Can anyone tell me something about these? Were my family poor before I can recall?

Its got a big "CANCELLED" stamp across it, but it looks like all of the preceding tickets were used as you can see the stubs on the left hand side, so I wonder if based on the date (which was when the regulations changed) that it was an older book of tokens that were cancelled after the new legislation (and maybe new ticket books given out?) was introduced.
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
i reckon its an "example token" sent out with a letter to all recipients to explain what they would be receiving in future after the scheme started
MolassesInevitable53@reddit
Probably.
When I had these, the shop kept them when you used them.

Milk Tokens.
Your family were most likely on some form of benefit, the current equivalent is "Healthy Start".
Interestingly, based on the date it was from the first day of the The Welfare Food Regulations 1988, as that came into force on the 11th April 1988
From that:

I had milk tokens that looked exactly like that long before 1988. My children were born between 1976 and 1980.

I used to get milk tokens.ideal to swap for baby formula.and after I split up from my partner I still got tokens.and we lived miles away from my parents.and our lovely milkman used to buy my tokens cash.whuch gave me enough to get a train to where my parents lived.and so the kids had a day with their nana and grand dad. I was relying on social security for food and rent.t was paid £35-00 a week.my rent was £29-00 a week. Basically I starved so the kids could eat. But those tokens stopped us from going hungry.

Milk tokens..not just for milk...

Milk tokens we given mostly to people with low income or some type of benefits, like income support and child benefit. My mother had these when I was a child. You just went to the shop and redeemed them for milk or other type of grocery shopping, depending on which shop you used them in.
LoyalWatcher@reddit
Used to work in a supermarket and these were essentially counted as vouchers. They were redeemable for a certain value.
We didn't usually look too hard at what was being put through, it was more of: 'Did you buy some milk/fruit juice/baby milk or similar? That's £1.10 (or whatever) towards the total then.'
Jayatthemoment@reddit
Pregnant women and women with young kids got them. Orange juice too. Combatting malnutrition.Â

GenXcellency@reddit
