Ugh, I’m in that club now

This morning I was lying on my side in bed, and I sneezed, and I pulled something in my sternum area. It hurts to move, it hurts to lie still, it hurts to reach, it hurts to breathe, and I can’t sleep. Rant over, now get off my lawn.
fatjollyhousewife@reddit
Why has no one mentioned leg cramps yet? Woke up out of a dead sleep with a hamstring twanging like a piano wire, I was sobbing it hurt so much. Went on for a good half hour, scared the crap out of my husband. Literally, he had to hustle off to the bathroom right quick

Oh, those are the worst. I had one once and I thought I was dying. It crumpled me into a screaming heap.

My cousin (49) recently gave himself a hernia bending over to tie his shoe.
He didn't think it was as funny as I did.

Can’t be tying shoes at 49😳

Anyone else have at least one toenail that needs garden shears to trim?
WaySuspicious216@reddit
I was at a podiatrist appointment and he brought out some serious shears to do my toe nails. Now I know what I want for Xmas.
Durwyn@reddit
I had several, then I got a wild hare and bought these on Amazon. Search for "Toe Nail Clipper for Ingrown or Thick Toenails,Toenails Trimmer and Professional Toenail Nipper for Seniors with Stainless Steel Surper Sharp Blades".
I can not express what a difference they are. The toes (yes multiple) were trimmed faster and cleaner than just struggling with a single one.
You're welcome.
Zapp_Rowsdower_@reddit
Whaaaaaaa….//
Durwyn@reddit
Yeah, I know.
AmongTheWildlife@reddit
That starts happening about the same time the hair starts migrating south. Still can't figure out why my body needs hairy nose and ears, or what it's preparing for...
International-Plan16@reddit
I kept one of my gnarly ones. It’s on the shelf of my home office. What happened to me? Cheers.
TheRenownMrBrown@reddit
I swear. I almost broke my clippers the other day. I watched as the ends of the handles met each other and the nail was just kicking back and saying “Being it on fat boy!” Then I started to wonder which would happen first. Run out of air while reaching for my toes, or killer cramps from Mars in my thumbs. Luckily, it finally gave up. Darn near lost an eye, though.
gofargogo@reddit
Tweezer Man clippers. Best I’ve owned and never met a nail they could clip.
dsmac085@reddit
😄😄😄 I just had a flashback to the early 80's & practicing my pedicure skills on the parentals (in their late 50's) and wondering if all old people had toenails like tortoise shells and when does that start happening. Yeah I could open taped boxes with my big toes nail🙄😁

Reddit____user___@reddit
Oh you can’t ever sneeze laying on your side
You have to be bolt upright, positioned completely symmetrically and rigorously braced for the outcome.
It would also pay to have a neck brace on and a physiotherapist on standby.
NtMagpie@reddit
After blowing my back out sneezing, my chiropractor taught me the art of the "old man sneeze." If standing, bend at the waist, bend knees at about 30 degrees, and firmly seat the hands just above the knees on the thighs for stabilization.
Works a treat! (unless you're laying in bed. Then just curl in a ball and pray for a quick end to your suffering).
Reddit____user___@reddit
😂😂😂👍🏻
And yes I think I’ve more or less adopted what you describe as the old man sneeze.
I must instinctively be prepping for even more advanced decrepitude 😆🤦🏻♂️

Popped a rib....
Tinnitus-1975@reddit

Head-Proof7273@reddit
I'm old now, but when I was a new mom for the first time in 1999, my eldest daughter (now 30) decided she NEEDED a pink plastic glitter wand at a local fair from a vendor. She NEEDED IT. I was the big bad mommy and said no. This child's face turned the brightest red I've ever seen on a human being. She THREW herself down into the dust and mud at the base of a steep hill, wearing a pretty yellow summer dress I made for her. She screamed at the literal top of her lungs. I bent down to pick her up and that's when I heard CARRACK!
Still, I picked her up and strapped her into her stroller with the 5 point harness in the middle of the biggest tantrum I have ever experienced with any of my 4 children. It was like wrestling an octopus on Speed. I finally got her secured and began to push the stroller up a nearly 90 degree incline. I got to the top, sat down on a bench, and couldn't get back up. My whole left leg refused to lift or even move. My husband had to come get our daughter and strap her in her car seat, then carry me to the car. We went to the hospital where they injected morphine into my spine.
And that was the very last day my back felt normal. Of course I refused to have surgery. I was 25 years old. I worked full time teaching. And it was the 1990s. Back surgery that actually worked was decades away from being good.
So I lived 20 years with a bad back, in and out of physical therapy of all kinds during those years. I finally allowed a spine specialist to open me up in 2019. It took him 5 hours to dig arthritis out of my spine. He put a 4 inch titanium plate and 6 screws to stabilize my spine. It didn't work. I can walk and bend, but there are okay days and days when I wish the hand of God would appear and carry me off.
This wasn't the most traumatic medical experience I have had, but it sucked that I was so young when it began.
NtMagpie@reddit
That's MISERABLE. I'm so sorry! My friend blew hers out giving birth 25 years ago and didn't get it fixed until now, either.
Head-Proof7273@reddit
Back pain is mostly invisible to people who aren't experiencing it. The person with back pain HAS to get through the day, no matter the excruciating pain. And now my husband is feeling a little pain from Sciatica. He has no clue.
gcwardii@reddit (OP)
Oh my gosh that’s awful. Back pain is no joke.
Invanabloom@reddit
Literally happens over night doesn’t it… I’m so stiff & it takes me a minute to walk properly ! Eek!
NtMagpie@reddit
When I first get out of bed I shuffle in what my husband calls "penguining." After penguining for about 10 feet I can actually start walking.
Invanabloom@reddit
Yes this describes it perfectly! 😂

It sure is humbling.

I did that. On vacation in Hawaii. Fun. Sounds like a separated rib.
gcwardii@reddit (OP)
It felt better yesterday. It’s much worse today.
Fired4StealinBoxes@reddit
I’m only 36, but this has happened to me during a coughing fit after a bong hit.
Gf is 52 though and she pees herself when she laughs almost every day. Sometimes she even has to wear a “pee pad”(some rolled up toilet paper) if we’re watching a funny movie.
cawfytawk@reddit
Your sternum is cartilage so there's no muscles to pull. Being in that position, the forced contraction of a sneeze likely strained all the little intercostal muscles between your ribs that hold them in place. May not be age related, per se, but sucks nonetheless. I pee a little every time I cough or sneeze.
gcwardii@reddit (OP)
So are those muscles like up the center of the sternum? I have to google more today.
Unlucky_Profit_776@reddit
Massage therapist here. Around the sternum and clavicle are things like pec major/minor and the platysma, the intercostals are between your ribs and the serratus anterior is on the side of those. Everything is annoyingly connected so when you sneeze, you can be pulling a ton of stuff lol. My guess is the platysma which happens to be one of my fav muscles. It's a bunch of thin fibers from your chin down past your clav. You make faces with it. Lol
cawfytawk@reddit
I'm an LMT, too! Lol! If OP has chest discomfort with breathing and supine it's probably not platysma or pecs. It's likely breathing muscles of intercostals and diaphragm but SCM can be affected too from abrupt head flexion. Sneezing is a dangerous business! 😆
Unlucky_Profit_776@reddit
Hahaha, indeed! Omg I'm so dumb I didn't consider breathing being the cause lol. Man, the scm has to be one of most problematic muscles ever
cawfytawk@reddit
People tend to have a forward head position in combo with slouching so it gets a workout! It's one of my favorite muscles but can get tweaked so easily! Nonetheless, coughing and sneezing are intense activities for thoracic muscles and takes forever to heal when injured. I had an unknown condition that caused me to cough constantly and I had the same issues as OP being unable to sleep and chest pain. Lying 45 degrees helped a lot.
Unlucky_Profit_776@reddit
The scm is one of my favs as well. I'm always suggesting posture and sleeping positions to clients about it I'm all about balancing my own. I have a giraffe neck, I need to treat mine well haha
cawfytawk@reddit
When I was in school and we got to treatments for the neck my instructors said "sleeping is a dangerous business" and they were right. I only use tempurpedic curved neck pillows. I have 2 different ones! It's a game changer at our age where turning your head too fast pulls a muscle!
Unlucky_Profit_776@reddit
Serious! We have to take care of our GenX selves :) I put a giant stuffed animal under my knees for my lower back and I sleep w the pillow under my scap and up so it's all even, lol. I didn't even think of temoyrpedic, thanks for the rec
TheRenownMrBrown@reddit
This will sound weird, but try one of those squish mellows pillows. They are made for kids in different character shapes. My little ones got a couple in Kings Island a few years back. They are awesome a supporting your head and neck. Just enough give.
Unlucky_Profit_776@reddit
That doesn't sound weird at all, I love those things. Thank you!

i pulled something in my neck and shoulder turning around to find my ringing phone.
i mean, who the fuck do i think i am turning around quick at my age?
No_Note_976@reddit
Might be a costal cartilage injury. That happened to my husband after a big cough. Ice and Advil was about all he could do. Aging is fun! Hope you feel better soon.
No_Farm_3562@reddit
I did this and it really was horrible
TheRenownMrBrown@reddit
Yep. Pulled mine at the Y doing lat pull downs. Just felt a little snap like a thread popping inside me. Didn’t think anything of it. But boy howdy when I woke up the next morning. I couldn’t hardly breathe. Took close to three weeks to get well enough to work out again. Very lightly. And I was only in my early forties. I’m so scared of 50.
No_Farm_3562@reddit
I swear I both felt and heard a loud pop/crack...thought for sure i broke a rib. I really hope it doesn't happen again 😕
gcwardii@reddit (OP)
I’ve been doing Advil. How long did it take for your husband to heal?
No_Note_976@reddit
Like 6 weeks, although he felt a lot better after 2. We thought he cracked a rib at first.

GotchUrarse@reddit
Not exactly the same, but for me (53), it's a gout flare up. I've had a couple in my foot the last 2-3 years. One hurt so bad I couldn't tolerate a sheet laying on it. I hope it happens to no one here, it's terrible.
TheRenownMrBrown@reddit
You speak the truth. Of course, I earned mine. Went to a Brazilian steakhouse. Ate way too much meat. Then it started to kick in. Thought I had broken my big toe. Whatever meds they gave me, they were golden. In three days I was nearly healed.

I travel a lot for work. Last year I slipped getting out of the shower and broke a couple ribs on the tub edge. It was not fun. I went to work after.
I went to Urgent Care after a 5 hour drive home. I was feeling numb in my extremities. Turns out I was hyperventilating the whole time because I couldn't breathe deeply.
I sneezed exactly 13 times over 4 weeks. You count that shit when you have broken ribs.

Three years ago, I was working out and felt something pull and jump in my chest. Took myself to the ER because I thought it might’ve been a mild heart attack (former 26 year smoker and dad had one two decades ago; wound up dying from a second one last year).
Turned out it wasn’t a heart attack. I had pulled hard some muscle in my chest.
gcwardii@reddit (OP)
My husband woke up with the same pain a few years ago and I took him to the ER. Same diagnosis. So when I told him what I’d done, he said, “at least you know what caused it. Saved us a trip.”

I did this once. I pulled a muscle in my rib cage. Felt like someone ran me through with a hot poker.
Also, currently recovering from a lumbar laminectomy. I’d take that sneeze pain over this hands down. What you got going on sucks, I’m sure. Just wanted to let you know it can get much worse. Stretch, exercise, drink plenty of water. Etc…
Strict_Weather9063@reddit
Dude weak sauce I was sneezing worse than that when I was in my 20’s. Sneeze pop every thing from the neck down, people would ask if I was okay. Most of the time I was, sometimes it would take me a couple minutes to recover. Now it is arthritis of the spine, the anti inflammatory medication they gave me for that is godly. I’ve sneezed a couple times since the arthritis but I’m dreading the old back breaker as I call them where everything goes pop.
cawfytawk@reddit
Try sleeping at a 45 degree angle. It puts less pressure and weight in your chest. Wrapping your chest in a breathable bandage can also help. You've basically bruised your ribs.
