People who earn under 30k a year , what time does your workday start and end?

What time do you wake up to get ready for work and what time do you walk through the door in the evening?
I work in retail, earn £26k alarm goes off at 6 and don’t get in till 6. Feeling miserable and wondering if I’m the only one
OptimisedMan@reddit
Can I answer retrospectively.
was 6.30-6.50am wake up. Drive was about an hour to make it in to 8.40 to faff about until 9am start. 5pm finish. Got home around 6.20-30pm.
Hated the commute. On that salary commute felt like burnt time.
NoEmployer7767@reddit
Self employed here. I honestly never stop working unless I'm asleep as even when not doing the physical stuff I'm constantly working on website and dealing with messages from customers at all times of the day and night. They seem to think that because I'm an online business it's acceptable to expect me to reply to them immediately, even if it's 2am. If I counted up all of my hours worked I'm paying myself way below minimum wage. My business is officially closed for 2 weeks every year over Xmas but I still have to deal with customers contacting me all of the time
_this1wastaken@reddit
r/usernamechecksout , question though. Why do you work it if pay is less than minimum wage when counted up? You have hope it will take off someday?
Billy_Daftcunt@reddit
22:00-08:00. Life is fucking shit.
AggravatingStruggle1@reddit
Dispensing Optician - wake up at 7, doesn't start till 8.40-5.30. get home around 6. Honestly I could get up later as I get to the car park at like 8.10/20 but like a bit of pre work chill time. With bonus I am over 30k a year but without I am about £28k.
CarpenterDifficult73@reddit
Working day is 8:30 - 14:30 Monday - Friday (30 hours a week).
I work in a prison with women who are have been recalled.
£21.5k on these hours
I have a 4 year old in school so I get up at 6:30 to get things ready for the morning
JokerzBane@reddit
£29k. Start 7am - 3:30am Mon/Thurs. Friday finish at 12:30.
Plenty of overtime + weekend work optional, think last year I took home £35k propped up by the overtime I did throughout the year.
BrummbarKT@reddit
£25k a year, clinical coding and data quality. live 5 minutes walk from work and sometimes WFH, so pretty much 9-5 but sometimes 8:30-16:30, I could do 8-4 but prefer the later starts
Ok_Mechanic_1787@reddit
From seeing this post its seems people under 30k work a lot lot harder than those on higher pay
dprophet32@reddit
Physically? Absolutely.
GT283@reddit
Differing kinds of hard work I suppose.
Having done factory work and office work, it’s hard in different ways.
Maajorm@reddit
Higher pay ones gotta use their Brians rather than body strength
Double-Praline-2867@reddit
Wish I had a Brian to abuse
dibblah@reddit
£25k. Third sector low level people management and admin. Actual hours are 9-5 but usually more. You're encouraged to take back the time you work over, but realistically nobody does because when you gonna do that? We get an unpaid half hour lunch break but people don't tend to take it. Senior management don't model taking breaks which makes it hard for juniors to do so.
justareddituser2022@reddit
Absolute minimum wage. 9-5. I wake up 7:45 to shower, go back to bed until 8:15, do my makeup and hair, sit around a bit. Leave at 8:45 if i walk, 8:50 if i drive if i feel extra lazy.
Illustrious-Pizza968@reddit
How does one go back to bed after a shower for what 15-20 mins what's the point lol?
HarryPopperSC@reddit
I do the same, just chill on my phone a bit before leaving.
justareddituser2022@reddit
15-20 mins of extra me time.
Sarikins@reddit
My BF can do this, will soak every little second out of being in bed before he HAS to get up whereas if I wake up 15 minutes before my alarm I might as well just get up 🤣
Illustrious-Pizza968@reddit
Yes I'm the same! Once I'm up that's it especially after a shower! I know some people can fall asleep anywhere and really quickly I'm not one of those.
ArtisticWatch@reddit
26.65k (Water hygiene consultant, salary includes a car for work & personal use)
Officially starts at 7:30am to leave the house to get to which ever site/s I'm assigned to that day - can finish anywhere from 12-4pm depending on the site.
I was home at 1:30pm today
Cam2910@reddit
£26,650?
ArtisticWatch@reddit
It's a bit on the low side for the industry but I'm working my way up to create my own business someday.
Lost-Actuary-2395@reddit
A bit? You studied for this job?
ArtisticWatch@reddit
Nope. Trainee so they train you. This is the baseline pay. I didn't go to University, my highest education is A-Level.
You typically get a payrise as you reach certain milestones (like learning more complex systems such as Cooling towers, Spa Pools, Hospitals assessments ect)
A few other companies are offering 2-3k more but they also involve doing more PPMs rather than just risk assessing (and no guarantee that the car is available for private usage).
Having thoses few hours more a day really helps with worklife balance, maintaining KPI and home DYI 🤭
HarryPopperSC@reddit
Sounds like a good deal to me, so long as the future prospects of learning those skills is good.
Cam2910@reddit
Sorry, didn't mean that to come across as derogatory. I wondered if you meant you were 26 years old, earning 65k.
ArtisticWatch@reddit
No worries, you didn't :)
Its a question I get asked a lot! I wish I was on 65k, I'd have a lot more in savings
Departed00@reddit
Legionella risk assessor? I did something very similar around 12 years ago before i left the UK. I'm heading back next year but was really surprised to see the salary is still the same! I was on around 27k when i left the industry over 12 years ago. It's always nice to have the car though, which is worth a few K per year on top of the salary.
ArtisticWatch@reddit
It looks to be around 30-33k+ once you're fully qualified.
My current monthly KPI is turning over 10k a month for the company so I definitely want a bigger slice of that myself but the biggest hurdle will be getting established.
Departed00@reddit
So that's slightly better. I guess with electric cars now that the BIK tax would be lower for the car also.
I did this for nearly 15 years in total-quite a few of my ex colleagues went off and started their own water hygiene companies, some successful, some not. The money is in the sales/account manager side if you're that way inclined, but a lot more stressful. I used to enjoy going to some very interesting places all over the country.
ArtisticWatch@reddit
Account manager is 28k base pay with bonuses (including passive bonuses of renewed contracts) and a car 🤣 we don't get bonuses 🙃
If we did, i definitely would pick up more jobs during my week. Overtime is available but mainly in the Christmas period or working after 5pm.
My car is diesel but is only 2 years old. It costs around £80 of my salary but I don't need to worry about fuel, insurance or maintenance.
Going to different places is the best part. No day is the same. I love getting jobs down the coast or to areas I've never been to. I've been down mines, to animation studios and universities.
I don't think I could ever go back to an office job. I'm annoyed that I spent the large majority of my 20s in offices where the 9-5 grind is real with micro management.
therealstealthydan@reddit
Just out of curiosity and to help with a bit of a steer is that turnover or profit? And I assume when you say a bit more of that yourself you’re talking about your own independent business rather than negotiating with your employer for higher salary?
ArtisticWatch@reddit
I assume turnover as they need to pay the account managers, booking team ect. I should be getting a performance salary increase in November.
Independent business maybe in a few years when I have more experience. I'll probably stay for maternity leave as its pretty decent here and then look at creating my own water hygiene company.
Weak_Worth_2735@reddit
29k shift is 7am-4pm but often do 6am-5pm and wake up at 4:45am
HarryPopperSC@reddit
The majority are in low paid jobs. The top 40% of earners is a LOT of people and we notice them more.
simonannitsford@reddit
Cheered you up - misery loves company? 😂
Double-Praline-2867@reddit
I work two jobs:
A) £26,950 salary, Accounts Assistant: 8 hour day, upto me if I start anytime between 7.30/9am. I usually get up at 6am to let the dog out, go back to my pit for an hour or so before shower etc and cycle to office for 8.15ish.
2 days remote too.
B) £12.51p/h, - Retail "sales": 3 hours between 5pm to 8pm one evening a week, alongside every other Sat and Sunday. Same routine as weekdays really.
Technically I earn over £30k but it's a bit of a juggle, especially now that our first child is due in 3 weeks!
hayleyukulele29@reddit
I have a 3 year old so we’re usually up between 8am / 9am. I start work at 2pm and get in around half past 10. I earn £28.5k.
arenaross@reddit
Your three year old let's you sleep in until 8am?? What sorcery is this?
hayleyukulele29@reddit
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, this kid won’t sleep til almost 10/11pm (not through lack of trying either) and consistently wakes up in the middle of the night for hours at a time!
bluejeansseltzer@reddit
WFH Quality Manager on 27k. Start at 9am, finish at 5:30pm. Wake at 8:30am, sleep at midnight.
Remarkable-Main-2823@reddit
Only just scrapping into this as going to 32k in 3 weeks. But nothing will change, role wise, it'll just be permanent rather than agency. 9-5 with an hours lunch.
sleepyprojectionist@reddit
I have only just ticked over the £30k mark.
I work in manufacturing for precision medical devices.
I usually work 07:00-15:00, but my time is pretty flexible and I can start any time I like between 06:00 and 10:00.
I have at worst a twenty-minute commute, so I am home most days by 15:20.
I am not good at mornings, but the 06:00 alarm is much easier to deal with when I know that I essentially get a full afternoon to do with as I please every weekday.
PabloR-22@reddit
24k, 9-5 (remote, marketing exec)
Obvious_Flamingo3@reddit
Exactly like me, except I’m on 25.5
finishingunitomorrow@reddit
I’m an environmental consultant, £27k. There’s a bit of flexibility in my day but I’m normally work 9:30am-6pm if I take a 30 min lunch break. Luckily I can WFH a few days a week, otherwise the commute is around an hour.
Sarikins@reddit
£12k- £13k but I work part time, 20 hours, day starts at 8am (though I get up at 6am for travel and to get to work 30 mins early) and finished at 12pm, I work in a Dementia ward in a hospital, but I am also privileged, the money isn't for bills it's for my own luxury because my partner earns the real money.
RecognitionLive7647@reddit
26,000k Monday to Friday 8-4.30. Job is easy. I do my own side hustles IN work time so realistically closer to 40k, boss is sound, 5 mins away from home, can’t complain.
Mysterious-List-5336@reddit
Up at 2.50am, start work at 4am, finish at 10am, home by 10.30am, earning a few pence over minimum wage working in a supermarket. Do that 5 days a week.
121daysofsodom@reddit
Surely you receive a supplement pay as those first 2 hours are night shift.
South_Caramel2178@reddit
Nope ends at 5am
Rough-Sprinkles2343@reddit
Picker in a supermarket? I did that 10 years ago and hated the hours 5am-9am
Jazzlike_Highway_768@reddit
My FTC is about £24.5k but I work 22.5hrs a week. My contracted hours are 9-5 with a 30min lunch but I probably do 9.30-4.30 with a lunch break most days.
budapest_budapest@reddit
I work in admin on around £28k. Full time in my position means 8:30-5 with an hour for lunch, or 9-5 with half an hour. I’m usually out the house 8-6.
Previous-Medicine898@reddit
I hope that's not 5 days a week 😯
Forum_Lurker42@reddit
Project coordinator for niche construction company. £35k. Office hours are 8.45-5. And that building is deserted by 5.10. Alarm set for 5 snooze a bit and have a coffee to be at the gym for 6. Out the door to take the kid to nursery about 8/8.15. Usually home just before 6 after pick up.
Ok_Captain2226@reddit
I work in nursing. My work starts at 7:30 am and ends at 8 pm. I always try to arrive 30 min earlier to work for my own peace of mind. Normally I wake up at 5:38 am, it takes 20 min to get ready including breakfast, then a 10 min-ish walk to the bus stop. Normally I arrive home by 9 pm, shower, eat sleep and be ready for bed again.
Beautiful_Task3294@reddit
I once lived in a flat 7 min walk to the hospital.
Could wake up at 0700 and be on the ward ready for handover at 0710.
This was also great since I was a menace for going home with the controlled drug keys.
"have you gone home with the keys?"
"Aw shit yeah, see you in 7 mins".
Ok_Captain2226@reddit
I'm so glad I haven't taken anything home so far 🤣
Afraid_Claim2325@reddit
6-4. 4 day weeks but it's a long day as I have to be up at 4.30 to walk the dog ect
Build IVF equipment.
It's not amazing but a good crowd and beats the only other main industry here, hospitality which I did for 8 years before covid. Won't do that again lol
I complained a lot about it tbh because the pay this way is shite but that's kind of the price you pay for living where I do which is generally really lovely but it was certainly easy living up country.
rev-fr-john@reddit
Usually I wake up at 8am and am leaving home by 9, I either finish whenever the job is done or at around 4
Equivalent_Being_869@reddit
Wake up at 6:30, leaving the house at 7:20 one hour bus to work, start work at 8:30 finish at 5.
Get home around 6-6:30. On my feet all day to barely afford rent and food for month
Gotta do what we gotta do
Equivalent_Being_869@reddit
Monday - Friday. On Saturday I recover from the week and on Sunday I do my shopping and preparing for the week to come
Dear-Skill-2246@reddit
Retail manager here, 30K. Alarm usually at 05.00, if I’m lucky I finish at 15.00 and if I’m not, I finish at 19.00
Eastern_Canary2150@reddit (OP)
It’s a joke you get under 30k as a manager.. are you in a busy store?
Forever_a_Kumquat@reddit
Awake at 7, leave home around 7.30, in work by 8, finish anytime between 1pm and 7pm. Depends on the amount of work on the day.
TrueSolid611@reddit
I wake up at 7 start work at 7.20 and finish about 15.00 but it does vary day by day
phantom_phreak29@reddit
25k 4 days of 7-4 Thursday off work
Super-Coast-5@reddit
That's rough for 26k.
Lost-Actuary-2395@reddit
There're all rough for 26k.
Minimum wage means minimal treatment to employees, if they could legally pay them less, they would.
Haunting_Mouse246@reddit
Counting getting up in your work day is crazy lol
cgknight1@reddit
Important factor for me - I do not want to get up before 7.30am if I can avoid it...
finch_system@reddit
I work part time, do self employed work, and part time study. I don't feel like my work day ever really ends!
