I’m 6 foot I have the seat all the way down. I just need to see the road not my dash
Ok_Judgment3871@reddit
After my first two years i started to ride w/o air. Realized my back actually hurted less, more smoother ride but only with some trucks. Straight international trucks, nope not even air in the seat helps. Old prostar, no air still rough as shit but better than with air, same with t880. However i will say when i drove a 21’ 579 full size frame, super smooth and perfect with just enough air to not bottom out and see perfectly. Im also 6’4” started off trucking 1st year in an LT always riding with full air, back killed all year and didnt know why but i could see over the hood lmao
LTZheavy@reddit
For me, I have to stretch out my legs, even though I'm 5'7". After 37 years of this BS, it's surprising I can still walk or haven't had clots in my legs.....yet.

Meridian, Mississippi. There's a guy there that will drive up along side truckers at night with his interior lights on. Dudes got a massive dong. Seen him 4 or 5 times over the years. Haven't seen him for about a year. Hope he's doing alright
LTZheavy@reddit
Sounds like the guy I saw in Indianola as I was making my way to Sollar General DC. That was about 20 years ago, so maybe he has family in the same game, or he's just older now.

christer820@reddit
I haven’t had the displeasure of driving in Indiana before, but I know the roads in upstate ny suck, I-90 isn’t that bad. Once you get off of I-90 the roads start to immediately fall apart

I used to work with a guy like this. This guy is 5’6 probably and I’m 6’7. One day I got in his truck to move it and the seat was so far down I could barely see over the wheel or out of the mirrors and I’m a full foot taller than this guy. It was a custom seat mount so the actual cushion was maybe 6 inches off the floor of the truck. I have no idea how he did it. After that it made sense how he would bump into bollards and stuff all the time. Poor bastard couldn’t see.
UhOhAllWillyNilly@reddit
But he looked cool af!!!!! (Or so he must’ve thought).
NoManufacturer2634@reddit
Who knows how he looked. His head barely came up over the door
flaming_pubes@reddit
Had a tall shifter too tight? Just my guess.
NoManufacturer2634@reddit
Absolutely enormous shifter with a sparkly ball on the end
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
For real. I see cars try to do dumb ass shit from small side streets because I’m so high up and have avoided being hit when they weren’t looking. I guess I’ll just keep looking lame;)
8framemadness@reddit
Not short. I'm 6'2” seat all the way down, reclined as far back as possible seat all the way back. It's a comfort thing. I know exactly where my wheels and bumper are. And all the things near them ; I saw 600 feet earlier. If you have to sit on top of your hood; you're not a professional driver.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
Guess I’ll be unprofessional cuz I’m short😐
8framemadness@reddit
You're cute too. Wish you well in your truckin life.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
Hey thanks:) I’ll take it after some other fucker on here called me Dee Snyder yesterday😂😐😩
flopjul@reddit
As someone from Europe(the Netherlands) its weird to me that American trucks dont have adjustable steeringwheels as standard... this has been a thing for decades here as standard
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
It’s adjustable. Maybe I just have short ass arms but I have to be able to see the gauges and also feel like my elbows aren’t locked if I move the wheel up enough to see above the gauges. It’s a tough balance lol.
flopjul@reddit
Is it adjustable in both length and height?
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
Oh shit, no! That should definitely be a standard over here.
Brother_Trucker@reddit
I'm 5'10. I never have the seat all the way up or all the way down. I have it usually about 3/4 of the way up, so my knees and hips are at about 90° angles.
Not only can I see the best in that position; the seat can also bounce when the truck hits bumps, which is what an air seat is for! I usually turn off the shock absorber in the air ride seat, because if the seat isn't bouncing, my back is absorbing those shocks. I don't want a bad back, and I don't want hemorrhoids from having my anus vibrated from Indiana potholes.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
😂
Flappybird11@reddit
I'm 6'3 and my steat is about halfway up with the wheel practically in my lap, I dont get how people can have the wheel that far away!
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
That’s what I’m sayin! Idk if I have weird proportions or what, but when I tilt it up, I can’t see my gauges lol.
IntoleranceTOOL@reddit
I am 6'4'' and there isn't enough leg room. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)

kjmiller-1014@reddit
I drive with my seat completely on the floor and kind of midway on the track and I'm 5'8 The reason I ride on the floor so I can kind of feel the road a little bit more plus also that bouncing really really mess with my back until Indiana then I put a little bit of air in there just to kind of cushion the crack holes I ain't a PBR
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
The roads I’m driving… I don’t want to feel more. Lol.
bigbudugly@reddit
When I was 18 years old, my very first job was driving a 1968 Mac three axle. the cab was so small that I actually had to ride with the door open so I could lift my foot up and put it on the clutch pedal.I Did this for eight months until I got a better job oh, and by the way, those old Maxidine motors were something else too.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
Um I am jealous and that would likely fit me perfectly! Lol.
Agnosticprick@reddit
Unironically I think it’s actually safer out on the open road, since it forces your perspective into the distance way ahead of you, keeping you more alert to upcoming bullshit instead of staring down at the road right in front of you

I can’t sit low. I’ve tried and It isn’t comfortable for me. My legs have to be at a 90° when I’m on the seat. Oh, and I’m 5’10”
christer820@reddit
I’m 5’11”. Oddly enough I’ve realized now after a few years of driving. I have long legs and arms for the size of my torso. So I sit super high, and far back from the wheel compared to my coworkers when they would have to drive my truck. Also, even tho I was working for a larger home daily company that didn’t care about footwear. I still wore my redwings, which makes how you settle your legs on the pedals different, when everyone else wears sneakers
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
Yeah it sucks because I got them shorter legs lol… so I go all the way up, then down just enough where I get full pedal control😂
midwestmiller@reddit
Same, boggles my mind how my coworkers are anywhere comfortable with how they're setup after a shift. Sure explains all the random body damage that just seems to appear though.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
Literally why you see old truckers get out and walk bent in half like they’re still sitting in a seat.
Kindly_Impress9665@reddit
Yeah if I sit low my knees start hurting or my hip haha
Outlaw11091@reddit
I'm 6'5.
That is to say, I lower my seat to see. Always.
I've driven in other people's trucks where the seat is on the floor and I've got to fill it with air.
Like, I'm invariably taller than most. If I can't see; YOU can't see.
christer820@reddit
I like having my seat high for visibility. Turns out seeing your mirrors is pretty important. Also, posture. Sitting in a truck for a living and slouching with the seat back and low, good way to ruin your back when you get older. Have the seat up, and straightened out. Your posture is better and the airbag in the seat will absorb at least some of the bumps.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)

My truck has telescopic steering. There's a little bar handle on the left side of the steering column. Releases the wheel so I can move it up, down, in or out. I can make the wheel a flat surface for a laptop.
Now, a loaner truck i got. Only tilts it. I need to reach the pedals. But, can steer with my body.
They should all have telescopic steering. We come in all shapes and sizes. All different driving preferences to be out on the road. We need to be comfortable and alert. Like office people get ergonomic assessments.
Id ask for a different truck to accommodate you.
GusMx91@reddit
For me, the more I see the better. Adding to your observation, I also don’t understand the huge sun visors that cover half the windshield. I get wanting a little protection from the sun when it’s bright out but if you can only see a sliver of what’s in front of you that doesn’t feel very safe to me.
OutcomeSalty337@reddit
Lol. I've noticed most of the folks who ride like that don't have a scratch on their ride. Must see just fine.
mynamep1@reddit
As my trainer said, “I don’t need to see above the dash, i need to see down the road”. A few years later i still feel like that wasn’t the best advice I’ve ever been given 🤷♂️.
HeywoodJaBlowMe123@reddit
This is a good reminder that when walking past trucks at the fuel island, make sure you’re like 7-10 FT away from the nose of the truck. The more, the better.
flaming_pubes@reddit
I work with a couple guys locally that sit low and back and they both have hit shit in parking lots a few different times, but hey at least they’re “cool”
Xermish@reddit
Before I got into trucking someone was pinned and killed at a sister plant I worked at and we all had to go take a tour of the docks so we understood what not to do and live. Then I drove a forklift and the rule of "make eye contact before crossing paths" was ingrained. Once I started driving I leave cushion around cabs and trailers (I back alot in gas station lots and ppl for some reason LOVE to touch my backing trailer while they go behind me) as well as try to make eye contact. If I cant make out what the driver is doing immediately I pause for a second and play it safer.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
Agreed. I operated heavy equipment for year and at the landscape place, you wouldn’t believe the idiots that would try to drive behind you as you’re backing a HUGE loader with a reverse beep blaring. Now that I’ve driven truck in downtown Seattle, I can’t believe more people aren’t killed with the shit they try to pull when they’re in a hurry.
CarPatient@reddit
We used to have kids walk behind the concrete trucks as THEY WERE BACKING IN when we were at highline college... With the beeper on.. I got so tired of yelling I just started carrying a fox 40 whistle.

First they look really, really, really cool! For the shade part, they're afraid of anyone seeing them. The fear is real! Truck drivers carry immense amounts of fear around with them that they hide with anger because they're not smart enough to get out of trucking. In the past I've heard it was worth becoming a trucker due to vast amounts of money but now a days the only appeal is its super easy. I know they have a lot to deal with but for the money its hard to find an easier job. There is a lot of stress dealing with the motoring public. Just my .02 worth.

lazy_wafffle@reddit
i'm short, mines set so i can just see the mirrors on the hood fully and thats it. Gives my seat suspension more travel to soften the ride
BadamPshh@reddit
What's the problem. You said "here's my question, I'm short, the shit hits my knees" there's no question there.
You showed how it's fully adjustable, you can be high enough up but lower it a tad so it doesn't hit your legs. The steering wheel also probably tilts up.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
The question wassss why do you all sit so low when it limits your view? I know how to adjust a seat and wheel, thank ya.

icy_penguins@reddit
I'm 6 feet tall and run a low-base seat sitting on the floor and the back of my seat is literally in my sleeper. I had to take the support post out of the closet to get my seat far enough back where I like it. It's what's comfortable and it's what I know. It's mostly an old school thing most guys don't understand now cause they ain't teaching yall to drive big hoods and look cool on your stool while doing it.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)
Hate to see you comin;)
I respect the shit outta old school and am all about them big visors… it’s just a genuine question of how ya’ll can see lol.
icy_penguins@reddit
I get it, when you can't see us in the truck, people wonder how we see out of the truck. How I sit, I look out of the middle of my windshield and can see the end of my hood and beyond. If I could see my whole hood, the sun reflecting off of it just blinds me and then I can't see shit anyway, lol.
But I will say, I put a little air in my seat every now and then, 20+ years of riding a truck seat does take its toll on the old hips and knees, especially when you do alot of off road stuff.
skeletons_asshole@reddit
When I got assigned my current truck, the seat was firmly on the floor. Also the front fender, three spots on the trailer, the mud flap/fender on a drive, and one of the antenna as well as the roof were messed up. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions there.
sheismeiamherrr@reddit (OP)

Driver seats aren't designed for people less than 5'10. Or for that matter, over 6'2" You need to have your feet on the brakes. At the same times you need to be able to reach the steering wheel. It's a struggle at times. However, I always visually check my locking jaws. I have many tools to make me larger. I haven't found anything, but a shorter human to physically do the crab cobble after hooking, then getting the fuck under, and physically checking. Tools are designed to assist at your job. If you don't have the tools; and this counts when the tools attention designed for you: you have a real digress with the company as well as OSHA. Dude is 6'6", he complains about a back injury on the job. He should be considered, very much so. A 5'2" female dealing with the same injury, she should be treated just the same. It isn't a small section, everyone deserves the tools to both produce the numbers management wants as well as pay their employees well enough. It seems like one or these other these days. Atech is hiring in the Renton area. Home every night. They prefer older drivers, without massive accidents. 32$ an hour, you will be working at least 10 hour days. You can find it at linked in.

Some trucks just be that way. My truck's window is just higher than my seat, you will think my seat is down to the ground if you saw me in the driver's seat.
QuestionSeven@reddit
I’m 6’ and my seat is up. It’s comfy for ME. I can see all angles better.
However… If you’re driving a long nose Pete, I think the trucking gods, FMCSA, CVSA, the governors of 32 states, Mud Duck, the lot lizards in Memphis and DOT requires you to have the seat on the floor and all the way back into the sleeper…. Just my observation 👀

I remember one former colleague who liked to drive with his seat on the floor. It was very funny the day he had to drive the old dump truck -- which had NO seat adjustment. Not forwards-backwards, not up-down, not backrest tilt. Nothing.
Here is seat, there is steering wheel, pedals are down there. Carry on driver!
ParticularArrival111@reddit
Im ltl sit all the way down and all the way back. I see just fine. Now a long hood might be an issue but if it was just cruising hwy like yall would be easy.
thedailyworkwr@reddit
I drive an international lt 2024 day cab. Im 5'8, pretry fit, and i feel comfortable driving with the seat all the way down and all the way back. It honestly makes it a bit more comfortable, in my opinion. I do use a seat pad as well.
TruckingforSims@reddit
Be honest with yourself, the seat all the way back in an International is still at 90*
PeakNo6892@reddit
I'm 6ft. I like the seat all the way up so my knees are comfortable. But damn can I not see traffic lights without ducking or stopping 50ft from the intersection
RyuKirito@reddit
If you have to sit low, because you’re fat…. Go lose fucking weight! This is why y’all have fucking heart attacks while driving and have to take blood pressure medication! Go to the gym! Oh and this is why y’all hit shit and then blame someone else!
Always_Shifting_4459@reddit
When I first started learning trucks and shifting i started to raise the seat. My trainer who was trying to help us pass the driving test for our cdls stopped me. Put the seat all the way to the floor and then said now try it. And she was shorter than me 🤣 im 6 foot and to this day if I can't put the seat to the floor and all the way back (some seats dont go far enough down and cant go that far back and if it's a stick shift) I cant drive it
(Like Halliburton trucks... I hate those fuckers... like one i tried to drive max rpm in the 200 range, still only went 55 and no a/c. The seat made it near impossible to drive too)
SpaceCowboy433@reddit
Adjust your mirrors and makes sure you have enough view between the dash and the top of the steering wheel. You'll get it 🤣
JColeTheWheelMan@reddit
They can't see shit and leaning fatly in a chair is the best thing going on in most truckers lives.
errie_tholluxe@reddit
6 foot tall here. Babe I am with you. I sit up close, back straight so I don't kill my already damaged discs anymore and then I get passed by a ghost who's seat may as well be in the sleeper and a shift knob a foot above their heads.
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
Need room for my boobs.
EntertainmentSweet98@reddit
Adjust your seat to suit your comfort and visibility. Ignore the idiots who adjust their seat to look “cool” in their truck that spend all their truck stop time people watching and judging others 😉
Dismal_Blueberry_617@reddit
Im a big boy!
Adventurous_Cause579@reddit
Im 6'6 in a sleeper. I have to ride like that. I put enough air in the seat to just get it off the floor
superkickpalooza@reddit
I'm 6'4 so i literally have to just to fit
Gijinbrotha@reddit
I can see the road in front of me and that long hood as I go down the road, hell I wish the seat would go down further.
CheesE4Every1@reddit
I raise both all the way up.
mrockracing@reddit
I hate seeing dudes hats when I pass them. It makes me uncomfortable, and worried they can't see.
I always adjust the seat to the lowest position where I can see my hood mirrors. It's always been a good reference point, but I'm short so results may vary. If the hood mirrors are the super low ones I might go higher than that. Too high and my back starts to ache from the pedal angle. But up to that point the whole job gets easier the higher you go IMO.
Ephemeral_Ghost@reddit
I usually put the seat all the way back and the steering wheel up for the next guy. But it’s probably an air leak if the seat is all the way down.
firemarshalbill316@reddit
Her face though. LMAO 🤣
firemarshalbill316@reddit
This is also a reason why truckers flip their trucks. If you sit high not only can you see very well but you will feel the G-forces acting on your body before the truck starts rolling uncontrollably.
pianodude01@reddit
I sit low because I have short legs. if theres any air in the seat, and I hit a decent bump in the road, I will momentarily not be able to reach the pedals.
I lean the seat back just a tad because I find it comfortable
Blackhawk8797@reddit
The less you the less you have to worry about.
Round_Rooms@reddit
5'4 and a half, I have no problem, I have the wheel all the way out.
AdventurousLawyer646@reddit
It's a comfort thing. It's also something most of us are probably used to from our personal cars. Especially if you drive a pick-up truck with your seat set up like that. Don't feel right no other kind of way
nigel_______@reddit
My trainer was shorter than me (5’10”) and always out his seat on the floor. I swore he couldn’t see the fender mirrors.
Bagzthehoney@reddit
It’s just waaaaayyyyyyyy more comfortable 😂 I used to wonder the same when I first got my license now it’s the only way I drive. I don’t have my seat fully slammed on the ground but I do have it high enough to see my hood mirror to check traffic while rolling
Gonzotrucker1@reddit
Seat all the way down and back.
PlsCheckThisBush@reddit
Most of the newer aero trucks are way more comfortable and you can get a good seating position. The W9 and 389 were obnoxious where you had to have the seat way back and low to see properly if you didn’t have wrenches to adjust the mirrors. But you look sweet (the factory probably).
NaBronson@reddit
I’m 6,4 my knees are also always in the way
Truck3r805@reddit
A older driver told me once. You just need to barely see above the dash. I drive a long hood now and still drive the same way. Seat on the floor. Just enough to see over the hood. I can see just fine
MiIarky22@reddit
I'm in the middle of sorts. Not at the bottom or not too high where the seat feels stiff. I keep it at a certain height so my knees don't cut off blood flow on my legs lol
otr_fat_boy@reddit
Truck knows where the road is.. as long as I don't have a pevo screaming I'm leaving the road it don't matter anyways
Cardinal_350@reddit
These people in here haha. I've always sat nearly on the floor. 25 years, 3 million miles and no chargeable accidents. If sitting on the floor causes accidents and poor visibility I guess I'm an anomaly. I see just fine. Hitting shit is a skill ossue
J_ricanbuilt06@reddit
This!! Im 10 years in with a million miles and drive a t880 kenny. Im 5’9” with the Seat on the floor and cruising! Was trained by an old skool that had a peterbuilt 379 long nose No chargeable driving offense. Its really on how skillful a driver you are and knowing the rig you drive.
J_ricanbuilt06@reddit
Easy. Its called knowing your truck and looking ahead.
InvestigatorBroad114@reddit
I’m 6’5” and drive a 389. I have to lower the seat to see because I have a visor and long legs
freshdrippin@reddit
I used to constantly adjust depending on conditions
freudsdriver@reddit
Tell me how you see the end of your hood?! It looks ridiculous, and like you're desperate to appear edgy and cool.
