you, Tamalpais, and I love Yosemite. I love you, Land of Sunshine, half your beauties are untold. I loved you in my childhood, and I’ll love you when I’m old
View on Reddit #66017342

catiebug@reddit

Believe it or not, [there is an official state song of California](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Love_You,_California) and you've probably never heard it. But seeing as how there are so many songs about California that it has its own Wikipedia article (that's not even exhaustive), it would probably be easier to pick one per generation.

UnderstandingOdd679@reddit

That official song could use a remix. Kansas Tourism had various artists remix Home on the Range for the 150th anniversary of the song. XV did this [contemporary version](https://youtu.be/0Qr2U_5BsIQ?si=5THCyJ6bVHbgkl37) and filmed the video in Wichita.

The Charles River was one of the most polluted rivers in the country. Then after the song released Massachusetts decided to give a shit about the river. Now it’s one of the most cleanest rivers in a major city. You can safely boat and fish. Swimming is still a concern but you’ll be fine depending on the time of year.
View on Reddit #65732561

RubProfessional3496@reddit

I swam in the Charles a lot 10+ years ago and have had zero health complications
View on Reddit #65743805

SillySplendidSloth@reddit

Clean up efforts began in 1965 when the song was released, but the EPA got involved in 1995, and through most of the 2000s it had a "B" grade (meets swimming and boating standards most of the time) - with it's first "A" (meets swimming and boating standards nearly all of the time) in 2013 (which then reverted to B, but back up to A in 2017). So the major health concerns would be from \~30+ years ago.

There’s nothing halfway about the Iowa to treat you when we treat you which we may not do at all… This song is how news pundits can name so many Iowa cities during the caucuses: Dubuque, Des Moines, Davenport, Marshalltown, Mason City, Keokuk, Ames… Clear Lake!

Just to be clear, California isn't a city, it's a state. That may seem obvious but I've come across foreigners who aren't aware of that. If you aren't aware, California is a bit bigger than Norway (only counting land area) and has a larger population than Canada. You'll see a lot of people here mentioning states because Americans generally identify more strongly with their state than their city, places like NYC or Chicago being exceptions to this.

So some might remember when their IPhone update automatically downloaded a U2 album and everyone was pissed.... On that album was a song called California (there is no end to love). And the song is shit. It's garbage. No one heard it because they hated the album but this song begins with some kind of bullshit row, row, row your boat type melody using the name of my hometown, Santa Barbara. I don't have a song that reminds me of my hometown. I have bands from my hometown who I love, and they remind me of home. Toad the Wet Sprocket, even Rebelution. I might not be a huge fan, but I love you for being from here. All that being said, I don't have a song that reminds me of home, I just have a band that usurped and coopted my town for their bullshit record. In Southern California, with all of our reputable bands, it honestly feels more salient to hate someone for not belonging than it does to not like music that is actually *from* this place. If I ever meet Bono, I'm going to be polite, even gracious, and once I've won his ear, I'm going to demand that he Unwrite this rapacious and grating monstrosity of bullshit immediately. It's the single worst song I can think of and this rich, entitled, pretentious fuck can go back and write Joshua Tree all over again, but leave my fucking town out of your dog shit music. I just hate that song, so much.

Oh, man. I think it's a 4-way tie for San Francisco: 1. I Left My Heart in San Francisco as sung by Tony Bennett (played after every Giants win) 2. Lights by Journey (still played at Giants games but made into a regular thing during the 2010-2012-2014 championship runs, including Steve Perry showing up at some point to sing along with the crowd) 3. San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) by Scott McKenzie (played before every Warriors home game) 4. Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding Curious what other San Franciscans think but these are my four picks.
