Hey folks, I've been digging into the industry data for Flatbed freight over the past several months and here’s the lowdown from 8/20/25 to 9/3/25.
Long Haul loads? They actually went up by 8%, from 12,395 to 13,391. But the rates per mile took a tiny dip, dropping just 0.5% from $1.92 to $1.91 — barely a blip.
Medium Haul tells a different story: loads dropped 8.3%, from 13,285 down to 12,181. Rates? Stuck right there at $2.60 per mile, no change at all.
Short Haul numbers also slid a bit, with loads falling 3% and rates slipping nearly 5%, from $6.41 to $6.11.
So, the big takeaway? Long Haul is seeing more action but slight rate pressure. Medium Haul is quieter on loads but rates hold steady. Short Haul’s losing a bit on both fronts. Interesting times out there in Flatbed land, folks!

How are medium and long haul loads even profitable at those rates?

What rate would make it profitable? What’s your driver cost, insurance cost, maintenance cost, and fuel costs?
